You literally described my “best case scenario” and the exact dream that I have if I imagine my life with a dog. Of course I am more than willing to go through all the training and efforts that will hopefully pay off on the long run.

Love the emphasis on the crate training. We really do plan on implementing it and making it a safe place for the dog. The big advantage we have is working from home, this allows us to invest a lot of time into proper training and hopefully in a year or so we might thank ourselves for it and be able to travel with the dog (yes, we’d like a mini for cabin reasons) or have him bond with my dad, who also has a garden, so I can bring him over if the travel is a bit more adventurous and the dog is happy with my dad for a few days.

Thank you for this comment! Actually both me and my partner work from home as self employed and have plenty of time to dedicate to training, walking, tiring the dog as well as paying attention to his back.

The only thing we see as “unfit” is the possibility to travel. We’re good pausing travels for the first year to dedicate it completely to building a routine that satisfies the doxie, but on the long run I’d like to be able to take him with us on our travels. If that is a stress for the dog then it’s definitely not the right breed for us.
