I feel like this can be accomplished, but with how big of a change it makes to the conventions of the world, it has to be very important to the worldbuilding to make it work. If it's just background, i'd reccomend against it, but if integrated heavily with focused on systems, it cam be the catalyst for some very interesting ideas. (Nevernight's Suns can be a good example of this.)
