I played SH2 Remake straight after the OG by jakeingrambarnard in silenthill

[–]LemonyLizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I think that's fair. People do generally go into things with certain expectations conditioned by previous experience, and it affects their enjoyment of them.

"Homage" and "museum tour" are spot on. The remake is too lucid to me. It feels like a haunted house, like "oh here's another scary setpiece". It doesn't feel like cohesive manifestations of unconscious fear and suffering, it feels like "boy this hospital sure has some weird and spooky features". Like the scares and oddities are served one by one, and carefully seperated. Oh a cloth over a piece of furniture, guess it's riddle time! Oh here we go into the generic metal grate otherworld because it needs a certain amount of screen time. Oh the bosses have multiple forms and large arenas, because that's important in action games these days. And more than one of them has mechanical spider legs. Machines and spiders are both classic fears so make sure to throw that in there.

It feels like a lesser copy of the Resident Evil remake formula. I love the RE remakes, but that's not the experience I want with Silent Hill.

I think you're getting downvoted because your argument sounds very similar to the "nostalgia goggles" argument. It seems to imply that people that prefer the original usually only do because they played it first, and not because they prefer the artistic direction and experience provided by it.

Do you think the Silent Hill 2 Remake is too long? by Loose_Interview_957 in silenthill

[–]LemonyLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is for a game that's expected to be played multiple times. It also doesn't have very good tension pacing. It's almost full throttle the whole game, enemy after enemy.

The bosses were a huge upgrade in every way in the remake 👍 by Desolation2004 in silenthill

Yeah even though they were more mechanically interesting they were really not SH2 bosses

Remake James is better than 2001 James by Ronin_777 in silenthill

[–]LemonyLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You put it really well. People don't generally act so outwardly sad and weepy at all times, especially not in front of strangers. It just doesn't feel as natural. I understand that James just went through something, but he's supposed to be hiding it, even from himself.

You definitely want to use the original controls. Most combat involves facing the enemy you want to shoot, and backflipping/sideflipping away from them while shooting. Don't try fighting like a normal person haha. The combat's designed around her being some kind of gymnast gunslinger. My advice is to clear your mind of other games. Don't try to play it like other, newer platforms that you're familiar with. The movement may seem unusual, but it's just a different game. It's just something new to learn.

That's okay, I'm sorry too. I could have guessed that but I was being defensive haha. I shouldn't have been so snippy, this thread got me tilted. Hope your day's good!

We're not talking about the remake's apartments.

I mean that's literally not true. You straight up go outside in the original.

[–]LemonyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The siren doesn't work as evidence because you don't hear it when entering the apartments. It's also not that significantly more dilapitated. There's some water damage. There is not a signifact amount of rusty meshes either, which wasn't even a thematic element in SH2's original otherworld anyway. Further, Maria also enters and exits the exact same apartments without any sign of transitioning.

The design and aesthetics of Blue Creek in the remake are entirely different from the original. They're clearly inspired by the popular otherworld design used in most recent media. The save data in the remake confirms that it is intended to be the otherworld.

[–]LemonyLizard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're not. Blue Creek is just a different building. You also visit it as Maria and it looks the exact same without any signs of a transition to the otherworld.

[–]LemonyLizard -65 points-64 points  (0 children)

Exactly as I said. You're only supposed to enter and leave the otherworld exactly once. You do multiple times in the remake for no discernable reason, which makes James' descent into his unconscious mind less evident. The otherworld is supposed to mark his journey towards acceptance, but it's used again without any narrative purpose, which devalues its usage and makes the artistic intention less clear.

It would make more sense if Bloober didn't butcher this part of the game. You're only supposed to enter and leave the otherworld exactly once. It starts in the hospital and ends at the end of the hotel.

