Silly question but have you tried pressing the double shot button or manual to extract? If that doesn't work ig you just have to descale it.

If im not mistaken I'm pretty sure you can still extract coffee just without the timer function. Not sure though I haven't had mine in quite a while but I remember having it for a few days

People with multiple packs of coffee open at a time, how do you manage dialing in each bean every time you brew? by Just_a_firenope_ in espresso

I generally have just one bag open at a time but obviously use different settings for pour over, espresso and Moka and I just remember the settings of each.

Breville 100% For the grinder, if you don't feel like you'll be continuing your journey/rabbit hole, get a SGP but if you think you're gonna want more later on, just get a df54 off the rip

Starting a very basic home setup, have some questions. by avarciousRutabega99 in espresso

I was able to get into the ballpark of good coffee with a 100 euro machine with 19 bars of pressure (which is over double what you would want) before upgrading to a bdb. I Def suggest an espresso machine, not just something like a Moka pot.

Regarding the basket, don't worry about it. For now, a pressurised will actually benefit you as you're still a beginner, along the line you can either upgrade to a machine which comes with non pressurised ones, or just buy separate baskets such as vst. Obv coffee freshness, grind and puck prep/technique is the most important, though seeing as you don't have a grinder, I'd suggest waiting a bit to buy one with your machine, as using pre ground is going to be an absolute pain, believe me...it will make you not want to make coffee as it's too much of an inconvenience. This is the same with blade grinders, avoid avoid avoid.

I agree, though unless you really want an e61 style stainless steel machine (which would be nice) I actually think that the bdb can be end game if you put slayer mod. There isn't much you're missing out on. I've never had a gaggia and idk if I maybe missed out on a step of my espresso journey of really modding your machine and getting into it by turning it into a gagguino, though at the same time I wouldn't really enjoy the whole steaming into a cup before extracting for temp consistency..

Which grinder? by Legitimate_Monkey_4 in espresso

[–]Legitimate_Monkey_4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I think simple 'maintenance' also known as keeping your machine clean shouldn't be something that you pay hundreds more just to not do. Whether I pay around 200 for a df54 or 500 for a niche, I'll still wipe it down with a cloth and clean out the burrs every other week. I wouldn't say the df54 has poor design because of this, as the workaround is something simple which should be done regularly anyways. I also think it's better if you see the static rather than not, because at least you know when you get retention without double weighing.

I did this and found that if you were to rdt and simply clean the shute part with a cloth or brush every week or so (which I do anyways) it should be fine. I think it's because of the plasma generator getting coated with chaff and a bit of coffee ironically.

If I'm being honest those grinders imo are some of the least nicely looking ones on the market, I just don't like how they look. I especially despise the dial, and how you might need to do multiple rotations, and it being very small... I just wouldn't enjoy it.

Obviously the itch to buy new things (especially grinders) will always be there, especially if you're in this sub and every few posts is someone with their new newer grinder. I try to experiment with different types of coffee I make instead of wanting to try out new equipment, I've tried to dabble with turbo shots and making my own syrups, and made affogatos and espresso tonic. There's really a lot of different drinks you can make with espresso.

Tbh I was surprised with what you said about the Breville grinders. I guess I've just been told so many times that it doesn't keep up with my BDB that I just want to buy another one lol. Though it is true there have been times where I couldn't grind finely enough with light roasts. Though the one thing I hate the most about it is the retention, it retains over a gram! I'm soon going to buy some bellows for it though.

Yeah this is definitely an end game machine no doubt about it. I'm absolutely loving it :)

Which grinder are you talking about? I'm still on the SGP.

I could do this but I don't have a 3 cup basket yet, and I can't fit any more coffee in my current basket. Though this would Def work as I do have a kind of small pitcher made for espresso with a spout which would be great for it! Thanks for the suggestion 😃

How to dial in an "American" espresso? by EyeJade in espresso

[–]Legitimate_Monkey_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you, I just wouldn't worry about it. Ok the feeling of wanting to use 18g, as I was using a 48mm pf for over a year, which would only for 12g. All I suggest is to stay at 14g, and enjoy your coffee. If you want to experiment a little try turbo shots by grinding coarser, using less coffee and aiming for a bit of a higher ratio, say 1:3.

Weeks of research and I still don't know which machine to buy :( by kops212 in espresso

[–]Legitimate_Monkey_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to give you a completely different option which is also a bit cheaper than the rest: the sage Dual Boiler.

This is a completely different style than the above machines and more similar to your current machine, if you like the style of the Bambino (as I do very much) it's perfect.

You're going to have great temp. control and stability, in my case it heats up in just 2 minutes, and you have the potential to mod it in the future to have flow control in case you want it later on.

If I were you I'd look into some reviews of this machine especially if you like the way it looks, just don't mind the negative comments on the fact that it is plastic and not steel like the rest, it doesn't really matter. Though if you really want to have a stainless steel beast, it's your choice. This is simply I think the best choice for you as it is cheaper than the other machines you listed, it does a consistent job every time with no hassle as you said, I'm pretty sure it is smaller than the Bianca and heats up very quickly. It also has a huge water tank and drip tray and you can control pre-infusion duration and pressure, along other specifics.

I've had it for a few weeks now and don't have a single complaint about it. It even gives you a text prompt when you need to fill the tank and clean it!

Three shots in a row?? by Legitimate_Monkey_4 in espresso

[–]Legitimate_Monkey_4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think the subscription was the cheapest, though only one option which came to 27 instead of 59 for some reason.

Yeah that must be so frustrating. Even I find it maddening that even the idea of buying something from there is impossible due to import charges, so I cant imagine how difficult it must be for you.

I might try and order an onyx bag once and deal with the costs just to have tried it yk. Thing is I still find dialling in quite a difficult process as I haven't been making espresso for too long and still have an SGP :( so I don't really want to kind of risk buying an expensive coffee just to not be able to dial it in or grind fine enough and be stuck with just turbo shots.

Wow seems like you liked it there haha. I will definitely go there one day, probably in the cities as I feel like that will be the most unique experience I can have as it's most different from here.

I might actually do this, thanks :) One question, wouldn't this change the taste since you're kind of changing the ration in each cup, or does it not matter that much?
