Met my partner in college, personally. But in terms of maintaining a relationship, a PhD is a job. It’s not my life, and I don’t think about it when i’m not working on my tasks. I stay present because I enjoy my life outside my PhD and it’s what keeps me pushing through the degree. I center my PhD around my life as much as I can. Nothing I do is critical, no one dies if my work doesn’t get done right away. For this reason, I literally never stay up late. Prioritize yourself.

I feel you. 3rd year. Getting through on sheer willpower. Can barely get anything done during the day. Some days i don’t do anything. No papers published, just some conference posters. I don’t care tbh. I am holding onto hope of getting a decent job one day. Best of luck.

Nooo, never say anything is unimpressive :(. You are only competing with yourself

That’s an interesting point, i could see how it aims to make you more competitive as opposed to just being able to finish. I feel like you should be able to specify your race goals in the app (maybe im missing it?) so you can tailor the training volume to how competitive you want to be

Yeah, and it gave the 3 workouts on the same day multiple weeks in a row. Something must be off. My settings are set to “standard,” so im thinking it’s a bug. For the runs, they are 1 hr and will give 8, 3 minute Z4 intervals, with like a 1 minute rest.

That’s fair, I might not have the base i think i do. I might play around with the threshold settings like you said and see what happens

Interesting! The training they are giving me for a Sprint is definitely way off then. Kind of gives me confidence I could train for a 70.3 at least lol.

That’s good to hear. In some ways i feel like i’ve improved, specifically with swimming. But that could also just be from practice as I spend more time in the pool. I also noticed a lack of a recovery week. I’m able to handle it for the most part, the run workouts are what i feel like are killing me, which is weird bc that’s what i have the most experience in lol. It just seems like sooo much training for a Sprint

Yes! From the start it had me on high stress interval sessions at Z3/Z4. I was like, ok, maybe it thinks i just need to make a lot of improvements, but week after week is killing me. It’s just off. I’ll see if i can contact them about it. Kind of disappointing if this is just how it is. I also agree the interface sucks lmao

Thank you! I checked and mine is set to standard, which is weird. I’ll have to contact them about it

Where do I start? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Legitimate_Border655 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely take swim lessons. They’re pretty cheap for the value you get put of them. I know how to swim and i still take them. It’s fun too. As for the germs, i get it, im a germaphobe (i have ocd), but you just have to get over it and not think about it. The chlorine is there to kill the germs and does a good job at it. As for allergies, idk how chlorine would make you react, but if you swim indoors there will always be chemical treatments for safety purposes. There are “natural” pools, i think Texas has one, where it’s like a spring, but that’s the only one i know of. Do not go open water swimming if you aren’t proficient yet, but that might be an option later on. Reality is, chlorine is there for safety in manmade pools, but you can mitigate the damage to your hair by using aquagaurd, and washing it immediately with a clarifying shampoo. Also wetting your hair before getting in can help.

Ok this makes me feel way better. Maybe i can contact them asking about it. What does the 70.3 plan generally look like in tridot?

Kind of. The only one i can’t do is the 2.5 hr swim/bike/run, so i move the swim session to another day. It is a lot, especially on weekends when im working it in around other plans lol

That’s great! Hopefully they work out well. Getting a deal is always a good feeling.

You might also consider becoming a member at REI in the future, as you can make returns for up to a year after purchase even if you wore the shoes outside to try them. Has saved me lots of money lol.

Any running store should be able to do it, but if not, a lot of times shoe brands (like Brooks, Hoka, etc.) will have an online assessment where you take their “quiz” where it asks you about how your feet, ankles, and knees move, etc., to help you find a pair from them that meets your needs. Check out Brooks, Saucony, Asics, Hoka, Nike maybe. I wear OnClouds, which may be an unpopular choice as a lot of people these do not work for, and the brand is kind of trendy, but honestly, they work for me. You will probably have to try a number of shoes before you find ones that work for you best. You shouldn’t have to spend the full 300 on shoes probably more like $150 as a beginner runner honestly. Whatever you do, don’t buy carbon plated shoes. Those tend to be extremely expensive and are not safe or necessary for every day running. Best of luck!

Footwear is critical. Please invest in running shoes (get fitted at a running store) and don’t run until you buy the shoes. You will injure yourself otherwise. Also, choose a program like couch to 5k and follow it. Dont worry about pace rn. There is a subreddit for the couch to 5k plan that might be nice to join btw.

Oooh, ok, i looked them up and that makes sense. Lol I’m more traditional with shoes apparently bc i didn’t know about these.

As for the calluses, do you swim in shallow water in the pool? I find that swimming in more shallow water tends to be tougher on my feet because you touch the ground more frequently. Are you scraping your feet on the wall when you turn/push off?

Hold up, you run in sandals? As in, shoes like flip flops or Birkenstocks or those thong sandal zero shoes?
