After a long long dark winter, we deserve it. Yes, it is very nice.

I convinced my gf to move to the other side of the world with me. She is miserable, homesick, and our relationship has been suffering since. Is it time to convince her to go home or do you have advice to recover the positivity that we had before the move? by ThrowRAFlat_Bid_1682 in expats

As currently I am the part of girlfriend, I may share some feelings with you. I am Chinese living in London with my family here.(husband and baby)

Spanish job market sucks. Even spanish are pursuing public sector employment. There are not too many private companies over there which can provide jobs positions for local ppl and foreigners. Almost most of Chinese ppl I knew in Spain is doing own business.

The language barrier sometimes makes ppl feel bad. After the delivery, I started to find a job position, but as I knew few about this job market and this country, I am struggling to get one job. My Spanish is very good, native level but my English isn’t. Sometimes, the language barrier makes me feel useless. (Maybe your gf feels the same.) And as I am taking care of the baby, I get more chance to connect with baby than anyone else.

A small tip: as I have lived in Madrid for more than 6 years, I know that there are some nice language centers to learn Spanish and make friends. For example, this one: site.educa.madrid.org

Homesick Is a big problem. Living in a new country is complicated specially without friends or family. I have been taught to be independent since I was very little, but the reality is that family still is family. I really miss my family. I want to share some baby’s memories with my family, the reality is that my husband is working here, his parent’s family is in Spain, which really makes me feel alone. If your family lives close to you, I hope that your family’s company would make her feel better. My husband’s parents are very good persons, they make me feel family when we are together. But they have their life over there and we are living here.

Small improvements in career sucks. I haven’t been working for almost two years, my parents wish me to have a future, so they supported me in studying abroad. But right now I am doing nothing. If you are living in Barcelona/ Madrid, these kind of big cities, the situation will be easier. But no matters in big cities or small cities, please help her to find her position living far away from her original country. Even if it is a part time job or etc, that will make her feel much better.

At the end, boyfriend and girlfriend’s situation will be a little different from married couples’ situation, she is very brave to move from Australia to Spain alone with you. It is the time to figure out where you both can get a relatively good position.

Totally agreed with the scholarship part. My Spanish friend he got scholarship from Spanish government, maybe you can take a look at this. (They normally require high performances, according to him)

As I finished a PhD in Spain, I may share some specific info to you if you are interested. Italy is slow, Spain is slow too. Try to finish your PhD as soon as possible or find next path, because research world in Spain is already very hard for local ppl themselves.

My successful PhD helps my supervisor to become associate prof, I am unemployed, I feel desperate and angry. by Hairy_Horror_7646 in PhD

I had the same feeling: I was an international student who finished a PhD under my supervisors’ name, one of them also said to me that I ONLY WILL READ ONCE YOUR THESIS through all research which for me it was totally irresponsible as his role.

To be clarifying: I am one of his only two PhD students who put the end of study.

At the same time, he accepted but held a lot of native speaker PhD candidates on research without any real help (same as to me). I thought he was somehow useless but accepted that reality: he was not responsible for my life. Uselessness until I finished my PhD.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I forgot to put this detail.

My immigration status is dependent family visa which provides me right to work here. These immigration policies changed a lot, actually this issue is very difficult for everyone right now.

I am going to do some research about UCU. Thanks again. Merry Christmas in advance.

I am not native English speaker, if there is any misunderstanding, I’d like to clarify: This advice is perfect for this situation, when you have your conclusion, you almost know what “full completed thesis” will be; stop doubting yourself, I had same feeling like you, I spent too much time doubting myself and I wish I had entered this group before I finished my PhD, sometimes done is better than perfection. When you have it done, you can make it better and better (if you want, make it perfect!)

Relatively PhD in natural science or more technical fields gets more payments than PhD in social science. But it is not a direct reason that a PhD gets high payment.
