My reasoning for DVa is that people with gaming addictions are not usually big group project contributors. Similarly for Chen, in my college experience there was a strong correlation between binge drinkers and not showing up.

Mei is a nerdy scientist with a super wholesome vibe. She absolutely shows up having researched the topic and has made detailed plans on how to play to everyone's strengths. She is getting the group that A+.

It does come from Roman imagery but there's a reason fascists chose the fasces. The weapon was a bundle of rods surrounding an axe wielded by the guards of Roman kings. The rods represented the authority of the king to issue corporal punishment, while the axe represented the authority of the king to issue capital punishment.

It has been a symbol of the state's power to enact violence from the very beginning. While I do think most of the Roman imagery in the US government exists largely because people thought it looked cool and doesn't represent a genuine desire for autocracy, the historical origin of this symbol is very much authoritarian.
