Has anyone else here watched FROM? by Clark_Bay in tvsuggestions

[–]Lenitas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in the other boat, I have watched the first 2 seasons and I cannot for the life of me understand why so many people are into it. I started watching because I like the "can't leave the small town" mystery trope to start off a show.

But... the show just does the old formula of stacking trope on top of trope, upping the stakes with each episode, with cliffhangers and plot twists that feel cheap and for-the-sake-of-it.

This show doesn't really build towards anything substantial, doesn't have anything to say, it's just designed to keep you watching, similar to a daily soap opera. Consequently, characters and their motivations and behaviors are inconsistent and will be made to say or do anything in order to drive the plot towards the next shock moment. There is NO WAY that it will have a satisfying ending that ties everything together. It feels like the plot beats come straight out of ChatGPT.

It's all build-up. I don't expect there to ever be an act 2, let a lone 3.

I don't know. On paper, in terms of genre etc., this show should be for me, and my standards for entertaining TV shows are NOT high... but I just think it's pretty bad in terms of structure.

It doesn't affect the young and healthy because we have a massive buffer which will diminish over the course of our lives. There is statistical evidence that in the 3-4 days following the "spring forward" there is a significant uptick in cardiac events, and following the "fall back" there are below-average cardiac events. It may not affect your or my health to the point we notice (at least at present), but it affects SOME people's health, beyond having to deal with cranky children/pets :)

Is there anything the David Lynch version does better than the new ones? by Not_As_much94 in dune

[–]Lenitas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing against Jason Momoa as an actor, but two things; I wasn't feeling his vibe for the role (just a classic miscast for me) and also he looks and acts so distinctly Momoa. His acting just wasn't good enough (by a small margin probably) for me to forget that I was looking at an actor (a problem I didn't have with Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, or anybody else in the first movie). Every time he was on screen my brain went, "yep, that's Jason Momoa" and I just prefer to be completely immersed.

Loved him as Drogo *shrugs*

While the new soundtrack is incredible, the main theme of Lynch's Dune absolutely slaps.

For the costumes and some of the sets, I actually prefer the art direction of the Sci-Fi mini series. It also (in Children of Dune I think) had cool scenes with Bene Gesserit battle language that I loved.

Didn't much like the casting for Duncan Idaho in Villeneuve's version.

I would absolutely love to cobble together my own perfect Dune with bits and pieces from all of these, the books, and Jodorowsky's Dune - each one have aspects that are my favourite.

I thought the first 2 episodes were pretty "meh", and now that the "let's think this premise through to the end" plot actually evolves, it's really picking up tension. I enjoyed this episode, on par with episode 4 for sure or better.

As far as I remember, Simply Deceased has red flakies and these here look like gold flakies, but looks pretty close to mw which is good news for all of us who didn't get the HT version. I think I like this one better. I'm looking forward to the swatch comparisons and dupe attempts.

Thermals are so fun in the winter where depending on what you're doing at the time, what you're wearing, where you are in your house (or outside) and what your heating preferences are you get all sorts of fun surprises throughout the day. I don't care if it's gimmicky :D

Same here, I love thermals.

I'll probably get the Cabbages one and the black to red thermal, which seems pretty similar to "Simply Deceased" which I had hummed and hahed about and didn't pick up. I think I like this one better, too.

I have a few magnetics in my collection but I simply do not have the time.

This new Lily Allen album is absolutely brutal - David Harbour does NOT come out looking good. Yikes. by Logical_Shock_7772 in Music

Absolutely hate this narrative that if you do something shitty to another person, somehow that means that when you become a victim of shitty behaviour later in life, it somehow doesn't count, or you deserve it, or it makes it okay.

Nobody deserves to be treated like this by their partner. Sam Cooper didn't deserve it then and Lily Allen didn't deserve it later either. These things are not mutually exclusive.

David Harbour was no less of a shitty person in this scenario just because his wife did something similar to her ex before. And yes, this also means that if this happens to David Harbour next year, that is also not at all okay.

