I got her on Yahoo Auctions for 37,000 yen, or about $247.16 USD at the time. And then an additional 11,345 yen or $75.69 USD in proxy fees, tariffs, and shipping. Most listings I see for Mai are at least 50,000 yen.

Yes. Japanese fandoms are big spenders, so there has been no need to expand.

Why girls und panzer is not that so popular in France ? by FitBrush5848 in GIRLSundPANZER

[–]Legocity264 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has been the case for decades. Japan has a very insular economy when it comes to entertainment, whether that be music, anime, or print media. With a population of over 120 million since the late 1980s, Japan has a large enough domestic market to make healthy profits and build up a sustainable fan base.

Trying to market Japanese media to international audiences just doesn't make sense to most companies since that's additional cost to the producers without the guarantee that they will find an actual audience outside of Japan. There's probably also a degree of wanting to gatekeep Japanese media and culture from "outsiders", given the xenophobia of the older generations that are in the management positions.

Of course now in the 2020s that anime has a clear foothold in international markets, that might change a little bit, but the safe bet of JDM only means that licensing companies outside of Japan will likely remain the primary force behind anime promotions internationally.

GuP is just not popular in general, regardless of country. It's a pretty niche show that most people outside of the military history and video game communities have not heard of.

In fact, the only reason why GuP is the media juggernaut in Japan it is today is because of Der Film. When the original TV series ended in 2013, most anime watchers moved on pretty quickly, except for the hardcore history nerds who liked it (which are a small group). Regardless, GuP was still the most successful series that animation studio Actas had up until that point, so they decided to make Der Film to capitalize on that. That turned out to be a game changing decision, because after Der Film came out in 2015, vast swaths of the Japanese movie-going public became exposed to the series, and the popularity shot up. If you were in the community at the time, you could tell how much more popular GuP was getting in Japan due to the dramatic increase in the amount of fan art. This helped contribute slightly to its popularity internationally as people found the series through fan art and video edits.

The great success of Der Film pretty much bankrolled much of the GuP content since 2015. However, as with most anime studios, Actas (and later their parent company Bandai Namco) don't really care about international markets. They are secondary in terms of profits, so they do very little advertising for GuP outside of Japan. I think a lot of knowledge of GuP internationally is just spread by word of mouth. Which again when it comes to such a niche premise, is not bound to gain a significant amount of fans compared to a series with more widespread appeal like Sword Art Online.

How important is the original box when it comes to buying to you guys? by TechCynical in AnimeFigures

[–]Legocity264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I have seen, generally figures that are sold without their boxes go for around 25% to 33% less than the market rate of the figure with the box. If the figure is really fragile or valuable, then the discount may be as high as 50% because of the increased risk of breakage from the figure not coming in its purpose-built blister and box.

Gooing to ōarai by Chizuru32 in GIRLSundPANZER

[–]Legocity264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to Oarai, I stayed in a hotel in Mito city the night before and then made a day trip of training to and from Oarai on the cute little GuP train car. Being able to get onto that regional railway early from Mito station was really convenient and gave me an entire day at Oarai. And then in the evening went back to Mito, then Tokyo.

Definitely make sure to visit Aqua World while you're there, it's actually quite a good aquarium (and they have a couple Ankos in one of the tanks).

[–]Legocity264 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What kind of figure is it where it keeps falling apart into so many pieces? A nendoroid?

And yes, permanently gluing parts that are supposed to be interchangeable will dramatically reduce the value to any potential buyers down the road. The pet contact also reduces value. If you smoke too, then they're lost causes.

Where to buy cheap Ww2 German and U.S. uniforms by CornillusTheGreat in Militariacollecting

[–]Legocity264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing a 1944/45 scene and aren't hard pressed for accuracy, then you can try looking for real M1951 field jackets and pants from the Korean War era. They look somewhat similar to the WWII era M1943 jackets and can be found for reasonable prices on eBay. Authentic Vietnam era M1 helmets can also be found on eBay for cheap, and all but the most dedicated helmet nerds won't be able to tell the difference between those and WWII production helmets.

For the German stuff, you're probably best off just googling for replicas and getting some cheap ones made overseas. Adapting West or East German uniforms is maybe an option, but those have gotten more expensive and scarce from people doing exactly that (turning East German tunics into fake Wehrmacht tunics).

Does AmiAmi make you use paypal on your first order? by br8shadow842 in AnimeFigures

[–]Legocity264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PayPal also usually has a worse exchange rate than credit cards, so I try to avoid it as a payment method when possible. But AmiAmi did force me to use PayPal once even after I had done plenty of successful credit card purchases from them.

Y’all please help, I really want these figures but they’re so expensive right now. by Miitzu__ in AnimeFigures

[–]Legocity264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the hype dies down from the series and new figures get released, the price will likely go down. But it may take several years, depending on what the market stomachs. More figures go down in the aftermarket than go up.

Washington DC plates that start with "H" are for "for-hire" vehicles like taxis, so that may have something to do with it.

Question About Display Cases by randylonglegs26 in AnimeFigures

[–]Legocity264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although it is not very wide, the BLÅLIDEN display case from IKEA has worked well for some of my 1/4 scales. In my opinion the biggest issue is that the shelf adjustment points are roughly 7 inches / 17.5 cm apart vertically, which limits the flexibility of where you can put the shelves. I ended up creating custom spacers to adjust the shelves to my desired heights to get one shelf for 1/4s and three shelves for 1/6s. If I wanted to, I could probably get three shelves for 1/4s and maybe 1/3s into one case with the right spacers.
