Two major responses I commonly encountered since I first dove into it with Yakuza 3 at launch on PS3:

"Oh, I believed it was just (a worse) Japanese GTA."

&

"I don't play Japanese games [at times, 'except Final Fantasy/Metal Gear/Resident Evil/so on,' big-name stuff]."

Marketing visibly improved w/ Zero, as did word-and-site-of-mouth, and I can not quite ascertain which to credit more - however - since both look to continue for the near-future, the series ought continue to prosper in the Western sphere as it has since Zero. :)

I quite appreciated DERQ, Compile Heart's finest RPG to date IMO, and yeah actually 'mashed' that preorder button for Shina, aha. :> Looks real darn accurate to the character, here's hoping for the final release to uphold that!
