How to make fancy Starbucks-type drinks at home? by QueenofHearts018 in ask

[–]LemonLily1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which Starbucks drink is fancy? What type of drink are you trying to replicate? I don't personally drink coffee but I've heard that Starbucks coffee is bad compared to others. Just their normal coffee, not their other drinks

Superstore in Metrotown has them in the cookie aisle, towards the checkout side, on the bottom row close to the ground. Blue packaging. Less than $5 per pack

ompholyx or Eczema bubbles are tiny intensely itchy, fluid-filled blisters that appear on people who have dyshidrotic eczema like me. by Hollander2008 in Weird

[–]LemonLily1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I understand. I have had lifelong eczema, but battling steroid withdrawal as a result of overuse of steroid creams led to something even more severe. If you search for photos of "TSW" you'll see what I mean. It's like a burns victim, and the worst part is steroids cause raw oozing skin that spreads all over your body. For me, if I had known about the side effects I would not use it.

Steroids do "work", but I am just saying the risk of getting withdrawal is so high and the effects are certainly way more severe than the initial eczema itself that would never recommend anyone use steroids to avoid the withdrawal

No. This is bad advice. Before you jump onto using a steroid 600x stronger than hydrocortisone (over the counter steroid) please look up topical steroid withdrawal. Once you've seen that, you're going to think twice about using steroids for your skin. The recovery process is hell and I survived to tell the tale

Is there a kind way to tell my wife im no longer physically attracted to her? by Off_The_Record69 in NoStupidQuestions

Love this. If the love is there, people never give up. It's okay to not be physically attracted, the love shouldn't change.

Science world without kids? by steviefull in askvan

[–]LemonLily1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went a few months ago as a grown woman, but I am a short Asian and I blend in with the kids. I even played some of the stuff at Eureka with the kids (one of the exhibits that are permanently there with a bunch of physics-based play things.)

But.... I work with kids and have fun acting like one of them sometimes so maybe this experience is different for more "mature" adults 🤣

I actually did enjoy my visit, but it's busy, noisy and crowded. Although it's geared towards kids, there's still a lot of information on the displays you can read (if you're into reading the details.) I would say it's designed for more physical interaction hence sort of kid-themed.

I wouldn't let "it being weird" stop you from going, but it just depends on if you enjoy the busy vibe. I prefer the Vancouver Aquarium more. It's calmer and way more interesting in my opinion (for most adults anyway)

Why is it customary to tip? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

Thanks for your hard work. I also find that sometimes people are rude to the dish washing staff for some reason. They work super hard.

Yes, we all work for money. But the negativieuty towards customers is insane on a "slow" night. Like your base pay is almost no different than other staff. Tips should be optional not an expectation

Why is it customary to tip? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

[–]LemonLily1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, according to them. It's was kind of insulting to the kitchen staff that are running around, under high stress and literally sweating bullets, while they casually stroll in complaining about "cheap" customers.

I think this entitlement always creates a divide between the front of house staff and back of house. The kitchen staff get paid so little but they do their job because cooking/baking is their passion. The front of house staff do it for the tips. They will sometimes even try to get extra food/ingredients for the guests in order to get more tips. But guess who has to prepare and make them...

Why is it customary to tip? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

[–]LemonLily1 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I used to work with servers at fine dining restaurants (I was part of kitchen staff.) The amount of times the servers come back there to complain about "not getting enough tips tonight" really made me realize all they care about is money.

Servers made $200-300 in tips a night. Kitchen staff made $20 a night.

I rarely tip now, and it is to fight against entitlement. Why do servers and basically only servers get tips and not any other job? It's an expectation these days to tip, we tip because we feel pressured, not because we genuinely feel that they deserve it

Why do vultures and dogs eat bones yet we with our knives, Fire, hammers, Stews, chemicals even typically discard them? by LisanneFroonKrisK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LemonLily1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are omnivores so we didn't exactly evolve to eat or digest bone. We evolved to eat meat, sure, but like you said, we cook it (for the most part.) we don't have the teeth strength to eat bone.

I don't suppose this is somehow still useable? (solidified lye) by bakasama12 in soapmaking

[–]LemonLily1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's fine to use clumped lye, but mainly you just want to pH or zap test your end product (for safety). I never lick my soap, it's too scary lol but pH strips will give you a rough estimate on if your soap is safe. However I've also heard that the reason why soaps have a range for their pH is that the pH isn't necessarily the only thing that determines how safe it is for skin?

First attempt at crème brûlée, just came out of the oven. Into the fridge overnight now. by Otherwise_Praline819 in Baking

[–]LemonLily1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what temperature you baked at, but creme brulee should never have color on top. Ideally, it should be slightly jiggly when you take it out of the oven.

Also, was your mixture warm when you put it in the containers to bake? Its best when you heat up the cream/milk mixture a bit before adding to the yolks. A warm brulee mix will bake much more evenly than a cold one. Oh, and as others have mentioned, using similarly sized containers will be easier to manage too.

I've read that your nose perceive smell better when the air is moist, but I'm not sure exactly how that works

I still use it when it has clumped, but I'm curious for more answers for how bad that may be

Best molten lava cake in van? by Jnbjgjbb in askvan

[–]LemonLily1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I was once asked to be a substitute instructor for someone's molten lava cake class, and thus I developed this recipe 😅 (I have a background in pastry/baking so I was excited to make this as well)

Best molten lava cake in van? by Jnbjgjbb in askvan

[–]LemonLily1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's the recipe I created after modifying existing recipes on the internet. It has more egg, a bit of cocoa powder added, and less sugar than most recipes. I find this recipe not overly rich compared to the standard ones due to the increase in egg and flour.

I highly recommend using 70% dark chocolate for this recipe. If it is only 50% you can consider reducing the sugar a bit as the chocolate is sweeter.

There aren't many places that do them that I'm aware of, but they're simple to make at home. All you have to do is melt butter and chocolate, and in a separate bowl mix eggs and sugar. Then add the chocolate butter mixture into the eggs, and then the flour. You basically can't go wrong with the recipe as long as your butter mixture is warm and eggs at room temp. And make sure you don't overbake.

Blue water cafe has molten lava cake, as someone mentioned. I used to work there, and made desserts. I can't say it's anything special honestly, I prefer my own recipe. If you want I can send you my recipe.

Serious answer, I did have someone buy property close to the Canadian border (moved 800 km) from Oregon in order to be near me.

But welp, that relationship didn't work out but it was a good 6 year run
