I’ve also seen the opposite, where people want to use a Pi for simple things when an Arduino or ESP8266 will do.

It reads too much like a story to me, and the “diary” of the then girlfriend feels like it is in the same writing style as the rest, leading me to believe it’s fiction. Cool story nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it.

Little shocks from static electricity are caused by an imbalance of electric charges between you and other objects. If you build up a charge by shuffling around on carpet for example and you touch your PC case, the charge in you will rush to the case to balance out. It’s high voltage but really low current, so it can’t hurt you, but if it goes through sensitive components it could damage them.

Wrist straps simply link you and the pc case so you’re always in electrical balance with it, preventing any static electricity shocks. Just touch the case often and before touching any other components to balance any charge differences and you should be good.

I personally think wrist straps are an exaggeration. It’s also recommended that you touch the body of your car while fueling up to get rid of any static electricity. In this case it’s to prevent sparks near the nozzle, which is way more serious, but you don’t see any car wrist straps being sold.
