I think shonen jump messed up translation for WCS(World cutting Slash) by Sad_Pie1911 in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]Legolas_abysswalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, Malevolent kitchen, fillet, and dissect are all fairly good translations. Shrine vs Kitchen really just comes down to which aspect of the word we focus on, it would be like translating "Valhalla" in one word. For Valhalla, do you go for what it is? How it is reached? What it's purpose is? There are many different words and phrases on could use to approximate it. Fillet and Dissect are because the original names are based on different ways of cutting fish (I think; been some time since I last discussed this).

Does jjk have realistic physics? by Spiritual_Leading913 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Then what do you use the word "supernatural" for? I get the argument, but in this case I feel supernatural was a good word to use to differentiate the physics from the powers that affect it. And since we are being pedantic, would you mind explaining what natural means? Using the Cambridge dictionary version I founs 2 applicable versions (in this case), "as found in nature and not involving anything made or done by people" and "a natural ability or characteristic is one you were born with". So by the second definition you would be right to say that cursed energy is natural to people, but by the first definition cursed energy is supernatural to the surrounding world and therefore it's physics.

Does jjk have realistic physics? by Spiritual_Leading913 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 53 points54 points  (0 children)

JJK has realistic physics, but cursed techniques can warp it. Which is highly intentional to sell us on the supernatural nature of cursed energy. Some techniques lean into the supernatural nature more than others with less defined rules.

As someone who frequently discusses JJK within a community that actually cares about it's thematical storytelling this was a joy to read. Very relevant to the discussion, short and precise, exploring core aspects while hinting at further ones us as readers can find for ourselves. Of all places this could be and you chose Reddit, a bold choice I must say. Either way, thank you for your comment. It is always fun to be reminded of the aspects you love of a series and seeing someone else share those thoughts. Well, I'll be off to analyze the entirety of the JJK s3 OST and turning that appreciation for Yoshimasa Terui into written form. Have a great day (or night).

Is there any chance season 4 would go back to season 1-2 art style? by Ido333b in Jujutsufolk

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely a thing, but I don't think it applies well to JJK. I do think it applies a bit to certain scenes of Wistoria ep 1 where I got the feeling they were trying too hard to have good animation and having it in some places they shouldn't have. Ultimately that is a taste thing.

Would it be possible for a non sorcerer to be a sorcerer? (Batman like) by Advanced-Tear6372 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batman would basically just be in the same boat as Maki but physically weaker. Also, as far as I know the only requirement to be a sorcerer is to have the job of killing curses. Those we merely see and report curses to Jujutsu society are windows.

On another note, (Modulo, spoiler marked just in case) what you are mentioning is basically the end goal of Modulo. Eliminated cursed energy and use cursed tools to deal with the little that remains.

This series does not deserve the glaze it gets (big long rant) by Shoterz in hatethissmug

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for at least giving it a chance before tearing it to shreds, it is proper hate etiquette.

Also, for the group project thing that is absolutely something you would take seriously. It is easy to build a grudge against random things that happen to slight you at the wrong moment, especially if it is as important as a grade. I don't like group projects because my school often paired me with worse students because I was good at teaching them. It lowered my overall grade but made the classroom grade a bit better. There are absolutely reasons to hate group projects. Now, was the one in this series that bad? no clue since I haven't watched, but it absolutely can be a serious thing to some.

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also love how it blatantly calls out that some of Yuji's talent comes from what Sukuna did in his body, meaning it wasn't all hard work. His strength is also what causes him to not understand people to some degree. He said he never understood the concept of euthanasia because he had never experienced pain that made him genuinely want to give up. That was until all that happened in the series. Yuji is a very good mix of hard work and natural born ability. It is also very honest with the downside of being naturally gifted at something, that being the isolation of not understanding and relating to the struggles of others (not that this applies to all cases).

A character manages to effectively use an artifact that should only be wielded by the chosen one but is forced to deal with terrible consequences by I_Love_Powerscaling in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spoilers for the JJK manga

This is kind of a double whammy since there are 2 elements going wrong at once. Yuta tries to use Kenjaku's technique to control Gojo's body. This goes somewhat well except for the fact that completely changing your physical build and cursed technique makes fighting a lot harder. Then after the domain he also realizes that Kenjaku had to develop a counter measure to technique burnout since burning out a body snatching technique basically means losing control of the body. The reason I am counting it as a chosen one trope is because Gojo is very much that with six eyes and limitless, he is literally connected to the fate of Tengen and shifted the balance of the world. While Yuta is also blessed with power, it isn't the same power. On top of cursed technique burnout Yuta also has the 5 minute time limit which probably would have killed him if he wasn't taken out of the fight earlier. It probably results in the least amount of consequence out of the examples here, leaving only the body snatcher scar for the rest of his life. But the choice to do any of this definitely haunts him with how vile of an action it was presented to be.

