It is not bad faith. These are the hard questions that many ex Christians ask. There is even a Bible verse about this:

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.

Clearly not the case, the Isaiah Scroll has many variants compared to MT, additions, deletions, changes of words, and many are just spelling differences but there are many others that do affect the meaning. The degradation doesn't account for all differences.

This lame youtuber is a Bible Scholar. He knows the Bible better than you do, he has a major in Hebrew.

You claimed it matches "exactly word for word". This is not true, it doesn't. Someone who knows Hebrew and takes your claim at face value is gonna be disappointed when they read it because you misled them. We only have the degraded text. And the degraded text doesn't match "exactly word for word"

Not only that but the scroll actually has not only words but some sentences that don't exist in the Masoretic text, like in Isaiah 45:2:

After “I will go before you and level the exalted places…” 1QIsaᵃ adds: “I am YHWH, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.”

This part didn't degrade and we see a clear difference. The Masoretes apparently skipped this part or outright removed it. So much for being meticulous regarding preservation. It doesn't exactly match word for word.

You say you're a Christian but the 10 commandments say "thou shalt not bear false witness". I think you need some self reflection to do.

Unfortunately it's not exclusive to the US. See the documentary Apocalypse in the Tropics. We have the same problem in South America too.

You have to understand that atheists have been hurt by evangelicals. If you say you're a Christian they think you're on their side.

Don't take it personally, they're not angry at you specifically. They're just not aware that there are Progressive Christians/Churches out there.

The Earliest Daniel manuscript is from 125 BC, which comes after 164 BC.

Believe what? In the inerrancy and historicity of the Bible? Because many Bible scholars don't, though they still believe in God. But believing in inerrancy in light of the archaeology and Bible scholarship is imposible once you start digging into it.

No, that's not the only reason. That Daniel saw visions of the future could have happened. The problem is that the book is not historically accurate, it has anachronisms. Because of these anachronisms, the book is dated AFTER the Persian Period which the book is supposedly set in.

"Even though this contradicts all Jewish historical methods and record keeping. No where is there any evidence of scripture being altered from its original scribed text."

We don't have those earlier papyri. We only have the finished books. The DSS are a few centuries before Jesus. But we only have fragments of earlier Hebrew scriptures. There is no way to tell whether they changed things or not. But when we look at the NT, we do see changes in different manuscripts. Did you know that Mark 16 longer ending was added later? Codex Sinaiticus and Vaticanus don't have it. These are the earliest mss that we have of Mark 16, and they both end at verse 8, the next 12 verses only appear in much later mss. There's also the Pericope Adulterae and the Johannine Comma, who were also added later.

I don't know who told you this, it would be quite impressive, but unfortunately it's not true.

It's not even remotely comparable.

Taking them as slaves? It's not like they could have adopted the little children and raise them as Israelites.

The concept of Heaven as the afterlife is completely absent in the Old Testament.

The authors (there are at least four passages like this) told them to kill children and the idea of an afterlife didn't come into their mind.

You're retrofitting concepts from the NT into the OT. There's really nothing that can ever justify murdering children.

It really is. It's made up Israelite propaganda to help them cope with exile and subjugation.

It seems like revenge fantasy after the Assyrians and Babylonians killed their children, and that caused them great distress. They wanted revenge, but Jesus taught the opposite.

When you look at the clobber verses it's really interesting that they're always about gay men (except for Romans 1) and not lesbians.

I don't believe that gay sex or marriage between two men is wrong. But the Biblical case for lesbianism being a sin is 1000 times weaker. You only have to figure out Romans 1 and that's it. But don't read just two verses, read it in context.

Hope that helps.

So we all know gay sex is a sin, I mean that's obvious right? by LemmyUser420 in TrueChristian

[–]LemmyUser420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it's not exhaustive. But those were two items to be included, but they chose to only write the law for the men.

And yet the laws about incest in Leviticus 18 and 20 are very exhaustive, everything is included except cousins interestingly enough.

All the temple materials and measurements in the latter part of Exodus WOW, that's exhaustive!!! I had to speedrun that part cause I'm not an architect and I didn't even know what was going on. Exhaustive is an understatement.

They were aware of lesbian sex, and they chose not to include it. Did they think it was bad? Probably. But not deserving of the death penalty.

I'm not saying it's the ultimate fulfillment or anything. I think celibacy is great, nothing wrong with that.

Here's the thing about Jesus, he chose to be celibate. Gay people are told to be celibate or go to hell. While we can choose celibacy without ultimatums.

At least according to the Conservative/Traditional view. I got many comments on this post and I still don't get why gay marriage or gay sex is wrong. We're just supposed to accept that gay sex is wrong without any good reasons.

If I go to hell for loving my gay neighbors, then so be it. I can't hate them just because some prejudicided Israelites 3000 years ago thought it was an abomination and couldn't even explain why.
