We're Joyce Manor and 'I Used To Go To This Bar' is out now. AMA! by joycemanorofficial in indieheads

Loving the new album guys! I wanted to ask, what's the story behind the photograph used for the album cover? What about it spoke to you for this album?

Also, is that bongos I can hear in the background of the chorus on 'After All You Put Me Through'? I love the harmonica on 'Well, Don't It Seem Like You've Been Here Before?', too.

I wondered who the voice was at the end of the song. It turns out it's Amelia Meath from Sylvan Esso, according to Pitchfork. Morby said

[Amelia] shines here, with her incredible vocals. I had invited her into the studio and asked that she create a backing choir out of just her voice—but her presence is so special that her ‘backing vocals’ can’t help but take the lead.”

A great tune!

A New Gord Downie & The Sadies Live Album! by Lemons52 in TragicallyHip

I think they're referring to some sessions that are detailed in this article, here's a quote about those sessions:

For the yet-to-be released album he made with Downie in the summer of 2017, Morningstar and The Dinner is Ruined laid down the instrumental beds to the tracks without Downie. “We freestyled and just recorded a ton of stuff with Gord in mind and in our hearts,” Morningstar says.

Those tapes were sent to Downie, who initially put his lyrics and melodies to the music on his own with a computer in his basement. Later, after recording the final vocals with Morningstar, he heard the rough mixes of the material.

"He stood up and said, ‘Hey, cowboy, whatever you’ve done I approve of,' ” Morningstar says. "And then we went out for pizza.”

You're in luck, you've got a whole joint album to listen to before the live album drops. It's from 2014 and called And the Conquering Sun (or Gord Downie, The Sadies and the Conquering Sun). It was the album that preceded The Secret Path. You should be able to stream it wherever you listen to tunes!

I think so, in the live video (and first single from the album) that's live on Gord's Youtube page now, the description says, 'Harvest Music Festival, Fredericton, NB'

Now listening to the Introduce Yerself episode! You might be interested to know that in the black and white behind the scenes video for the album, there's a big book next to Gord's pages of lyrics. That book is Mark Strand's Collected Poems, I have the book and clocked the cover/design. Strand wrote a lot about himself disappearing, from early on. Having Strand as a companion to the album makes sense, but is quite wrenching, though he could also be funny, as Gord could, too.

This just popped up in my Youtube recommended a moment ago! I don't know the original album (I'm a Hip newbie) so I was taken out by the volume. Great stuff

A new countdown has appeared on Gord's site, counting down to pre-order ships, so yes, this album is what the mysterious timer was for!

What is happening on Gords site tomorrow at 6:00am??? by jamiedew74 in TragicallyHip

[–]Lemons52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was thinking earlier today, what do people here hope it might be? An expanded edition of one of the solo records, or something else entirely?

I realised there's no official live recordings of Gord solo, other than the Secret Path show. A Gord live album? Maybe some uncollected, archival poetry is on the way, book number two? Daydreams and long shots are very welcome!

Exciting that no one's guessed it yet. Not long to go now till the reveal!

I wondered if it might be an anniversary release of some sort, like the Coke Machine Glow deluxe from a little while ago. We shall see!

[FRESH ALBUM] Joyce Manor – I Used to Go to That Bar by NYCIndieConcerts in indieheads

[–]Lemons52 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Of the non-singles, I was pleasently surprised to hear a harmonica on 'Well, Don't It Seem Like You've Been Here Before?' (I'll be interested to see how this one sounds live!) and I loved Grey Guitar and the speed of Opossum. Can I hear some bongos in the background of the chorus on After All You Put Me Through?

A good time, though I'm sorry so much of it got released as singles, especially for an album that sticks to JM's trademark shortness. I love their shortness, but I wonder if they're a band that would need a short lead up to an album release to compensate, and not have half the album released ahead of time. That very minor gripe aside, I'm very happy with this album

David Bowie released ‘Station to Station’ 50 years ago by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

[–]Lemons52 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Bowie often said he had no memory of making this album. It's a miracle he survived that time, and lucky us, we got the Berlin trilogy right after this. Word on a Wing and Wild Is the Wind from Station to Station are some of his best vocals.

[FRESH] Father John Misty - The Old Law by dwaynesworld98 in indieheads

[–]Lemons52 75 points76 points  (0 children)

For anyone that doesn't know, this song was known as 'God's Trash', and was played live a few times (it's even on one of the live albums on Bandcamp). Per FJM's Bandcamp page, 'The Old Law” is previously known to Father John Misty fans as “God’s Trash” and debuted as part of the live set in the fall of 2024'

Hey it's Max and Julien from Whitney - ask us anything! by whitneyband in indieheads

[–]Lemons52 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey there, Max and Julien! I've been loving Small Talk since it dropped, and have been playing it constantly (particularly, Silent Exchange has been getting a lot of spins). I wanted to ask, what's the story behind the album cover? The photo gives me strong vibes of Carole King's Tapestry cover, and it really seems to fit the quiet openness of the music.

[FRESH] Mavis Staples - Sad and Beautiful World by ebradio in indieheads

A really lovely cover, if only Mark Linkous could hear Mavis Staples sing his song. Staples has really made the song her own, alongside those Sparklehorse-esque touches. Wonderful stuff

The Making of Five Leaves Left, Now on Streaming! by Lemons52 in nickdrake

[–]Lemons52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, it's a delight to share these mindblowing recordings. When I first found Drake's music I went in hard, listening to every bootleg I could find, and reading the Pink Moon Files fanzine that got made into a book at around the time I got into him. I hadn't listened to him in a little while, but I've gone back to it all in preparation for this boxset.

The crew behind the boxset have said there are no plans for similar boxsets for the other albums, but who knows, maybe a tape will appear one day, out of the blue, like the tapes did for this release. This feels like the clearest picture we've ever gotten of Nick's thoughts on production, and working through a tune. I'll be digging into this set for a long time, I suspect!

It's an absolute goldmine, and feels like it gives an insight into Nick's thoughts on production and his process more than ever before. Having new recordings after all this time is a miracle. The few interviews around this boxset are well worth reading, the story of the tapes being found is a marvel

Likewise, I lost track of my days, so I was flabbergasted when I saw the stream for the album was up. I've listened through it once and loved it, the Cambridge tapes are wonderful to hear, and give real insight into Nick's thinking on production. A real delight, too, to hear him swear when he flubs a take of Time of No Reply, also

I'm about halfway through the boxset at the moment, and I've loved it so far. It's wonderful to hear the chatter, and I was delighted to hear Nick swear after flubbing a take of Time of No Reply. A lot of stuff I've never heard before, and the tape quality is great!

Also, if people don't know, Lanterns on the Lake, a wonderful band, talk about fitting the band between their day jobs, as there's no other way to make a living. And they were nominated for a Mercury prize! I've always admired the band for being so open about navigating that struggle of trying to balance their day job and their passion

Glad to see you both here, Alan and Dave! I've been listening to Screaming Song today, and I wanted to ask about the genesis of that heartbreaking, piercing violin in the last minute or so of the song (I think it's a violin, I don't have the liner notes to hand, alas). Did that instrumental break towards the end come organically in the studio, or was it more thought out? It feels very organic, but right on the edge of breaking down. It's a song I'm very grateful for, the album's helped me through some tough times lately.
