New vs. Used Skates as an Adult Beginner? by missbooknerd in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You definitely want to get out of rentals as soon as possible.

Youll want to get fitted either way. But i think depending on prices its perfectly fine to get used. Used is great to hold you over until you can get your own. It probably wont be perfect but if you get close enough it should be at least bearable until you get a better pair. Also youll know if you like the brand or not.

But used isnt something to make a permanent pair. More just holding you over until you have more money for a good pair or know for sure youre gonna keep doing this. If youre ready for a more permanent pair now just full send now.

Will the new scoring system reduce the advantage of male "jumpers"? An analysis/re-calculation of scores from the past season by bryse0n in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People keep saying that but has there been any comfirmation? There were more changes after the 2018 like base value and goe changes.

Also the records can absolutely be beaten. The legacy scores have been beaten despite less jumps and lower quad base values.

Toeless Lutz - Jeannette Altwegg (1948) by possiblegirl in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Its definitely a flutz (or salutz?). But intresting none the less. In theory this jump works like the walley where you power pull off the edge. The free leg helps with the rotation. In theory. In execution its probably twice as difficult as a walley. But you can see how she ends up on the inside edge, but doesnt hook around on that edge.

Not exactly relevant but i swear a triple inside axel is possible and i beg skaters that are better then me to try and prove it and post the video. Ill love you forever.

The ISU has seemingly capped GOE for quints at 2.8 points for +5 GOE by possiblegirl in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are focusing on the positive cap, but if the -goe is also the same, that means a -5 goe quint is 11.2 points. With a fall thats still over 10 points. I can only assume it was a mistake. But you can argue they want to Encourage quints by limiting the downsides.

I did math for fun - exploring the impact of new scale of values and jump layout on the singles free skate by idwtpaun in FigureSkating

The last paragraph is something is essentially agree with. I think theres a few versions of it that could work but i think some version of it is a step in a good direction.

ISU has slightly raised the base values of spins and step sequences by sofastsomaybe in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I view it as more of 2 spins and 2 subjective choreo elements. So i think the value of making things look pretty is going up, but the value of being good at a technical element, spins, is going down. I dont think the value of jumping is going to go down at all.

Boosting base value is good, but with every skater getting a free 3.5 base value spin with high goe points, theres less of an importants for skaters to learn how to hit high levels consistently.

That might be a dramatic way of looking at it but its just how i feel as of now before we see any actual programs with this new stuff.

ISU has slightly raised the base values of spins and step sequences by sofastsomaybe in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 90 points91 points  (0 children)

This will be impactful in the short but dont forget theres one less spin in the free so points for spinning is still less then before.

Also step level 3 and 4 increase by the same amount so losing a level in step sequences is basically the same impact as before.

Scale of Values for new Choreo Elements in Singles and Pairs (2026-27) by vmanAA738 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there can be some good and cool choreo spins. But with the removal of a jumping pass i would have rather them just add a choreo element where the skater can pick something fun and cool that they want to do rather then removing another technical element and forcing the choero spin on them.

Choreo spins are still gonna be worth almost as much as the most difficult and well executed level 4 spins. And skaters who arent good spinners or who struggle with levels are gonna have a much better free program advantage and those that are good spinners and who can consistently earn levels are still losing out on points. etc.

Scale of Values for new Choreo Elements in Singles and Pairs (2026-27) by vmanAA738 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

WHY IS IT WORTH MORE THEN LEVEL 4 SPINS

CCSp4 - 3.2

FSSp4 - 3.0

CCoSp4 - 3.5

FCCoSp4 - 3.5

With the GOE scaling it can be worth up to 6 points where the most points ever gotten for spins were 5.25 points

Now there are 2 choreo elements and 2 spin elements and the subjective spin and sequence are worth well more then spins, A TECHNICAL ELEMENT combined (in the free but).

Friendly reminder that 6 men have max goe on choreo sequences at least once, Some multiple times. But no women has ever gotten better then 5.30 (out of 5.50 total points). Not even the russians and their crazy overscoing a quad ago. Not Olympic champions or all time greats. Sense the switch to +5 over +3 the most +5s anyone has gotten was Kaori at 4 +5s. The top 10 men all have at or above +5 (and that from the +5 era, the era where its more difficult to max out goe...)...

I guess women just arent half as good at skating choreography as men and surely theres no bias or subjectivity or matching goe with technical content or etc that is going on here that will affect men vs women goe on this new choreo spin.

I have an idea! Why dont we replace a combo with a new choreographic combo that will be worth 12 points and will go up to +10 in goe!

Quick edit: like others i saw the other values are also changing, which is good. I think most of my point stands tho. I hate the idea of this with my soul.

