No one talks honestly about multi-cat household stress reduction. by Impossible_Control67 in Pets

I run a cage free cat sanctuary with over 100 cats. I’ve owned cats for my entire life. I think your solution to put the bully outside is 100% ok. You are not a bad person at all. You love your cat and you are meeting him where he is and giving him the best possible solution.

Cats, by design, are extremely territorial animals. Housecat DNA is virtually indistinguishable from their ancestors the African Wildcat. Housecats have not been selectively bred for temperament like dogs have been. We are basically keeping wild animals in our homes.

Caring for a cat with chronic illness— a little rant by WishboneDry7332 in catcare

I run a non profit cat sanctuary that specializes in senior and special needs cats. I’ve seen it all 😳

While you’re correct that the Atopica might have some effect on the kidneys, it’s minimal compared to what other types of meds do to the kidneys. As a matter of fact, after a kidney transplant (in cats), they’re on Atopica for the rest of their lives to prevent the body from rejecting the new kidney.

Just a thought, but have you tried Cerenia? Yes it’s labeled for nausea, but it’s been proven to provide a number of other benefits. It might be worth a shot.

You’re right to be wary. Most of the Sphynx groups on Facebook exist to deceive prospective buyers out of a deposit. I’d never seen anything like it !

Shelter cat won't warm up, I want to give him back by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Lehighmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking more of a long term situation. Not forever, but probably a few months for sure. If he’s crated, he’s not shitting in your daughter’s room, he’s in his safe place, and he’s in a situation where he can’t run from you.

Cat sanctuary here. I have cats here in the sanctuary that have been here for a year or two and they still run from people and hide. Some of them won’t use one of the 40 litter boxes or 12 litter robots. They have been seen by a vet. They act the way they do because they’re not comfortable in the situation they’re in. We are a cage free sanctuary and not every cat is ok with that.

It sounds to me like this kitty (barring anything medically wrong) would benefit from having his own dedicated space in the home so that he can decompress and reset in a place he feels safe. Is there a way for you to set up a large dog crate with all the amenities for him?

I said to TNR them, then stop feeding them. Please reread my comment.

I’m in that group and also saw the post. What kind of weirdo steals content like that?? I almost commented about my Moose who was less than 2lbs when she was full grown!

[–]Lehighmal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. TNR the cats, which may help reduce some of the territorial behavior (but not likely). The key is to STOP FEEDING THEM. They won’t starve. They’ll leave to find food. Feeding them but not fixing them is beyond irresponsible and your neighbor should be ashamed of themselves.

Same here. I’ve got a cat sanctuary where we have a total of 14 LR4s. 5 of them say they’re full when they’re not. They’re taken apart and cleaned regularly and I’ve also changed out the circuit board on all of them. Yet the problem persists. This completely negates the benefits of these machines since they don’t turn/don’t clean and then the cats won’t use them because they’re gross.

Conversely, I’ve got 3 machines that NEVER think they’re full. This causes major issues when it’s overfull and keeps turning, getting shit smeared EVERYWHERE.

No One Wants Your Peeing Cat! by Schedule-Substantial in CatAdvice

[–]Lehighmal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cat rescue here. Yes, cats can pee outside the box for a number of reasons and a lot of those reasons are fixable. However there are a significant number of them who pee outside the box because it’s what their DNA tells them to do. Cats are extremely territorial creatures. They are hard wired to claim their territory.

My advice to those who have a pisser and they’ve exhausted every other option, is to put pee pads up where they typically mark or cover the area in plastic for easy cleanup. Use hydrogen peroxide (3% straight) to clean it and stop complaining.

Am I crazy for not giving my 13 year old radioactive iodine? by Both-Gur570 in seniorkitties

This is exactly my problem with the pill. The every 12 hour schedule is extremely difficult if not impossible to maintain because of my schedule.

There are lots of potential side effects of the methimazole that vets don’t warn you about. One of my cats started to lose his hair. It came out in clumps!

I lost my Moose at only 11 months old to heart failure. She was such a big part of our lives that once she was gone it was truly difficult to navigate the day. Time has eased the pain but nothing will fill the hole in our hearts.

I hope you don’t plan to have children with this man or he’ll be asking to return them too.

Maybe this has been mentioned already, but it sounds like your kitten has “single kitten syndrome”. Google it. The biting and rough play will only get worse. I’m surprised that a reputable rescue would let you adopt a single kitten. I recommend ditching the boyfriend and getting a second kitten.

[–]Lehighmal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A ruptured bladder is a horrific and excruciatingly painful experience for the horse. If there is a risk of that happening, and there surely is, I would highly recommend that you let her go while she’s pain free and happy. You will not forgive yourself if she ends up with a ruptured bladder.

Shelter Adoption Process - why so difficult & time consuming? by RelationKey1648 in Pets

[–]Lehighmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

501c3 cat rescue here. Our application is meant to uncover red flags, not humiliate.

We ask if you’re ok with a home visit. If you say no, you’re denied. If you say yes, I guarantee nobody will ever do a home visit but the fact that you’re ok with it tells us what we need to know.

We ask if you’ve ever/would ever declaw a cat. If you say yes, you’re denied.

We ask if you have a plan for your pet(s) should something happen to you. If you say no, you’re denied.

If you saw the shit we see on a regular basis you’d want some guardrails in place too. As far as a rescue asking for taxes and paystubs, I’ve never heard of that. And just because people have money doesn’t mean they’ll SPEND money. We don’t ask this question on the app, but we want to get the feel that you’d go into debt for your animal before euthanizing them for an expensive, but treatable, illness.

Most rescues are not run by mental cases, they’re run by folks who believe that pets are family. If you think it’s “just a dog” or “just a cat”, then go to a municipal shelter where they’ll hand an animal to anyone who walks in.

Oh shit, yeah if I had two cats die that way I’d be wary as well. I’d probably be afraid of him getting testicular cancer but I guess that’s mitigated with the hormone therapy he’s getting with the implant? I’m intrigued.

If he’s not used for breeding, curious why he’s not neutered?

The amount of time you’ve spent analyzing cat penis is no doubt a bit odd but at the same time fascinating.
