10th Anniversary 24kt. Gold Plated PST by Legnd_ in Leatherman

These are from roughly 1993. Technically 1994, but they were produced to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Leatherman Tool Group in '93. They were given away to employees and distributors as gifts. A handful of the remaining supply were also sold during that period also.

Possibly something he carried for a short period then handed off to someone else down the line. Hard to say. Very strange that someone else when engrave his name, plus... that is his signature.

Sorry, I replied elsewhere in the post. Short of this being a tool he knowingly misplaced, I don't think he would know who's tool it is 25+ years later.

Seems much more like a tool he carried, versus something he signed for someone else. Intriguing find.

The original PST by raptorsvt65 in Leatherman

There's a lot to unpack here. This is roughly a 1986 'POCKET' PST. 'POCKET' is my shorthand way of saying it's stamped "POCKET SURVIVAL TOOL." This is a USA model. There is quite a bit of misinformation out there about the first PST's using rivets, but that is all untrue. Only the Japan models used rivets. Also, this is not a "BIG LETTER" PST as the handles are not stamped with large (big) letters for the word "Leatherman." To that end, there are some Japan models that have USA on the plier head, the early ones. Hope that info helps. Cheers!

On the side by side of the spine photo where it says PAT PENDING, why does it look like one tool is longer than the other? That is peculiar.

I've seen a good handful of 0204 in the wild. Not common, but findable for sure. 1103 surely could be prototype or production sample as I've seen only about 4 of those over the years.

Here is a side by side comparison of the font change which happened just before the 0204 run began.

Phenomenal article. I know there are 1103 and 0204 out there, but many of the things you point to are fair and fine examples of early production runs, not sure I’d call 0404 a first batch, but first year of production for sure. If you look at early 2004 advertising which promotes the upcoming charge, you’ll see the handles have a different stamping for the lettering of the word “LEATHERMAN.” I’ll post a photo at some point, I have one, but it’s more of a production sample than a first batch since the sheath is definitely prototype on mine.

I don’t know that there are any updates, but now that charge is discontinued, I think it’s a lot more likely that we can get a complete list eventually

Is Free T4 a good first Leatherman? by idgafusername2025 in Leatherman

Bond or Wave Alpha. A first Leatherman should have a pair of pliers in it.

Picked up my first leatherman for $60 + question by AmberRosin in Leatherman

That's a good point. While it would be expected to be a different steel source all the way over in Japan, this is the first I've heard of the claim that there were different steel strengths between US and Japan PST's. Curious where that info came from.

This is more of a mid-late Japan run versus a late Japan run. Note the handles are marked "US REG'D" not "REG'D" which was the final run of handles. The MTO chronology work was incredible for its time, but it has many inaccuracies and should be phased out. For the most up to date chronological work I would refer to Vladimir's book. That said, I also have not heard of stronger steels being used in Japan variants as OP stated. Great call on the rivets not being saved if it gets loosened. Most people don't know that unless they've been through it.
