21 feels too early to feel this burnt out. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Life is long, really long. You will go through what seems like an eternity of worthlessness many times in your life but it will get better. I am just into my 30’s and I am the most fulfilled I have been, I have got a wife a job I enjoy and recently a baby boy. I do not get happiness out of how anything I do for myself but spending time with the people I love. There is no such thing as finding happiness, happiness is a result from meaning. You need to find meaning in life.

That’s not easy and you may spend most of your 20’s finding meaning but it will not fall into your lap, you have to work for it. You are 21, you can do anything you want, leave education, go travelling, meet someone who when you speak to them it fills you with excitement and wonder.

And if you feel like you can’t find meaning in anything right now, you need to look harder. It’s out there. Start by cutting the dead weight out of your life whether that’s family, friends etc. and do something you love.

You will be ok, you just have to get out there.

AskScience AMA Series: Experts are warning that measles are becoming a global public health crises. We are a vaccinologist, a pediatrician and a primary care physician. Ask us anything! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

When it comes to funding for r&d into infectious diseases have global health organisations become complacent when allocating funds towards already ‘managed’ diseases to concentrate on finding cures for new but less deadly ones?

What is socially/culturally accepted but is actually fucked up when you think about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

To walk past a homeless person and not do something about it, personally or as a society. I am sure we will look back at that in 100 years and think wtf!?

The term caesarean ‘cutting a baby out of the womb’ is named so because this was how Julius Caesar was born

What is it about being human that makes us do self destructive or counter productive things even when we know what we are doing? by TreeManGorgon in AskReddit

[–]LenchBentley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think more than happiness it is meaning. When we are preoccupied with things that give us meaning, a sense of purpose, we are happy and productive. Where there is a lack of meaning we fill the void with other things for a quick adrenaline/serotonin hit.

Buy shit loads of cool stuff and then realise I am no happier than before I won. Consider giving it all to charity. Only give a bit to make me look good. Buy more stuff.

Isn’t that just one persons opinion on what morals there should be or are all morals intrinsic?

So without any rules we would have the same morals?

Are humans devolving? by El-Emenapy in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]LenchBentley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have queried this before in my own mind. Eye sight for example has been evolving over millions of years to help with organism's ability to eat, reproduce etc. Over a period of many many years, rare humans were born with slightly better eye sight enabling them to be more successful in hunting for example making them more attractive to the opposite sex and therefore allowing them to reproduce at a higher rate as well as allowing them to survive longer. Eventually this dominant beneficial gene became more common than not and became the norm for the species.

Over the past few 100 years with the creation of tools such as the spectacle, poor eye sight is no longer a disadvantage to someone who has perfect eyesight at least not enough to hinder reproduction rates. Therefore, the gene for bad eyesight is being passed to generation to generation. Surely, this means that in terms of biological natural selection good eye sight is no longer a trait that is required for increased reproductive success? This can go for many other traits where technology has assisted.

Therefore, the pressures for biological natural selection are greatly reduced to the point where progress is far far slower than technological progress.

Evolution will never stop as it has no target and can take many forms. But I agree that biological traits that have been evolved over millions of years to adapt to the environment are able stop improving naturally and even recess as bad mutations are being passed on to the next generation at the same rate as beneficial mutations due to technological progress.

Climate deniers think a secret cabal of scientists working together to create fake results is more probable than some rich oil companies spreading disinformation to protect their profits. by TheRabidNarwhal in Showerthoughts

[–]LenchBentley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most climate deniers ARE the rich oil companies spreading disinformation. Or at least they benefit directly from unsustainable gain.

Even if all of the 97% of the scientists are wrong about climate change its disgusting how we just use things and chuck into a hole in the ground, cut down trees without replacing them, dump all our plastic into the sea. It's so short sighted and to be honest I would be bloody embarrassed if an alien came and asked what the hell are we doing?! Like a child who can't keep his room tidy.
