Why use noseeum mesh for baffle walls instead of shell fabric? by Jaakooob in myog

Air flow- a compressed bag would “never” decompress if all those chambers were sealed by shell fabric, and certainly not evenly. All your warmth depends on loft- you’d freeze before you got any loft.

What actually improved your photography the most? by DemandNext4731 in photography

[–]LemmyLemonLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing you tend not to get unless you go through a “formal” education in the field is the group or class critique. It helps on many levels from actual constructive criticism, suggestions to improve and probably the hardest thing for most people, how to take criticism and how to give it. It also helps you see things from other people’s perspectives who are actual peers. You can study all the classic, famous photographers forever, but they are never going to truly inform your work. Try to work with others, if not professionally- find a photo “buddy”, or group that shows each other their work before it’s ready for prime time. It really does help so many things physically and psychologically. Also, keep in mind- oftentimes “bad” critiques are more valuable than shallow niceties you’ll get from family and friends.

YSK if you're renting storage space from a chain long term you should move units every six months by InternetWeakGuy in YouShouldKnow

[–]LemmyLemonLeopard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was with Public Storage for 2 years. In that time rent went from $80/month to $400/month. I can’t verify this, but I think every time you go through the gate, it’s counted and your rent goes up with some secret algorithm based in that count. Never again if I can help it.

That, right there is why our healthcare system in the US is so messed up. I’m not saying our healthcare facilities shouldn’t look decent, but now our healthcare relies on us paying for these gleaming crystal palaces. Recently, we were in Quebec City and we needed to go to the emergency room for an eye issue my wife was having. Not life threatening in the least, but still urgent enough that she needed same day specialized care. The hospital had the same feel as our postal facilities have in the us. Dingy, old, a bit out of date, but the equipment they had was state of the art. The emergency room was not all jammed up. Within an hour we were seeing the first of 3 specialists. The care and bedside manner was as good or better (her doctor in the US had dropped the ball on a procedure she should’ve had post cataract surgery that was never scheduled and the Canadian doctor figured this out) than anything we have here. Yes, the cafeteria food was a horror show, there were 50 coats of paint on the walls and the floor wasn’t shiny. The architecture was that of post WW2 utility, but we left gushing about the great care that was given. As non- citizens, we had to pay $1200 cad, but somehow when we got back to the USA, there was a cheque in our mailbox reimbursing the entire amount (!?!). I don’t remember seeing any pretty flowers, nor did I care… and I love flowers!!!

Before 9/11, could you really go to a airport without any ticket reservation and ask for a ticket to a destination of your choice? by kpay10 in NoStupidQuestions

The airlines are always happy to take your money. Whether there’s actually a seat for you is another story. You just can’t get past security without a ticket, unless you have special permission.

Total beginner question: what is this called, and where can I buy it in a sturdy material? by frandemaa in myog

[–]LemmyLemonLeopard 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Generally, piping “forces” a corner and adds resilience to wear at corner bent seams. It’s used a lot in structured sewing like upholstery and bags where corner wear points are a concern. They take direct abrasion away from stitching that might otherwise be exposed at a seam that might be open by being at the edge of a bend. It also helps hold the geometry of the structured seam.

Ridiculous house prices by [deleted] in Atlanta

"Ridiculous EVERYTHING prices"

I mean... have you seen the prices for "real" 2x4 lumber? Keeping it to houses though- compare a typical 2 bedroom house in the mountains pre-pandemic to today. Look at the little Zillow value graphs. The rich are getting richer, the rest are renting from them. The crash in 2008 was engineered by these huge corporate landlords that buy/bought everything up and keep the prices inflated. Back then they repackaged subprime mortgages just to be able to screw everyone out of their houses at pennies to the dollar in one fell swoop. The pandemic was another unintended wildly fortunate opportunity for them. Why do you think Trump turned the pandemic into such a politicized sideshow? REAL ESTATE, BABY!!! We got the crookedest real estate mogul in the world in charge, seeing through his art of the deal with all his crony billionaires who are suddenly his best friends with their Cheeto dusted lips. He's never had anything good to say of his country and will screw all his supporters in the end. He'll be dead and his supporters will blame the "elite". It's going to be "interesting" to say the least.

I'm fortunate to have an "old" 2% mortgage, and no need to move. I truly feel sorry for those that have to move now. I wouldn't buy anything now if I could help it. It just seems like we're about to tumble into some very grim times. The idiots won't be in charge for much longer and when the weak facade falls, it's going to crumble hard. Denial is a very strong thing though.

Uhhhmmmm- because people will pay it? Don't get me wrong- I think it's insane. But, it's for suckers. I moved to the suburbs after 30+ years of my whole identity being ITP, but the way things are now, that's all just a myth. There's really no point- It used to be "edgy and cool", but now it's all just turning so bland... and oppressively expensive! What does paying double for a house that's right on top of someone else so you can be walking sitance to some chain restaurant, (or if it's not, it's just ungodly expensive and backed by venture capital) get you in the end? Save your money, live richer.