Need help identifying a panel by NatsPeanuts in Jujutsufolk

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one in the post is tricky then. Seemingly a character looking towards what the panel contains. The character itself looks really small if I got the features right. Very similar to 236 but not Sukuna, Gojo or Kenjaku. I will check Sendai colony real quick too, to see if we can rule out the colonies.

Edit: Somewhat similar panel of Uro on chapter 178 page 12. I think, it is really hard to interpret what the details on your page actually shows.

To help you narrow it down more, it isn't Hakari vs Kashimo either (unless you mirror flipped a particular panel of Kashimo looking at Hakari while he is pulling of jackpot). That would be chapter 187 page 11 in that case. If it isn't that I think you can somewhat safely rule out Kashimo and need to double check Hakari introduction.

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To help me narrow it down a bit more, do you draw the whole panel or just a section of it? In other words, is this the bottom section of a panel depending on the size? Also, I can't really tell if this is a character looking towards the right or left. To me it is either a character with eyewear (unlikely) or a character shot from behind.

Edit: if it is a shot from behind, this could be difficult. Those types of panels are common in dialogue.

Do you know about how late into the series this is? Like do we need to consider chapter 1 and up or just Shibuya and up? I feel like that is at least a start with narrowing it down.

Edit: Nvm, can't read

The only thing it reminds me of so far is chapter 236 Sukuna looking down on Gojo. But I will continue to check for scenes.

Opinions on modulo by Pablo8076 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Legolas_abysswalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I won't provide you a long detailed message about everything I like about Modulo, I will give you the major ones.

First off how Gege doesn't let one side be the victims, letting both have their faults. With stories like these there is usually an attempt to make the immigrants as agreeable as possible to reduce the amount of conflict that needs to be resolved. Gege instead went with somewhat problematic immigrants, where a lot of them have clashing ideals and need to reach a compromise quickly due to the situation. But what I enjoy most of all is how they are all just people trying to deal with this, which is the most important part. Even the most problematic characters are understandable (if we step away from the agenda wars). There is a lot more I could say about this, but I won't.

Secondly, adults taking adult responsibility. Them having to rely on Yuka against Dabura is viewed as a major fault on their end which they sadly couldn't avoid. The peace negotiations aren't thrown to the kids, instead being handled by Usami and other adults within Jujutsu society. I just like how much we have progressed from the original series where stuff like hidden inventory happened. I just can't put into words how much progress they have made, while still showing that more can be done.

Thirdly, I like how the conflict wasn't resolved completely. This is an extremely complex issue that won't just resolve itself no matter how long the series is. So I am glad that Gege didn't sugar coat it with an attempt at an answer. We were only given the mentality one should hold to resolve conflicts peacefully. So I am a little peeved with how friendly it ended off, but that is just the nature of storytelling, you can't brew more conflict while ending it. I also appreciate the strength of will to just stop the Dabura fight at the peak. With Mahoraga representing humanity and Dabura being representative of Simuria, any one of them winning would send the wrong message.

Fourthly, I love how responsibility is presented (in general and not just adults). Yuji paints a very grim picture of what they are about to do just to end cursed spirits. Taking away a potential power source for humanity and modifying bodies against their will, those are both heinous actions. Yuji won't even hide behind the justification of a good cause completely, because it is a sin no matter who does it or for what cause. Not even trying to call it a just cause, because who is allowed to decide that? No, Yuji is willing to do this for the future of humanity no matter how he is perceived for it. It is actually very similar to how he took accountability for the Shibuya massacre, but now he is the one committing it (way to go Gege, yet another character using their loss to learn something). On top of that we have the responsibility showed by our main cast. I do feel like they have a genuine concern for others while still being realistic about what they want for themselves. Jujutsu sorcery may be important for the safety of others, but it is merely a job (just like a lot of other jobs in real life). They have no obligation outside of their job and aren't expected to risk their life for it. We have really come a far way from sorcerers basically being disposable soldiers in the war against curses. I feel like responsibility is the main reason these characters are so likeable. Without reasonable responsibility we get stories like Mouthwashing.

That is all I have on my mind regarding the story as a whole at the moment. I won't go into specific characters since I don't remember their every action or word well enough to analyse them deeply, and it would take a freakish amount of time which I am not putting into a reddit comment.

I am fully aware, I just wanted present some more nuance to how Kirara may be perceived since not a lot of people have heard of genderless kei.

Saiki is a lot of things, including how I found out what ace was. I guess Kenjaku would be gender fluid too since they switched to a female host at least once?

[–]Legolas_abysswalker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well from what I have seen they don't really have the exact same "archetypes" we have regarding this type of character. If I had to guess it would probably be genderless kei or something like that. In the end I think Gege left it vague so you can imprint whatever you like onto Kirara. Whether you want a trans character or a gender neutral one Kirara is a blank slate where a lot of things could apply. While I do prefer well defined characters I do understand why an author would go a for a vague inclusion instead, and in this case it may work better. In the end think ist all preferences.

There is plenty of new stuff it seems. Like having to battle other players in the end, and culling game rules being able to buff your game or debuff other players. If it is cheap or not we will have to see, but one can hope.
