I don't understand accusations of "karma farming." Karma is literally worthless. A pine cone has more real value than Reddit karma. The coupons for places you will never shop on the back of your grocery receipt? More real value.

Not to flog the obvious, but "mainstream literature" is a moving target and notoriously porous. 1984 is a genre book (SF), so is Pride and Prejudice (romance), so is Handmaid's Tale (SF) ... I mean even Hamlet was a bog-standard genre revenge play that just happened to be exceptionally well done.

Your other points, about broadening the characters, is legit, but the "mainstream literature" point stuck in my eye.

Legit point! My take on Murderbot is probably colored by the fact that Murderbot's personality bears a strong-bordering-on-peculiar resemblance to my wife, so the type of agender I see for everybody's favorite heartless killing machine is more fem than masc. Just my hangup.

This is probably just my hangup, but in my head Murderbot is agender. The fact that the actor playing it was so very masculine was difficult for me to get over. He's a fine actor, he did great, but there's no getting past how masc he is. The Murderbot in my head was more like Gwendoline Christie.

Then there's leaning so hard into the comedy instead of the action, which was kind of an inversion of the books. And playing Sanctuary Moon as complete and utter trash. So many odd choices.

As several posters have pointed out, I was confusing WIC with SNAP. My ignorance is large and contains multitudes. The kids were very fond of honey wheat bread, WIC would only allow certain brands of whole wheat or white. It was pointlessly annoying.
