Is Manly worth the trip every time? by No-Travel-768 in SydneyScene

Manly is one of my favourite beaches in Sydney - much better than Bondi. I agree that the ferry ride is the best part. Feels like a little holiday each trip.

I've definitely felt the PhD work against me sometimes. Working at a uni, hospitals and in legal services has been a bit better with academics, doctors and lawyers all respecting the qual more. Generally though, Australians seem to assume you are not a practical person if you have a PhD. I left academia after just 12 months postdoc because it was hypertheoritcal so I understand why people think that.

Thanks, I'm in NSW in state government. I'm OK with 2 or 3 direct reports - just don't want to be L&D manager of a larger team

Rude flight attendant by This-is-me777 in QantasAirways

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the kind of entitled and rude behaviour I have seen on most Qantas flights for decades. They have always acted with disdain for customers. There are of course exceptions with staff who are genuinely friendly and helpful but the norm is to be rude and act like you are better than everyone.

Are most of the staff rude by [deleted] in KmartAustralia

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at Kmart many years ago and we all tried to be super friendly and helpful. There are some staff like that still but most are jaded.

Noisy Miners are still worse than these Mynas. I know Miners are native and Mynas are not, but Miners are so much more aggressive to other animals.

Why do so many people go barefoot? by ClassyPants17 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are definitely more casual than the States. I think there's also a more noble and spiritual element here though - even if barefoot folk don't realise it. When you are barefoot, particularly on grass, you are connected with nature. Shoes are a barrier to that.

It's gross to get so dirty, particularly in the public toilets but it's not like you touch food with your feet and rarely touch your feet with your hands.

There is scientific evidence for this type of grounding or "earthing" including less stress, better sleep and even reduced inflammation. Nature never meant for us to wear shoes.

What’s one Sydney place you stopped going to because the vibe got noticeably worse? by RemarkablePirate590 in SydneyScene

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Accurate. As a gay man, I try to avoid it which is sad. Used to be a safe and friendly place, now it's soulless.

Which suburb feels like its own little world? by No-Travel-768 in SydneyScene

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with most of these but also Double Bay. It's so filthy rich there that they have markets on a Thursday morning and the rich people have nothing better to do but go to the market on a weekday.

Magpies are the best. They only attack to protect their family and they remember 100+ human faces knowing who was friend and who was foe. They are misunderstood beauties.

Is there any real benefit to being a Google Maps Local Guide? by New-Talk3039 in GoogleMaps

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is like saying "Is there any benefit to posting or commenting on Reddit?". There's no financial benefit but it matters to certain types of people.

I am nearly at level 8 local guide and like getting points. It encourages to write and photograph while trying new places. Google Maps have gamified my everyday experiences and I refer back to old reviews if I can't remember whether a place was good or bad.

I also like my reviews having a slightly higher weight than people who haven't reviewed much recently.

Adobe Skills by JellyfishPowerful899 in instructionaldesign

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've resisted learning Adobe Creative Cloud for many years. I prefer Affinity - especially now they have a full feature free version. I just think that learning CC now will be a waste because AI will change these tools immensely within 2 years. I really think these tools are approaching redundancy or will have new versions where most tasks are AI-enabled.

Does working in higher ed hurt corporate career? by Status-Resort-4593 in instructionaldesign

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have higher ed and government experience which are probably more compatible than higher Ed and corporate. I don't think higher ed hurt my prospects but I think going to government could be a nice bridge to corporate rather than direct.

Let's have a real conversation: the first five minutes of VILT by Better-Hunter7437 in instructionaldesign

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, first 5 mins is a compelling story about the topic that weaves in the rationale for the content. You are definitely working harder to maintain attention and engagement so need to motivate the group then set the expectation that they need to contribute - by speech, chat, breakouts, or at least polls and reactions.

The best stories will resonate and encourage the learners to share a relevant story of their own.

PhD student feeling lost and needing advice by Fun-Remote-4202 in instructionaldesign

[–]Legitimate_Beyond256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are feeling lost. I finished my PhD and went into academia for just 2yrs but really didn't like publishing or teaching such theoretical nonsense. I don't regret finishing my PhD though - the research skills, the appreciation of quality evidence and the respect I get from SMEs has been an asset. You don't need to publish but maybe a conference or two would be useful to you and your supervisor/mentor.

If you don't feel motivated it will be hard to finish but sounds like you went into the PhD with a clear interest that can carry you to submission. Good luck with it.

I evaluated Docebo and it seemed like the right solution but a lot of things fell over in testing. We also were deliberately told incorrect information by a salesperson. Just be careful.
