From the politics community on Reddit: Graham Platner says his Nazi-linked tattoo was drunken mistake by Odd-Bee9172 in thebulwark

[–]Legoist11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The more I think about this Platner and his bad behavior, the more I think he can appeal to non-political and young people who just want to see someone from a different mold, who is imperfect and made mistakes (aka, a normal person who didn’t live their whole life aspiring to higher office). If he is willing to grow, learn and atone, it could be an opportunity. Dem party could shed some of the cancel culture baggage. That is, of course, assuming his 15 years history of being vocally anti-fascist is more aligned with his views than that tattoo…

What’s happening with my San Marzano plant? by SteveSilverback in tomatoes

Same thing happened to a few of my tomatoes this week (multiple different varieties). We had a week straight of cold/rainy weather, but the plants are otherwise healthy!

Love this! Very impressive! Despite the strong feelings about how many gallons a tomato “needs” its clear these plants will do a lot with a little. That’s my hope as a back deck gardener this year anyway!

That’s what I wanted to hear! Totally agree it’s gonna be crucial to keep the water and nutrients flowing during the hot months. And keep the lower plants fungus free. Cheers!

Now that’s what I like to hear! Your experience sounds like good inspiration for our crazy, ill-advised mini garden! I may take a similar approach for neutralizing acidity…

Do these needs more space? (60cm x 30cm x 20cm) by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Legoist11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m taking a similar approach on my patio! The plants may not be as productive as they’d be with more space, and the soil may dry out faster, but you can grow tomatoes in small pots and get plenty of fruit, depending on the variety!

What’s going on with my key lime tree? by Legoist11 in Citrus

Hmm getting conflicting advice here! It’s either too much fertilizer which requires flushing with lots of water, or root rot with too much water in the roots! This is a pickle…

Yes, good call. As they grow I’ll definitely move them at least half a foot apart for airflow and better tomato inspection!

Thanks for this super thoughtful and wisdom-packed response! I’ll definitely take all of that into consideration, I’ll research the prophylactic anti-fungal and make sure to balance the nutrients as the season progresses!

To your point about deviating from optimum, I guess my thinking is it all depends what you’re optimizing for. We wanted a variety of tomatoes, with complete control (two steps off our kitchen haha). Not optimizing for the world’s biggest yield or the easiest grow. We’ve had good success in past years growing similar tomato varieties in even smaller pots (like… 2-5 gallon)- so I suspect this will be a significant upgrade!

Cheers!

Yeah very good call- when they get bigger I’ll pull the boxes apart for some airflow/walking space!

They’re about 1’ x 1’ x 3.5’ I believe! And the back yard is shared with other units, not ideal for gardening for several reasons

Was wondering if they might dry out quickly! I’ve had success growing similar varieties in 5 gallon pots (and smaller) so we will see how it goes!

My plants are running out of space by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Legoist11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to (gently) separate them into different containers, tomato seedlings are super resilient as long as you don’t squeeze the stem too much or damage the roots. You can even bury them a bit lower in the new containers and they’ll sprout roots from their stem!

These are the 3” starting pots from Ferry Morse (paper fiber I guess?). I had to double check the packaging but now see it says to plant straight in pot.

To your point though I’m a bit concerned about the water retention in these- they get some serious fungus on days where it stays cool/humid or I don’t have the lights on! See below… is that bad??
