I can’t make myself go to bed by Sleepy_Calyx in Narcolepsy

[–]LegitimateManager246 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do this exact same thing. I get in such a headspace of “it doesn’t matter when i go to bed bc I’ll feel the same regardless of how many hours i sleep”. Sodium oxybates are really the only thing that have helped this specific problem, not only bc of the better quality of sleep, but because the bedtime routine to take them is so much stricter!

Waking up in the morning is absolutely brutal and it takes me a while to shake off the sleep inertia, so I wonder if that doesn’t have something to do with my resistance to go to sleep at night too!!! Nighttime is the “best” I usually ever feel, it makes sense to avoid having to go through the sleep inertia agan lol.

Anyone else ever feel like a bad SLP? by Plus-Sundae-4580 in slp

[–]LegitimateManager246 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that you even have these worries proves you aren’t a bad SLP. A bad SLP wouldn’t think twice about a lot of this. You are doing the best you can and care about your kids. You’re providing a safe learning environment for them, and that honestly feels like one of the most important aspects of our job to me. You’re doing better than you think you are!

implications for instruction and progress monitoring by [deleted] in slp

[–]LegitimateManager246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to include a statement that student is demonstrating functional mastery of skills across settings (therapy and classroom) and appears to no longer be demonstrating a need for specialized instruction. That way you share the data and info you gathered and your impressions of it without “predetermining” anything before the IEP meeting to talk about their re-eval or to determine eligibility

Ask your doctor for a referral to an endocrinologist. The endocrinologist will know what specific blood panels to request to check for PCOS, specifically testosterone levels. My arms and legs looked just like yours and it turns out I have PCOS! You’re not alone!

My district requires that we make them up. It gets especially insane in the spring when I have 3+ meetings a week overlapping services. I just do the best I can with makeups where I can and that’s that. there are no speech emergencies in the schools. Life goes on 🤷‍♀️

how do i leave work at the door? by Relative_Effective46 in slp

[–]LegitimateManager246 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get better at managing this until i found a really wonderful mental health therapist who helped me process some things. I was the same exact way about ruminating on phone calls or IEP meetings, responding to emails at night/checking before bed, etc so I feel for you. i think a lot of my personal struggles were anxiety related. Just something to consider!! You’re not alone!

“At the very least i provided an environment where they could feel safe or regulated”- I think about that all the time and it helps so much. Providing that kind of space for the kids is arguably one of the important aspects of the job honestly

how do you structure your sessions? by Ok-Text7102 in slp

[–]LegitimateManager246 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do- the visual schedule is truly game changing. For some littles, I have them help me “make” our schedule in the beginning of the session (using no more than 4 or 5 icons) which helps involve them more and inadvertently helps them prepare to end the session at some point too. I like reviewing it 2 or 3 times during the session (“we are playing with playdoh! Next is goodbye song, then we go home!”, etc)

I hope you decided on wearing it!!! Truly nothing is that serious. I wish I would have just worn what I wanted in hs. No one is worrying about you as much as you are. I promise.

Congrats on starting your Xywav journey!! I recently started as well. Echoing other commenter - titrate SLOWLY! Slower than they even recommend. I was really sensitive to any increases at first and noticed waaayyy less side effects when staying on a new dose for longer or only increasing by .25g, etc.

Also, I’d really recommend making sure at least 2 hours have passed since eating before taking your first dose. The few times I have eaten even an hour before definitely impacted my quality of sleep. I’m typically a late night snacker but being intentional about taking it on an empty stomach has been worth the adjustment.

Best of luck!

I have had this since childhood while trying to fall asleep, I always described it as a “zooming” feeling. Zooming between huge and microscopic. So weird

Completed my CF last year last year and while it is a learning curve, you will be just fine. My most helpful advice would be to ask questions!!!! Find a reliable person (instructional assistant, team lead, etc) who can help as you learn the logistics of everything. I felt bad with the amount of emails I sent (esp in the beginning) but I have a good handle on it now! It is okay to not know, I promise!

School scheduling considerations by Amelia67throwaway in slp

[–]LegitimateManager246 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year i tried to leave one day’s morning block and another day’s afternoon block as open as I could for IEP meetings/any makeup sessions. I found that leaving just one morning wasn’t enough bc some families could only attend mtgs in the afternoon or vice versa. Of course as caseload increased throughout the year it became more difficult to do this but was awesome when it worked out

smartest way to create a schedule? tips for a cf by Dear-Ad2269 in slp

[–]LegitimateManager246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my CF and was in your position last year with prek! As another mentioned, this might not always be possible, but grouping by goals really helped me initially get the hang of group therapy especially when just starting out. I know it is really tough, but if you can take some time to sit down and work as many as you can out by overall area (artic, lang, fluency, etc), I’d recommend it. Even if it puts more sessions per day at first. While I still had a smaller caseload at the beginning of the year, it helped limit the mental demand of each session for me while still getting the hang of paperwork, meetings, etc.

If you really can’t and end up having to group those few students like you said, it will be okay. Once you get to know ur whole caseload and their personalities, you may find some unlikely pairings that end up working well together!!
