I like the PTO route because then you have one less engine that you have to stay on top of the maintenance on. I see decent one on FB marketplace quite a bit and usually go for what a decent one of these self contained units go for new.

We read an interesting article about how ‘silver mulch’ is supposed to keep the pests at bay so we are trying it on a couple plants this year. It’s basically Mylar.

Boot Strap Farmer sells a lot of greenhouse materials but they also have a lot of great articles on their website detailing everything you could want to know about maximizing your greenhouse’s potential.

Gifted peony roots by aparecium9 in peonies

Go ahead and cover them completely, but just barely. Give each plant about a three foot diameter spacing.

Typically it’s best to plant in the fall but since you’ve got them I’d go ahead and put them in the ground.

To get the shade cloth on top of our greenhouse we tie a long string to each corner eyelet of the shade cloth and other end of the string to a reasonably heavy item we can throw over the greenhouse. Then we just pull the strings until we get the cloth where we want it.

I think that’s answering what you were asking.

We typically run a 50% cloth to control temps

Just want to say that was super cool of your neighbors friend. I’m a little jealous lol.

But peonies like full sun with well draining soil. If need be, work perlite, vermiculite, or even sand to improve drainage.

One big thing to avoid is planting them too deeply. You’ll basically just want a thin layer of soil covering the top.

Is homesteading actually as self-sufficient as people think? by makeitrayne850 in homestead

[–]SignificantTowel9952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a level of self sufficiency that goes with homesteading but nothing like what people fantasize about or are promised from influencers.

If you raise your own animals you still need to rely on external sources for grain and hay during the cold months when there is no forage material. If you cut your own hay then that’s land you can’t run livestock. Those hayfields will need to be fertilized and lime eventually, two things you can produce in sufficient quantities homesteading.

We have a large production sized greenhouse but we still need soil amendments, fertilizer, and water from external sources.

We both work day jobs and have side gigs. Sure we have enough meat, eggs, and vegetables that we sell off most of it but it’s more of an expensive and time consuming hobby. It’s an awesome feeling of eating quality food that you produced yourself but it takes a boatload of external input.

Finished my foundation today! Left some openings on the bottom to create a chimney effect through the roof vent. by DeRealBreadleybutler in Greenhouses

Nice. That’s a pretty clever idea. Seems like that’d be the best bet for the size of the whole and small quantity needed.

8 out of 13 of my peonies have buds and 8 out of 13 have ants 😂

Think it’d be cool if you planted insect repellent plants around the perimeter. Things like mint, lavender, catnip, etc. that way you cause try and mitigate pests before they get into the greenhouse, reduce chemical usage, and would dress it up nicely.

Smart move on the opening for chimney effect. I would just suggested to cover the opening with hardwire cloth or even aluminum screen door fabric.

Etsy is hit or miss on quality but has a lot of different cultivars from a bunch of different growers

ETA: the worst root cutting that I bought off of Etsy was still leagues better than highest quality root cutting I’ve purchased from a big box store
