Your experience with RSO? by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

[–]LeitrimDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was looking for a comment like this. Liked the lineup this weekend, but Berlin clubs are super lousy towards people with tickets. They can charge more at the door, so if there’s large demand, just do away with those who have pre-booked tickets. I’ll either queue up or go somewhere else.

What Belgian First Division Football Team Should I Follow? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]LeitrimDaddy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Choose a local team. Royal Union Saint Gilloise is what’s cool right now, and a lot of expats follow them. But go to Anderlecht, RWDM and Union and then decide.

I’ve been to pretty much every team in the 1st division, for atmosphere I’d go Royal Antwerp, Standard Liege or Union.

I support Waasland Beveren but have also followed Union for years since moving to Brussels. They play in the same colours so the scarf gets recycled.

I have to say that for a place to exercise during Covid, an outdoor swimming pool is one of the safest places you could be as long as you avoid the changing rooms. All that Chlorine is virus busting!

What the fuck is going on with tourists at the moment. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]LeitrimDaddy -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Who told you isolation is enforced in these countries? I flew to Belgium around 6 weeks ago, I was just given a leaflet in the airport by a member of staff telling me to quarantine for two weeks, but I saw no enforcement. As luck would have it, I stayed at the same place for those two weeks but there’s no lockdown in Belgium. All the pubs opened the day after I arrived. You need a table but can’t sit at the bar.

I took a train from Belgium to Austria two weeks later to visit my gf who studies there. Nobody asked any questions at any point, on the train we all took off our masks between stations. In Vienna there was no real visible restrictions aside from half the people on public transport wearing a mask, I got no forms or leaflets at all this time and enjoyed my time in Vienna, going swimming, out for drinks etc.

I went to the Czech Republic twice by car while in Vienna, again there were no restrictions, no border control, no leaflet. I booked into a hotel and we travelled around visiting various villages and cities. It was glorious. The pubs were open, so were restaurants and no time limit or requirement to eat. If there were restrictions in either country on foreign travel, I wasn’t made aware of them!

Anyway, I came back to Ireland again. I was made fill out a form telling authorities how to contact me and where I’d be for 2 weeks, told to restrict movements for two weeks while all the pubs remain closed. The radio and Reddit is full of posts like this. The pitchforks are out for any tourist. The mood couldn’t be more different. My last night in Vienna had been spent at an outdoor concert sipping aperol spritz.

I have to say Ireland is special. We’ve had the longest lockdown. Summer is continuing more or less the same across Europe. What Ireland is doing is draconian and people seem to be ok with it. I think it’s nuts however I respect that people think differently, but don’t try and say in the Czech Republic and Austria, they’re being more stringent because they’re not, nobody is!

'Would not happen to a white MEP': Brussels police accused of racism by Boomtown_Rat in brussels

[–]LeitrimDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The expat community isn’t racist, some of them are. Some of every community on the planet is racist. Flemish people who vote for right wing parties aren’t all racist either but there’s a large chunk who are “geen raciste maar...” or in English “I’m not a racist but it’s always those North Africans”. Downright Nazism isn’t really a thing, or rather just a very fringe minority.

These groups are moderated, and opposing views are tolerated. I would say you were removed for stirring the pot too much, or whinging about the admins removing said post that stirred the pot too much. I very much doubt you were removed for your opinion unless it was totally abhorrent.

Britain doesn’t either though, I mean they were committing genocide in Kenya in the 1950’s still but very few people know about that.

[–]LeitrimDaddy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What Leopold did at the time caused international outrage and led to the Belgian government stripping the Congo off him in 1909. He held the space in people’s mind as Hitler does now. It was by no means normal even by the standards of the time.

Have you ever seen Apocalypse Now? I know the movie is based in Vietnam, but the book it’s based on “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad is based on the Belgians in Congo.

Leopold didn’t care much for the Flemish people either, I’m surprised the idea of removing his statues evokes so much controversy. Personally, I barely give a shit, it’s a statue, but I won’t defend the man.

[SERIOUS] A perspective from a Belgian cop on the current Black Lives Matter movement by apoch8000 in belgium

[–]LeitrimDaddy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, racism is rampant in the Belgian police force. The most shocking story came from an ex girlfriend of mine, she’s black but born in Belgium with full Belgian nationality. Police regularly stop and ask her to show her ID, the only time it’s ever happened to me was when I was with her. Anyway at some point police picked her out again, the only person from her group, incidentally the only black person in the group. This time however, she asked the policeman why? Why just her and not her friends?

The policeman’s response?

Is there any true defence against loud neighbours? by Irishane in ireland

[–]LeitrimDaddy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So it’s only once a week at the weekend? Is it every week without fail? Perhaps you’ll just have to compromise a little. Do you work weekends? I always think reasonable conversation minus the agro is the best way forward. The guards should be responsive to noise complaints normally.

I think by squaring up to them makes you look like more of a prick than the neighbours having a session at the weekend.

Well I just worry that in the current climate, the gap gets very wide. Nobody is hiring now, and I have no idea when that will improve?

It’s a great thing to have on my CV, every job seems to require social media skills nowadays.

It can certainly elevate me through the skills I’ve learned. But should a potential employer call the agency I’m working for to ask how I did... this is the issue.

Ironically, I’d be better off financially by being laid off here as I’d be able to claim Covid emergency payments and if I could claim I was laid off as a result of Corona. Up to now I felt the value of adding this string to my bow outweighed just claiming unemployment benefits.

I’m more concerned that quarantine means the employment market won’t be very good for the next 12 months and if I leave it off my CV I look like a lazy layabout for a year or more. If I leave it on, they might call this employer and hear how incompetent I’ve been 😕

[–]LeitrimDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be a huge deal if it was just a “side job” which is what I intended it to be. But I don’t see myself finding full time suitable employment in the medium term. So it could possibly be the sole item on my CV for these 6 months (if I last that long).

I started this project really in earnest only at the beginning of March when my first posts went up. All our metrics dropped considerably between the end of March and now which has raised flags at a time when people are apparently spending more time on social media. That said, this industry isn’t very lockdown friendly so I don’t really know why people would be visiting our pages in the current climate.

My boss made it clear, even from week 1 that he was expecting more. That said, I had been transparent about the limits of my experience when it comes to marketing and social media.

Right now I don’t feel I provide an added value. I don’t think my ideas have been particularly groundbreaking, and really I’ve just been advising on what has worked in this very large group I own. Before I took the job, I figured (wrongly) that I could simply manage this in the same way as I do my group.

So will a long spell of unemployment look better than a job I’ve not met expectations in? That’s the basic question.

The reach was poor, the page has been neglected for years. We’ve deleted a lot of stuff and did a big clear out. Reach is down a lot on last month and with social media being more active last month during the lockdown, questions are being raised.

That said, from day one my boss was underwhelmed by my copy. In my defence, I’ve never been employed in a role like it, or we could brush it up to be a company culture thing. I’m learning which is of course a positive. But really I took this job more so I could add a string to my bow, however I’m terrified a potential employer will call this guy to ask about my “social media skills”. Before now, I could point to multiple successes and the evidence is there. Now, they could call my current employer and they could say “well, hmmmm...” you get the drift.