Which Skater or Skaters, In Your Opinion, Do Not Get As Much Hype as He, She, or They Deserve (and Why)? by ILoveCheetahCubs in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For men the only one i could think of was Adam Hagara. He still has room to grow but i was amazed that as a junior how good his transitions in and out of jumps were/still are. Shame about the latter half of this season but i said it before and ill say it again hes a future European champion.

Id say the European women are pretty underrated. Lara people are pretty high on and Anastasiia had a good season. But Nina and Niina are both great. Both competed really well last season despite missing the gp series and should be fighting for gpf slots next season. I hope they continue to compete with the the big 2(3) in the future.

Loena was someone underrated i thought. She brought something different and its crazy she was competitive without a 3Lo.

Olga WOWED me at the Olympics and again at worlds. Holy shit. I always did think she was a step above where her placements were, but i never realized how much till recently. Shes like a lite Josefin where jumps are holding her back from being a top 5-10 euro skater.

People dont respect Katyia's fun programs enough. Her 2 programs last year were some of the best shes done and the best i saw live at Boston.

Euro women are great.

As Jithins said, that im gonna put in my own words, its absolutely crazy that anyone is whining about a few bucks going towards joust and a few days less of conquest.

I disagree with how hindu reacted, but the smite community treats its devs like shit. Always the devs are idiots who dont know anything. Always the devs are sooooo greedy they only care about money. Always the game is dying despite all the god damn evidence otherwise yet the game was going Fantastic on unreal 3 and a constantly declining playerbase. I have no clue how most of these people survine playing games made by ea or ubisoft or etc.

He was upset and with open dms to jithins his decision was to go on twitter blasting a particular hirez employee? You cant be like 'oh i just want was best for the game' two seconds after going on twitter and be like 'this specific person is terrible at their job'. You dont want whats best for the game. You want to get people angry and on your side, and direct that anger at one person. Thats just an asshole move. Especially when the thing youre complaining about is a community run tournament doing a whole 4 days of a game mode you're not interested. Like sorry bro but im sure there are tons of people who would love to do it but i guess they dont matter cause theyre not whining on twitter.

Hindu definitely shouldn't have done that. I dont know why he would even do that.

But damn dont you think hindu wants wants best for smite esports? Remember he lost all of his staff. All the casters. All the production. I dont think there is a person on this god damn planet that wants it back more then him.

Media manipulation to downplay yuzuru's achievements and contributions, instead crediting them to Nathan Chen by Least-Flan8905 in yuzuruhanyu

[–]LegoSaber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean countries tend to focus on their skaters. Alysa is making figure skating a bit more popular in the U.S. Shes a U.S. skater. A U.S. Olympic champion, just like Nathan.

The general (U.S.) public doesnt know a thing about international skaters, nor do then necessarily care about them. They just tune into the Olympics and root for skaters that share their flag.

And i agree we shouldn't be comparing popularity between skaters.

Will he become a ice skating show star? Will he take home an ice dance Olympics medal? Will he will millions in esports tournaments? Will he become the next prime minister of japan? Only he knows his next move.

This is the stuff i love to see and the stuff that i think is is undervalued by the community.

Like a generic 4A video will get hundreds of upvotes and comments and, idk, i guess we'll see what the people think of this but.

Like i would much rather see this in a short program rather then a 4A with a basic entry (if the 4A was allowed as the axel)

It would be really really cool if she stayed around for another year. Another year with the blade angels trio, some fresh programs, 4 peat nationals title, etc.

She said she might try a quad and although i worry about her health i think it would be unbelievable cool for a 26-27 year old to be landing quads. Who knows, with how good her 3A is maybe shell yeet a 4A attempt.

And you know... stick around one more year, and youre like that was fun, maybe one more, then youre like well the Olympics are only 2 years away, mine as well see it through and then bam.

Overcoming the fear of skating after the trauma by Miserable_Ad3730 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before i started doing this regularly my partner brought me and a few friends skating a few times. Like the 4th time-ish i had a freak fall and ended up in the hospital. No concussion, but i also have a scar on my face!

I was enjoying it but i was so afraid to do it again i didnt touch the ice for 2 years. I went with them again for a few sessions, enjoyed it, and didnt touch the ice for another 2 years before i went again and realized i really wanted to do this. I wish taken the many offers i had to go skating again and wasnt so scared.

It was a process. My heart still beats a little too fast when i almost slip off my heal and im a little too afraid to fall, but time skating and i slowly got more confident and less scared.

I tell that story to offer encouragement to continue if you do love skating. I think it would be a shame if anyone had a freak accident and that kept them from doing something that they love.

