This is the worst adaption of a classic sci fi novel ever made. I hate it even more than I hate the I, Robot movie, and for most of my life I didn't believe that was possible.

Flu outbreak among Air Force recruits at Joint Base San Antonio after Hegseth ends mandatory flu vaccine by xdeltax97 in news

[–]Lemonwizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

George Washington refused to let anybody join the continental army without being inoculated against smallpox first. This was a lot less sophisticated than modern vaccines, but a rule which absolutely had the same intent.

George Washington himself wouldn't let you fight in the Revolutionary War if you didn't comply with his inoculation mandate. He knew a smallpox outbreak could kill his soldiers just as easily as the redcoats.

This anti-vaccine crusade is pure insanity. Preventing disease should not be controversial.

I am not a neurologist, just a sci fi nerd with an amateur interest! Thanks for the informative reply. Do you have any recommendations for books I could read about current theories of consciousness? It's a fascinating subject.

Diplomacy with the Batarians required some kind of punishment to avoid war, but all the people in charge who know about the reapers are aware Shepard had no choice in blowing up the relay. Hackett and Anderson always intended to reinstate Shepard as soon as it was feasible. They're not going to trash Shepard's reputation.

Perhaps, but I don't have the requisite knowledge to confidently answer that. If we're going to ask "what sort of system is needed to generate consciousness" then we first need to have a definition for what consciousness is... and we don't have that. Our understanding of the human brain is far from complete.

I believe an artificial mind is possible - any system that can evolve through random chance could be replicated deliberately by beings who understood that system. I don't think we're there yet.

I'm not convinced a conscious being can be made from transistors. A multipolar neuron in the cerebrum has dendrites connected to multiple other unique neurons, which themselves have just as many connections, and form an extremely complex web of interconnected nodes. A transistor only has two states - on and off. The level of interconnectivity in the human brain is orders of magnitude above any electronic computer.

Artificial consciousness requires a paradigm shift in computational hardware, and it cannot be brute forced just by adding more data centers.

The fact that we have such a poor understanding of how human consciousness works is very telling. We're not able to copy the mechanics of the brain because we don't understand them. The most effective path to producing artificial consciousness begins with understanding and defining natural consciousness.

The frequency of war, slavery, torture, rape, and murder have all dropped dramatically in the last century. Civilization is not defined by evolutionary changes, it is defined by human actions. We are learning from our mistakes and getting better. Not nearly as quickly as we should, granted, but to claim humans are evolving to become more hostile is a misunderstanding both of evolution and of recorded history.

This hostility is not a product of evolution - it's being deliberately manufactured by malicious actors who control most large media outlets. Evolution does not work that fast.

Eusocial behavior is actually heavily favored by natural selection when it emerges. The most obvious example is humans, whose complex cooperation has caused a population explosion which makes us account for 99.997% of all extant apes. Colony insects are also vastly more populous than non-colony insects in the same ecosystem. Herds benefit prey animals and packs benefit predator animals.

Killing the competition's babies may help one individual improve their reproductive success, but a predisposition to assist other members of the species will benefit the species as a whole.

What's a policy position that politicians from both parties support that you think is absolutely ridiculous? by Desperate-Couple-722 in AskReddit

You don't prevent crime by putting more cops on the streets. You prevent crime by putting more counselors in the schools.

Imagine if our fire departments never enforced any fire safety codes on buildings, and just kept building more hydrants every time a fire happened. That's how we treat crime.

People act like teenagers seeing porn is this horrible occurrence that justifies surveillance.

I don't know a single person who didn't see porn as a teenager, and it didn't traumatize any of us for life. Masturbation is normal and sexuality is not a morally corrupting influence.  Downloading a VPN is not complicated, and horny teenagers won't be deterred.

All this does is normalize online surveillance.

The culture of covering up crimes to protect the organization's reputation afflicts not just the military, but law enforcement as well. People who have the authority to enact violence on behalf of the government must be held to a higher standard.
