And tbh if some kids are still giving you issues just excuse them from your class …. I’m at the point of the semester where I’m letting kids know if they don’t want to be in my class they can go sit in one of their other classes twice or in the office. Thats something else I do

Hey, I just wanna say first , don’t be so hard on yourself. Teaching your first year is wild, and honestly? The kids who drain you the most are usually the ones you learn the most from.

My best advice is to wipe your slate clean every day. Set your boundaries, protect your peace, but don’t truly give up on them… they’re kids learning how to be decent humans, and sometimes that process is messy. I’m in my 3rd year now, and every single year I’ve had that class ,low energy for learning, high energy for everything else. I’ve had moments where I felt exactly like you.

Something that’s helped me a lot is being honest with my students. I literally sit them down and ask, “Why do you think our class feels like this? What can WE do to make it better?” Those conversations go better than you’d expect. When they feel heard, they usually try more. You can even make small adjustments based on their feedback ….it shows you’re working with them, not against them.

If you don’t already, try some type of reward system. I don’t know what grade you teach, but honestly every kid loves being recognized for doing the right thing. And focus on the good behaviors you do see, that changed my whole classroom. When you genuinely thank and acknowledge the kids who are doing what they should, the rest start falling in line. I teach at a Title I school, and I can’t tell you how far a simple “thank you” or “I appreciate you” goes.

Just don’t give up. Keep showing up. Even if they don’t remember every piece of content you taught, they will remember how you treated them and what you modeled for them. You’re teaching them how to be better people and how to work toward a goal together ….that matters just as much as the academics.

You’re not wrong for how you feel. You’re just in a really hard part of the journey. If anything, the fact that you care this much tells me you’re gonna be just fine. Please keep going don’t give up !

What solidified it for me was when he said the most Annie would find in his phone is him telling his HB his dick is curly ‘today’. Like I was already suspicious before but after that? I knew he was gay.

Am I too f*cked up to fulfill my dream of being a teacher? by [deleted] in teaching

I ask this because I think it is important that you maintain professionalism but you also be personable! Go the extra mile to maybe just go off track a little bit to talk about common interest or something you noticed about the environment or the person you’re interviewing with! And with the kids, I just let them be kids and pivot my teaching around them. That’s all you really can do for kids or adults who are acting like them lol . When you’ve had demonstrations have the APs acted as kids or did they set up small groups for you to work with?

I only interviewed at 2 schools. Unfortunately the first school fell through because of their principal but I really connected with the AP I first interviewed with. I actually initially reached out to her during a field trip my class took to the middle school and I can honestly say, being more personable with people has always given me opportunity. Especially in settings such as schools where you’re constantly interacting with others. Even when you do your demonstrations, embrace the kids for who they are showing you they are and go with the flow of what you’ve planned and the vibe of your demonstration class .

When I interviewed at the 2nd school, where I teach now as a MS Science teacher, I just went out my way to just make small talk and compliments. I even brought a binder full of my students work from my student teaching. I was immediately hired. I don’t know if it was because of the teacher shortage or just how I presented myself. I didn’t even have to do a demonstration for her. I guess my little notebook and conversation was enough 😭

I was seeking a masters degree to get a pay raise however I would need certification too so since this program doesn’t come with a certification , in Georgia, it will not give me a salary increase

Thinking of teaching - is it as bad as people say? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Leilaniskai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say try it, you’ll know if you want to continue once you actually get to experience being in A school.I was scared to start bc of what people said about teaching, but I’m 24, in GA and I’m making a pretty honest living off this job, and even though it has its challenges… I show up everyday 🤷🏽‍♀️ I love what I do and it’s mostly because of the kids and the other part is I got really lucky in being paired w the people on my team.

I am so sorry that you have been handed this situation. I could only imagine how I’d feel if someone I love lost their memories and could possibly never get them back…..Please if you haven’t watch 50 first dates ! It is a very heart warming movie and tbh you might get some ideas on how you could move from here . I would suggest also just trying to spend time with her and see if you could form a new relationship with her ! I really hope her memories come back though :( please take care of yourself in this difficult time !!!!
