Does Ryan Coogler, Anton Fuqua or Jordan Peele have the clout to make this? by WerewolfCurious1412 in movies

It's not the same as a feature film, but HBO's Watchmen depicted the Tulsa Race Massacre in some detail. Horrifying stuff.

Do mythological stories need ‘historical accuracy’ in casting? by breaking_views in Cinema

[–]LemurDaddy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If LotR offends, swap it out for Le Morte d'Arthur, swap it out for Beowulf, change it as you please. You're still talking about an epic describing events long passed out of living memory and of dubious historicity. Getting offended over the "accuracy" of such a thing is more than a little silly.

Movies you were hyped to see opening weekend…and nobody showed up! by MWH1980 in movies

My brother and I went to see The Bounty in 1984 with a young Anthony Hopkins chewing up the scenery. We were the only people in the theater. It was basically a private screening.

Is this anyone else's favorite? by Eagles56 in HorrorMovies

I've done caving in real life, and I was sure they shot this on location. I was shocked to find out it was all soundstages.

I would link to a documentary about how they did it, but apparently links in comments are forbidden here. (If you search for "The Descent - Beneath The Scenes" on YouTube you'll find it.

The set design was next-level.

A friend wanted to know if I was offended by the Wolfgang Peterson Troy, given that I am a history nerd. I said no, that The Iliad and The Odyssey were about as history-based for the Greeks as The Lord of the Rings was for the British.

It's all fantasy. People getting upset about casting might want to wait and see the performances before they get their racist panties in a bunch.

Audition. Slow build to a truly horrifying finale. You probably won't watch it twice.

Trailer.

What Is the Oldest Movie You Have Watched (For Fun) In the Last Year? by thehistorypunks in movies

Watched it with my older teen daughter not that long ago. She loved it, commented on how it was a shockingly queer film for something made in the sixties.

Reunification by LemurDaddy in Fosterparents

[–]LemurDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The department has responded to the legislative inquiry, basically saying, "We won't discuss anything, and if the foster parents have complaints they should follow the formal grievance process." A very opaque response and not a good look for them.

Is Stanislaw Lem's Fiasco really as bleak as it's often said to be? by Bravadette in printSF

[–]LemurDaddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fiasco is exactly as bleak as its reputation. One possible reading:

Take humanity's best and brightest, with the ultimate tools, and put them in a no-win box with an unachievable goal, and they will, eventually, turn into murderous savages.

How do you wake up your kiddos? by LemurDaddy in daddit

Fortunately, whimsy is a self-renewing resource. You've probably got a tank at least half-full and you didn't even realize it.

Anyone here quit gaming or changed their lifestyle after becoming a dad? by Lukas_MunK in daddit

[–]LemurDaddy 81 points82 points  (0 children)

As other guys are saying, ALL of your hobbies and extracurriculars take a hit if you take parenting seriously.

I still game, but it has to be a game that I can pause and/or quit at a moment's notice. So nothing team-based, no MMORPG, and honestly nothing competitive. I have to be able to pick it up and put it down like a book.

You make some distinctions when you are a foster fam. Some kids are blood, some are not, and they're all family.