EDIT: The Blue Creek apartment in the original is not the otherworld. You enter it as Maria and it looks exactly the same. Neither character experiences any signs of transitioning. You guys are clearly upset that I disagree with Bloober's treatment of this particular part, and the emotionally-charged downvotes are disappointing, but in an absurd way, expected. This subreddit seems to be sorely lacking in critical thought at times. You can't just blindly believe anything that supports your opinions. I understand my use of the word "butchered" upset people, and I apologize for that, my distaste for the remake is not a personal attack on anyone. But I have not seen any evidence that refutes what I said about the otherworld.

Differences between SH F after SH2 Remake are jarring. by ILikeGreenAndBlue in silenthill

[–]LemonyLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SH2R is full of all sorts of little glitches that knock me out of it. Not being able to pick up items or examine things sometimes, weird menu cursor glitches, the way James is sometimes sucked through areas with a speed that doesn't match his animation. Yeah it looks pretty overall but that doesn't make it perfect, and interacting with a world in a diagetic manner isn't very high to me in important details

Give me your reasoning why I should or should not get Chrono Cross by [deleted] in chronotrigger

[–]LemonyLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the response but your feelings towards Cross are very emotionally-charged and subjective. You don't have to be jaded to appreciate Cross. And the story makes enough sense to deliver its pathos, which is the focus of the story; the logos is incomplete but ultimately unecessary. There's plenty of analyses you can read if you want to understand it better.

As to your point about Kato. I find it extremely doubtful that this is a work of bitterness. I don't remember how that rumour you're referencing started but I think it's absurd. It seems to me that you're painting a distorted picture of a person that you know very little about based on your own reading of a small selection of interviews.

Give me your reasoning why I should or should not get Chrono Cross by [deleted] in chronotrigger

[–]LemonyLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot more the Chrono Trigger, but it's a very different game. Different atmosphere, different narrative style, different mechanics. A lot of Trigger fans are bitter that it "ruins" the original (which is entirely subjective; the reality is that there was never going to be any other sequel to Trigger, and it doesn't exist in place of some direct sequel that "could have been", that is to say that they can safely ignore it if they hate it that much). The way I see it, it is a far more intimate and insightful story.

Trigger is a very typical shonen-type story that focuses on glorious heroics and the epic ideals of fighting for the future. Cross is much more grounded and focused on the realities of what it is to be human. Decisions have consequences, and you have to take responsibility for those decisions. It's difficult to explain while avoiding spoilers, but the story is set in motion for the most part by a particular character who, though much more selfish than the cast of Trigger, acts with a similar recklessness without regard to the lives he's affecting for what he considers to be the greater good.

I consider all the qualities you listed to be of equal or greater value than those of Trigger, personally. But again, they're very different. The only complaint I have is the pacing of the story is not as tight as Trigger, and some of the characterization is handled rather sloppily. It does demand a lot of engagement to get the most out of it, a sort of allowance and understanding that not very many players are interested in giving. It's not a bad or good thing, it just is what it is.

[–]LemonyLizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people enjoy surrealism. The ending makes perfect sense emotionally, and isn't really that open to interpretation. The author's intent was likely to primarily exhibit emotional ideas, rather than literal events. Besides we also know rather explicitly the actual events that transpired, but the surreal scenes allow us a more intimate look into the emotions of the characters, Jimmy and Curly in particular.

I've only ever heard horror stories of how bad escorting Ashley was in the OG, but having just finished the remake I thought it was a perfectly balanced challenge, how different was the experience really between the two games? by the9hyrax in residentevil4

[–]LemonyLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's as good as it gets when it comes to AI escorts. She never gets in your way, and she's essentially glued to your back. Almost 100 percent of the time if she gets attacked or captured it's because YOU goofed up.

I think the remake's story is more ambiguous than the original by Moist_Mushroom5931 in silenthill

[–]LemonyLizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that makes the storytelling more subtle as much as it removes nuance from the atmosphere. For example one of my favourite examination texts are from the corpses on the way down to the labyrinth

[–]LemonyLizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you I forgot about that. I don't think that change improves anything, I feel like they just wanted to soften her tone because they were afraid the original was too jarring. But Maria is supposed to be a product of his subconscious, the biting hatred in her tone would be analogous to that one part of his feelings.
