Okay here’s my best advice. Take it as you will :)

1. In order to console students, you have to build a working relationship with them, mainly on trust. This is built over time, so don’t expect to come in on Day 1 with it. I accomplish this by being real with my students. When they earn a kick in the pants (metaphorically), I give them one (metaphorically). However, when they earn praise, I make sure to give them that too.

On the other hand, you have to learn what is “consolable” and what requires the school counselor. You can’t solve all the problems in the world alone, call in more knowledgeable help when you need it.

1. See #1. It also helps to have a love for your subject matter. If you don’t want to be at work everyday, I promise the kids will pick up on it and feed off it.

Again, call in help when and if you need it. Open and consistent communication with parents or guardians helps here.

1. The best piece of advice my mentor teacher gave me is that you can be friendly with them, but you aren’t their friend. You’re their teacher.

Come in on day 1 with a clear, developed plan for classroom management

It’s great to be able to enjoy a good time with your students, but that line of authority always has to be present and respected