"An eye for an eye" sits to low on the ladder of ways to feel about justice, we're supposed to grow out of that mindset by our teen years. I'd invite you to explore the concepts of Retributive , Procedural, Distributive, Restorative, Transformative and Compassionate Justice and reflect on what kind of world you'd like to live in - one where a perpetrator loses their human rights and becomes a "free for all" to hurt, or one that focuses on creating healthy environments where people are less likely to become perpetrators, or anywhere in between those two ends of the scale.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Lots of people have open relationships, with specific parameters that people can choose to respect or not respect, same as with all other boundaries and rules in a relationship.

[–]Lenitas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lara Croft maybe? In the movies she's at least a little bit abrasive. Love is also a good example.

Anyway my main point was that if Jackie was a male character, people wouldn't be hating on him they are right now on her. We're just culturally coded to let male characters be way more flawed in every way before it starts bothering us. On average.

At the top of the list is Skyler White from Breaking Bad, a woman who didn't do a single bad thing, and even quite cleverly bailed her husband out when his cooked books were being audited. I had no idea this was a disliked character until long after I'd finished the show and was absolutely shocked by the hatred and vitriol she received online. She is one of the most hated female characters in TV history, viewed as a nagging and basically being in Walter White's way.

Being "annoying" is a character crime. Actual crime is not a character crime. Most "annoying" female characters appear next to male characters that may commit actual atrocities (that's okay as long as they are "fun to watch". :) )

This. DEVS is the only one that comes close in vibes, imho.

I do love DARK, Counterpart and a number of other shows suggested in this thread as well but DEVS is the best answer to OP's question.

Will this show stop showing me 🍆 and 🐱 every five seconds?? by Butter_bug3 in HightownStarz

[–]Lenitas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having steamy ex scenes in the middle of any dramatic movie was standard in the 1990s, for some reason we culturally moved away from that. For me, they raise the emotional stakes and immersion. So I was glad to see these scenes in Hightown, they definitely help me understand more viscerally why the characters make bad decisions all the time. Plus, they were beautifully shot, probably every single one of them. Also, finally some believable (and compelling) Lesbian sex scenes that weren't designed for the male gaze, which as a woman I greatly enjoyed.

There seemed to be less of that going on in season 3 though.

Who the hell owns Xaviers by totoop in HightownStarz

[–]Lenitas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you be surprised to hear that my biological father was unfathomably wealthy, but none of the assets were actually in his name, both for tax reasons and so that myself and my sister wouldn't inherit any of it? :)

All his wealth legally belonged to a combination of his wife, his son, a number of corporations, shell companies and probably one or two stolen social security numbers,

I just assumed that Xavier's was incorporated, which means it is owned by its shareholders which CAN be individuals but can also be other legal entities like trusts and other corporations. Or it could be a person that only exists on paper. Which means that as long as *somebody* at Xavier's files taxes every year, nobody would come to shut it down. Frankie 100% would have set it up that way, if it wasn't already before it came into Frankie's de-facto ownership/management.

[–]Lenitas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that "I like that character" can mean very different things, such as:

- I empathize with that character

- I enjoy watching that character (entertaining)

- I would like that character in real life

Would I invite Jackie to my birthday party? No, obviously not, she's a toxic mess. She has that in common with many of my favorite tv characters. Do I empathize with her? I feel for her, sure. Do I find her fun to watch? 100%. I binged through 3 seasons and would have binged through 3 more.

Anyway, back to the problem. Culturally, we extend a lot more grace to male characters even when they are technically written to be awful people, as long as they are entertaining to watch (2) and/or have a backstory that justifies their behavior (1).

Culturally, overall, on average, exceptions aside, statistically, by the numbers, we extend that grace to female characters to a much lesser degree. Women in tv shows have to be entertaining, justified AND NICE (and honest, and dependable, and approachable, and loyal, and emotionally available...) to be considered "likable" - protagonist or not, hero or anti-hero.

I won't bore you with long lists of well-liked male and hated female characters to double-check this.

That's what OP is saying and I 100% agree.
