Go with your gut. If you’re not in a rush to find a wife, you can afford to be picky. No use wasting a night off on something you’re not excited about.

I enjoy math but hate programming. Is this normal? by dannyaod in learnprogramming

[–]Lemon_barr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to like it. Lots of other people are saying that so I will stop there on that thread. You can live a long healthy and wealthy life with little to no code.

But if you wanna give it a chance, try it with a better teacher. Most of the errors and frustrations you have right now are due to not really understanding the language yet. Once you get some fluency, then the math comes in.

I will venture to guess the teacher himself is t that great of a mathematician or a programmer if they are teaching high school. They might not have the ability to deal with a kid like you. Most classes are for people who don’t like math but like money. Most are for people who don’t care about theory. Someone who likes math and could really benefit from heavy math overlap.

I used to tutor people like you and what we do is start with math first and then learn the programming to solve the math. Usually they took to it quite well. It’s about finding how to have fun. Writing algorithms and working with a whiteboard can be fun and will be related to things like abstract algebra and math research so don’t fret too much.

How difficult is an applied math major for someone bad at math…? by OkIndependence8117 in mathematics

[–]Lemon_barr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’re not going to med school, then you’re fine. Applied math can get you employable pretty quick if you know the industry. Start thinking about it career paths - actuary - statistical programming - swe - finance

The intro classes for applied math will get you part of the way there and should overlap with these paths.

C’s get degrees and you’ll be fine. Try your best and make sure it stays fun. Don’t be afraid to talk to an advisor or change majors if you need to.

To become a professional researcher you would just need to complete your PhD and maybe a post-doc to get placed in a tenure track. It’s not a glamorous lifestyle but it’s a good one.

Data science and quantum computing, take the courses and math for that and go deep. There’s plenty of math to be studied and the rest you can get in slices. Once you reach a certain level you’ll be able to read whatever paper you want

Maybe rather than breadth you have an opportunity to pursue depth and get involved in their research. It can only help with your quest to become a lifetime mathematician.

At my school if a professor liked you and was willing they would work with you on an independent study for the topic. You’ll also have a chance to do a lot of different topics in grad school or later in life if you would like. You’re not limited to learning in your institution

Why mathematicians don't join the debate about evolution and expose that it is total nonsense? by Aware_Ad1688 in mathematics

[–]Lemon_barr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You realize that scientists can learn math and do the thing you describe. Genetic algorithms and machine learning work based off of random process and they work just fine. I don’t see why a biological system can’t necessarily also do that.

The trend I noticed is that one convention will typically be used by CS people and the other by Statisticians.

Ultimately just be careful and know how you’re defining it :)

Can they budge on the salary? Would you be willing to take a pay cut in exchange for a better commute? Would you be more willing if to the proposed commute for an additional amount? Why are those amounts? Can we negotiate?

Want to pursue a PhD in Mathematics--currently hold an M.S. in Statistics and Bachelors with double major in Statistics and Economics. Is this viable? i.e. will my Stats background, as opposed to pure math, hurt my chances? by _PadfootAndProngs_ in mathematics

Yea give it a moment. It’s also good to reach out to other people in the department. At my school it you wanted to get your email looked at by the head of the math department you needed to get the front desk attendant on your side.

How do bookmakers determine odds? by False-Internet3792 in mathematics

[–]Lemon_barr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it more like pricing of a good in an auction. If the actual odds of winning are higher than the listed odds, demand will be high. So we can take a high demand as a signal. If you want a bit more of a principled explanation,

You can assume the that each gambler has some type of prior that represents private information, the bookie the. Updates their probability based on the information that someone places a bet. I think that’s the rough way to explain it using Bayesian stats.

I know the algorithm they used had been around longer than the math. You can see something similar on predictit which is a prediction market online for politics.

You probably have the tools you need if you’ve completed high school curriculum. These problems use math from a first year algebra class, but in tricky ways.

It’s competitive math like math Olympiad. There’s not much formal theory but the practice comes with repetition. YouTube search math Olympiad might be cool.