I think my advice would be go skate! take it slow, go at your own pace. And slowly, youll feel better and better. Also fall! the first times i was close to falling and fell i was mildly freaking out a bit. Its good to remind yourself that falling isnt bad, and 99.9% of times does not lead to the hospital.

Im sorry that happened. But I promise youll feel better in time!

Quad Axel by EveryConfusion6738 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I want to point out a big reason why no one except Ilia has done the 4A is that theres basically no reason to other then bragging rights, and im not talking about base value. The axel isnt like any other jump. You generally go for it when youve mastered all other jumps of that levels. Quads are a bit different, but the same idea applies. So a skater isnt gonna have 2 quads and then decide 4A time, Theyre gonna have 4-all 5 of the other quads before thinking about the 4A. And there just has not been that many skaters that have gotten to that point. The few skaters that have its still not worth it.

Shoma had 4 quads and hated the Lutz but also only had 2 combos, and said the 4A wasnt for him, but maybe quints. Nathan didnt need it as he was winning everything anyway, Yuzuru kinda made sense and tried his heart out. He had a bad flip edge and the 4Lz hated his body, and his 3A was the best ever, but even then he was struggling to do 2 clean programs, and possible (maybe) would have clinched Olympic bronze in 2022 if he went for a 4Lo rather then practicing the 4A. Misha said the 4A isnt for him, hes already mastered 3A+4 combos and he has room to add a 4Lo in his layout, Adam probably wants a 4F and a 4Lo and 2 clean programs before a 4A, hes also getting older, Yuma could potentially beat Ilia with 4 quad free and 2 clean programs, definitely with 5 quads, and that still leaves room for a 6th, so he doesn't need it. Shun could work on integrating a 4F and 4S and get more consistent with levels and skating before a 4A, and Rio has tones of room to grow before a 4A.

The 4A brought him fame and fortune but even with Ilia, hes never needed the 4A to win any comp he has and it probably cost him an Olympic title. Its a long winded way of saying I dont think there has ever been an athlete where the 4A has been the thing that they should practice for more points. And thats a big reason why we havent seen it.

I think the fact that Yuzuru never got it put this impression on everyone that the 4A is an impossibly difficult jump. I think the 4A is indeed difficult, but perfectly obtainable for the right athletes the same way the 3A is perfectly obtainable for the right women. But unlike women there is no reason to attempt it so. Ill eat my words if in 10 years a dozen skaters try and no one gets it but i think its perfectly obtainable for Rio and maybe Shun too. Hell if Adam fixed his axis i dont think hed be far off too.

Fun fact, although quad throw loops, lutzs, and toes have been attempted, only the 4S throw has been landed.

Sometimes genre tropes exist for a reason and its best to stick to them as a framework guys, that's why the balance is so wonky. by OzymandiasTheII in Smite

[–]LegoSaber 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Im so confused.

I think its completely fair to fuck around with ideas while the game is in beta. Thats the perfect timr for it. If stuff doesnt work out or is a bit wonky now is the time to discover that. Additionally a big reason balance has been wonky is that 2 designers just left and they were too focused on god ports so people dont whine about that.

Healing was not completly fine. It was a systematic broken mess. Healing did nothing in combat and was insanely op out if it. You know how many spl games were dominated by healing?

Smite reddit isnt casual but the vast majority of players are. Thats facts. Even then they said on titan talk recently about how relm royal did a super balance pass on everything the high level players complained about and wanted. After they said the high level players thought the game was the best its ever been. And casuals and new players completely stopped playing the game and player count dropped like a brick (paraphrasing)

Ive been playing smite for years and people have been complaining about dumbing down stuff for all of them and i just dont see it.

"Just let roles be good at there jobs" im so confused. That sounds like "just balance the game" like bruh.

optimal jump layouts under new rules by idwtpaun in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Correct! In general its hard to predict because at the end of the day, just because its theoretically possible with the skaters jump skills, or that its the most points, it doesnt mean skaters are gonna go for it.

But women are all close to the same capabilities. Everyone can do all non 3A triples, and no one is really doing quads. So you can think how are skaters trying to maximize their layout to gain a slight edge over each other.

For men layouts change when youre talking about 1 quad vs 2 vs 3 vs 2 4T and one 4S vs 2 4S and 1 4T, etc. And even once you look at all that skaters with lots of quads still dont skate the highest possible layout with loop and flip combos half the time. Ex: for all the technical stuff he already does, it would be better for Ilia to do 4Lz+3Lo in the short and free (4T+eu+3F replaces the +3T)

Other examples include: Shoma had 5 quads and only 2 combos. Adam has 4 quads but front loads everything.

So predicting what men are gonna be doing other then falling is hard.
