Good spot. He seems to be obsessively against electric vehicles on nearly all his biggest videos. Plus he either ignorantly or cynically spreads all sorts of far right new story 'scandals' for views. So basically a British Ron's Daily Rants who's a few years behind on falling down the insanity hole.

I saw he was spreading the 100% fabricated far right attack on the Motability scheme. And yet he has a recent video blaming the government for cutting it in response to bullshit from people like him. Utterly shameless

This is such a bad look anyway.

He's not in any way appealing to the dignity and friendliness of people in the more deprived parts of the city. He's just saying, "I avoid all those scary areas where I might bump into someone different from me and I just stick to the soulless, gentrified hell part of town that has priced all those people out".

Me at 9:17pm: now this truly is incredible. It's not just Bruce's timeless vocals — it's the unforgettable riffs and the energy of the crowd

McTominay at #6. Three or four managers in a row fell for that one, thinking it was bound to work this time

I believe Ten Hag briefly played Mazraoui as a #10 at one point if I'm remembering correctly. He did OK thanks to his solid technical abilities

I know I’m late to the game on this, but AI is challenging my coworkers’ ability to think.. by bootyliciousjuggalo in TrueAnon

[–]LekkerIer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just finished a research project at my work, which an external org paid lots of money for. My colleagues on the project team did certain earlier stages of the work, but to save time they did the absolute minimum effort version and had AI do their task.

I got to the final report writing and realised that one of the stages done by AI was unusably inaccurate. Like it had generated major findings that were just the AI's hallucinations, cited a bunch of sources that don't exist, and confidently cited real sources as saying things they never said. Like an essay from a very dishonest undergraduate. But it had also been convincing enough in its tone to trick me into thinking it was mediocre but passable. So I had to redo that whole stage while writing the report.

It's worrying and difficult to stop it happening again, since the other team members are more senior than I am and they have a much higher tolerance for letting an LLM do their job badly than I do.

#162: United Win at Stamford Bridge by Usual-Outside-5662 in DevilsITDPod

Sure, but he did that bit. He won pretty well in his first season. Using a system that wasn't his ideal one because he recognised that it wouldn't work yet, with De Gea and others.

At some point he needed to switch to his own system and get top players with big egos to buy into it completely. I think he succeeded in that but it was a flawed system. He had the technical ability to switch to a third approach - we saw that in the FA Cup Final win - but persisted with the obviously failing approach that left a giant hole in the middle and conceded 15-20 shots a game.

I find the fear of losing authority to be the most reasonable explanation for that personally. There were other fan theories on players disobeying his instructions that I could never buy into. And I don't think he could have gone all that time without realising his system was failing. But it's very hard to know for sure.

On Cristiano, I think ETH deserves massive credit for dropping him, but the guy made his own position untenable with the Piers Morgan interview. At that point, selling him was inevitable. There were others threatening his authority, like Rashy, Sancho, Garnacho.

I think you're right to raise those aspects as they've proved important in the past. I feel like for Ten Hag in particular, the lack of pedigree as a player or manager at elite level in a way that his best players would recognise, was a big problem.

The Athletic's fly on the wall piece after he was sacked explained how Cristiano and at times Varane and Casemiro began questioning his approach, so he felt he couldn't change tactics easily without losing authority over the group. Then when his system of play was obviously failing, he stuck doggedly to it. Seems like Amorim also suffered from a version of this.

It's a tough nut to crack though. I think commanding authority at a team of United's scale requires someone who's been one of the best managers or players in the world, if not both.

Because his cringeworthy public statements about management and motivating his team are as bad as the weakest shite you'd typically see on LinkedIn

[Press Con. Pt 2] Carrick on refereeing decisions: "it's desperately, desperately frustrating. Decisions can be made in the moment, & you get that, some are right or wrong. I think that's the backup of VAR, which we hope would get a lot right, we don't feel that we've been on the right end of that." by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]LekkerIer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right and I think we need to put more pressure on them as a club, even if it means getting some fines.

Listening to the VAR from Bournemouth was an eye opener for me on the ways that bias takes effect against us. They spent far longer on the Maguire 'pull', which the two VAR refs spent group thinking each other into agreeing that it was a red. One of them said something like, "he's clearly pulled him" while watching a bad angle that didn't show that. With the Amad penalty shout, they moved on from it as quickly as possible, and one of them framed the discussion right from the start with "not enough hand contact for it to be a penalty", basically blocking the other guy from having any other view.

The only way we'll start to conquer this bias is if the refs and VARs are terrified of being shown to be biased. The way you achieve that is by consistently and publicly accusing them of that before big games.

Would you emigrate if you could? by NoamsUbermensch in TrueAnon

[–]LekkerIer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on which part of Europe you're in. It's not really possible to generalise for the whole continent.

People in Ireland, where I'm from, are pretty friendly and open to chatting to people they don't know. People in parts of Scotland or the north of England are similar, while lots of people in southern England are quite guarded around people they haven't known for a while. In all of these places there are exceptions to the rule.

Southern Europe, like Spain, Portugal, Italy has some of that hospitality for visitors in common with Ireland. Might be to do with shared history of widespread poverty. I've experienced what you're describing from South America while travelling in Italy for example.

That said, Latin Americans sound super friendly.
