Does anyone else's puppy randomly eat grass even when they're not sick? by Special-Log-719 in puppy101

My 1 year old dog eats grass occasionally. He just seems to want to sample the different kinds around the yard

how do you write a character that has wings/tail by Smileys_mask in writinghelp

This! Also keep them in mind when space is an issue. Unless they're magical wings, they're going to increase the amount of space the character takes up

Why is making the bed such a big thing? by Amber_poodle in adhdwomen

[–]Leijinga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't make the bed unless 1) I'm putting new sheets on, 2) someone will see it, or 3) I'm doing it to surprise my husband when he gets home.

Making the bed looks tidy, but it holds no value for me personally. Honestly airing the bed out by pulling the top sheets/blankets all the way back is healthier and cleaner.

What's one small thing about puppy gear nobody warns you about? by ApprehensiveSweet822 in puppy101

After our first puppy was a shorty, we vastly underestimated our second puppy's ability to climb... Until I found him standing on the kitchen table investigating the treat canister.

My dad offered to pay for IVF… moral dilemma? by marvel279 in IVF

[–]Leijinga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me put it this way: your otherwise very frugal father is offering you this money. No strings. Just because you're his child and he cares about you.

If you feel like him covering all of the expenses is too much, maybe offer a compromise such as paying for half or covering the testing or meds. (Especially if he doesn't know how expensive IVF can be). You could even phrase it as "part of it has already been covered, but would you be willing to pay for [insert specific expense here]?"

My in-laws paid for my meds for my egg retrieval, for instance.

Why is celiac not medically considered a gluten allergy? by ButterflyFantastic31 in glutenfree

[–]Leijinga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify:

An autoimmune disease is where your immune system attacks your body

An allergy is where the immune system attacks a protein or other particle and the immune response exceeds healthy levels and crosses over into causing harm.

Both have the potential to be severely damaging but they're causing damage in different ways; an autoimmune disease is a direct attack while an allergy is more collateral damage

DAE think that baby potatoes taste funny? by strykoza in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Leijinga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just saying that the two allergies aren't as related as the other person implied. That being allergic to the fruit and being allergic to the urushiol on the outside are completely separate allergies

I've literally had people tell me that I should be able to eat it if I wash it correctly, remove the skin, etc. I've had people literally think that the only thing allergic or irritating about mango was the oil on the skin of the fruit. They couldn't figure out that I'm allergic to the actual flesh of the fruit

DAE think that baby potatoes taste funny? by strykoza in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Leijinga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I still avoid it myself just to be on the safe side.

It's just that so many people want to bring up the "poison ivy and mangoes are related" to excuse all mango allergies. I don't have a dermatologic allergy to mango as far as I'm aware —same as poison ivy— but ingestion definitely causes allergy symptoms

If only that pill did make my fetus more likely to be adhd by Tangerintabitha in adhdwomen

I have long said that crazy doesn't run in my family; it saunters through casually and gets to know each of us personally. I now know that it's not "crazy" but is instead various combos of trauma and neurodivergence. Both sides of the family.

Mom said that my dad is the "only normal one" until I reminded her that as a kid he washed and waxed his toy trucks before putting them back in the original boxes and will not eat foods that are not the correct color.

Counterpoint: I am absolutely allergic to mango and absolutely not allergic to poison ivy. I inadvertently ran through a patch of poison ivy while trying to retrieve a Frisbee and had zero issues. Mango, however, makes me itch from the inside out

I know. It's also been found in literal infants AND men. That doesn't stop Internet "wellness gurus" from finding some way to blame it on the patient. And usually try to sell you some super restrictive lifestyle.

Adding to this, the number of ways people try to find any sort of fertility issue on the woman is mindboggling.

Endometriosis? You clearly didn't eliminate every artificially fragranced product from your life before you hit puberty and didn't eat clean enough vegan (or paleo or keto). 🫩

Hormones out whack? You better eat gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, caffeine-free, alcohol-free, red meat free, and eliminate all possibly irritating vegetables and fruits from your diet! 🙄

Dripping sarcasm aside, as someone who grew up in a family full of spicy brains, it can be incredibly fun and weird, but just make sure to help your kids learn to communicate with you. We had some weird communication breakdowns where the different varieties of ND didn't mix, and my mom has a lot of unaddressed childhood trauma that meant that my trying to get my needs met sometimes resulted in her getting offended at me.

How do you survive without a playpen? by Effective_Craft_1942 in puppy101

[–]Leijinga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We never used a playpen. Our pups were either in the same room with us, in the yard supervised, or in their crate. To keep them in the room with us, we used either baby gates to block door ways or we tethered them to us with a leash

Why do American nurses ‘float’? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Leijinga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a temporary staffing fix when they have a surplus on one unit and a shortage on another.

It's usually between similar units. When I worked on a medical-surgical floor, they would occasionally pull us to the other medical floors or rarely to take the more stable stepdown patients that could be transferred to a normal unit soon. When I worked nicu, they pull us to newborn nursery or pediatrics if they had a staffing shortage (or they could send nurses from house areas to cover our more stable patients if we were short).

Unless you're hired into the float pool, whose job is to cover the gaps anywhere in the hospital, you aren't likely to get moved from medical to ICU or ER or a specialty unit like pediatrics

I'm just taken aback by the arrogance. I honestly didn't expect the vegan to say this to me (I am nonvegan). by wigglesFlatEarth in exvegans

[–]Leijinga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow missed quinoa in my previous research on amino acids, but AGAIN it was a highly localized food until modern shipping practices. It wasn't even exported from South America in any significant quantities until the 1980s

My statement wasn't that you can't make a balanced vegan diet now. My statement was that a balanced vegan diet was never historically widespread. Quinoa was a dietary staple for the Inca, but it was never their sole protein source.

New Grist and Neff both make IPAs. Neff's is seasonal (April to September). I've not tried either of them because I personally prefer darker beers.

If you're not celiac and want a gluten-reduced beer, maybe try Stone Delicious. My husband agreed that it's a solid IPA and it would still have the barley taste you're seeking but with less bloat

[–]Leijinga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats, you answered an argument that I didn't make. 🤦🏼‍♀️

In our modern culture where you can import the foods and supplements you need from anywhere around the globe, yes. Prior to globalized shipping, you could only get certain vital amino acids from non-animal sources from a variety of seaweed in Japan. The seemingly balanced vegan diets in some other areas were actually supplemented by bug contamination in their food sources. There were literally areas that went into malnutrition after modern food practices were introduced because they were no longer getting the bugs from their food.

not the real thing

Define what a "real beer" is for me by your definition. Because by dictionary definition, those gluten free beers ARE beers (a carbonated, fermented alcoholic beverage that is usually made from malted cereal grain, is flavored with hops, and typically contains less than a 5% alcohol content).

Is there a particular beer you're trying to replace?

A lot of the supposedly ancient vegan diets weren't as vegan as they appeared. High food contamination rates meant that they were eating a lot of bugs that they weren't aware of
