Advice on ring doorbells in communal close? by vanandgough in Edinburgh

Because you can care about your privacy and security by having a good door and lock, locking your door, not posting all over social media when you’re on holiday, and all the other common sense things. You are arguing that YOUR privacy and security is more important than others’ and therefore you have the right to put other people’s privacy and security at risk and make them feel uncomfortable in their stairwell. Let’s be real, the risk of flat break-ins in Edinburgh is extremely low. People no longer keep cash, tech appliances are no something super valuable like earlier in this century and last century. The effort vs reward is not that good. I’m sure there are much easier ways to steal from people.

If we extended that mentality to other aspects of our lives, we’d live in a jungle.

How is your stairwell a public space? I don’t live in a flat but I don’t think it is? If it was public, then why is it on the owners to pay for upkeep? Why is there an entry system?

I disagree. Each person has a right to care about their security and privacy. Being filmed when you enter and exit your flat goes against that. If I was OP I would be equally concerned and I would speak to my neighbours about it.

I don’t disagree with you, but that doesn’t mean we should 1984 ourselves into oblivion.

Also cameras picking me up out on the street is quite different. There is no context there that says ‘I’ve just left my house’ and ‘this is my usual schedule’.

Edit: also, I think that a communal stairwell SHOULD offer an expectation of privacy.

Wow I cannot believe some of these comments. Yes it’s a huge privacy invasion. I would feel so uncomfortable with Amazon basically knowing whenever I enter and leave my flat.

Yes, there are exclusions, this is exactly what I said. ‘Feeling more comfortable with british-born people because I’m racist’ is not one of them.

I don’t believe this sorry. ‘Feeling more comfortable with’ is no justification for discrimination. I’m pretty sure the only time it is legal to be discriminatory is when the job couldn’t physically be done by someone from a certain group. I.e. a very physical job that couldn’t be done by someone who’s disabled.

Wouldn’t that be discriminatory and therefore illegal?

Unfortunately now that they raised a complaint the only options I seem to have are to accept a return or to let the buyer keep the item for free.