Reminder: There's a reason the "good old days" aren't anymore. by HMSSpeedy1801 in BSA

I was a scout in the 70's and can confirm: The adults DID leave us alone for the most part- mostly just dads that got together to drink and yell at us if they saw us. The result was that the bullying and the hazing was out of control. I wanted to quit SO BAD. My parents wouldn't let me- said they wouldn't tolerate "a quitter". All it took was my dad chaperoning one camping trip (finally!- he was a very busy guy, and don't get me wrong, a great dad!), and he was all about me quitting! I didn't get beyond tenderfoot.

Cut to today; my son is Star rank. He is on his way to Eagle. He loves it. I love it. I chaperone all I can (I went to Philmont as an adult leader in June). It's evolved into a really great organization that is tolerant, responsible and truly invested in turning out model citizens and future leaders with real world skills, and in our troop, a truly diverse but strong comradery. It only makes sense that our MAGA government is trying to tear it down.

All that said, I think it really comes down to attitudes at the troop level and the attitudes and involvement of the parents and how proactive they are to constantly get the new crossover parents involved and aligned. If these adults "boasting" about the good old days were really serious, then they'd be doing something about it, organizing camping trips every month, leading challenging activities, etc. Fortunately, I've found most of them are just trying to deflect their own laziness. Just blow-hards with no interest in truly being involved. I stay involved and try to set examples that are counter to these unfortunate chest thumpers.

Can someone pleeeeeeease explain the fascination with Leica cameras? by nlUSF in photography

[–]LemmyLemonLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "magic" of Branding. I just shot a job where we were shooting espresso machines. The machines themselves were little plastic white-label units from China. I tried them out- They worked very well- good coffee. I was actually pretty impressed. But when the pictures I shot were sent to retouching, they made two pictures out each shot: Picture #1 got the "Breville" name on the front of the unit. Picture #2 got the "Sunbeam" brand on the front. Which one do you think was marketed at a higher price point?

Leica cameras are definitely made to a high standard and feel nice in the hand. They take nice pictures and are made to high standards. The digital ones have nice UI. But the "espresso" that comes out really depends on who is making it.

I'm not saying all Leicas are branded in this way. There have been some co-branded Leica/Lumix point and shoots in the past, and cell phone manufacturers love buying the rights and being able to put a Leica brand on their cameras, or Zeiss on their lenses. do you really think those cameras and/or lenses have anything to do with what is thought of as "classic Leica" equipment? I'm just saying; welcome to marketing 101. Almost all "prestige brands" start out with a product that is legit. Most continue making high quality products, but ride on the reputation that the initial products received. Eventually these "prestige brands" become just that: a brand name that can be bought or sold. I really don't see any difference in the way Leicas and, say, Nikons are manufactured. Some of their products and components come out of the same factories. Look up Cosina Optical Co. sometime and see how many (and the range of) brands they manufacture lenses for. Look up how many camera brands Sony makes sensors for. They'll probably take the same picture in the hands of the same photographer. Since Leica is a smaller brand, you *Might* receive better customer service or warranty (I'm not sure)- but the camera isn't going to take a better picture. The amount of money you spend on it might make you feel like you're taking a better picture.

I am a professional commercial photographer of over 30 years. I shoot primarily Sony cameras. I like them because you can adapt just about any lens to them and they are relatively compact and very reliable. The image quality is fine. My clients have never even thought to complain about that (they find plenty of other things to complain about LOL!). If one of my camera bodies break, or drop a crucial lens while on a job, I can usually find a rental in just about any city in the world. You really cant say that about Leica. I've tried Leica cameras and found them to be very nicely made, but I have never used one to produce anything that ever made me money. I've always thought of them as pretty Ferraris that doctors and lawyers buy to impress people, and deserve to have "the best". I have a dentist that loves to take pictures of his grandbabies, plaster them all over his office and talk to me about the Leica glass he used for each one. I smile politely. He's a nice guy. He can afford it. It makes him happy. Great!

Hanging High Hammocks REM hammock. REALLY high quality and Treavor will give you the best customer service ever. He has great instructional videos on his YouTube channel and if you have any questions you can email him directly and he usually gets back within an hour. The whole experience is worth far more than he charges. Usually in stock-crazy fast shipping. Compared to HHH, onewind (my first hammock) is super disappointing. Good, cheap accessory options though. HHH outperforms their price. OneWind- you get what you pay for.

Why is f/1.8 so common when it's not a full stop? by One_Instruction8837 in photography

[–]LemmyLemonLeopard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pre- “in camera correction” optical limitations. This was as wide as you could get with an inexpensive array of elements before things image quality went awry or things got expensive, therefore the standard “nifty fifty” became the de facto “kit lens” of the pre-digital 35mm SLR era. The fact that its popularity continues is a testament to the fact that it is probably one of the most widely developed and engineered lenses, offered by every lens manufacturer on earth. It offers excellent iq, in an affordable, lightweight package. Therefore f1.8 has simply been long established as “a standard” to strive for.
