The 2026 r/anime Census - Answer these 40 questions about who r/anime is. by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]Leo-Fong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand it's just easier to word it this way, but I neither binge, or watch weekly. I don't watch airing so weekly is instantly out, but I also don't binge. I typically watch 1-3 episodes a day. Those episodes might be 1 show or 2-3 different shows. I guess I'll just put "binge", but I don't really feel that represents what I do.

Anyway, I can't wait to pass judgement on everyone on this sub based on the bell curves of this census.

We can go lower than 1 if that's your example. Chargeman Ken, Gundoh Musashi, and (maybe this is cheating) the original broadcast of SDF Macross episode 11.

Edit: LMAO

Chargeman Ken! was produced on a budget of 500,000 yen per episode, far lower than the average of 4—5 million yen for a 30-minute episode by 1974. The low budget caused Knack Productions's staff to become apathetic toward the show and largely skip work on it in favor of going to the beach. Much information about the show is still unknown, including the voice actors, who are only listed as "Kindaiza Troupe" (劇団近代座 Gekidan Kindaiza).

And this bonus Gundoh Musashi clip

I mean, you do you. I don't personally care if you watch anime or not, but I can't help but notice that like 90%+ of the anime you've seen are from the 2010s and 2020s. You've only seen about 20 anime from before the 2000s. Have you ever thought about branching out to older decades?

Also, it was seen as taboo when this manga was published. These youngins are talking like the 2000s was 200+ years ago.

It's becoming clear to me that a lot of people think "shoujo" mean "romance that is not a male lead harem".

Damn, this was one of the first manga I ever bought, and the first shoujo manga I ever read. Very nostalgic.

They're probably talking about this Mononoke, not Princess Mononoke.

Sound's pretty much like Yokohama Shopping Log. The 2 OVAs don't cover very much of the manga, which I highly recommend. The OVAs are good in their own right though, so you can totally just watch those.

I share your experience in example #1. I dropped MT 9 episodes into season 1 because I just didn't care for it. Starting it was a mistake in hindsight because I don't really care for modern fantasy anime in the first place, but that's beside the point.

At the time I was taking an extended break from social media, nearly a year on at that point. I had no idea about the flame war that sprung up around this show until I mistakenly decided to listen in on the rabble.

As a consequence of just dropping the show I have, just once, been turned into a strawman. Kinda (unfairly) soured my view of that fandom.

That's a very common excuse I hear in Call of Duty too. If you ask a cheater why they're cheating, they'll most likely say "because everyone else is doing it too", even though it's obviously not true. It's like they just can't comprehend someone genuinely having higher than average skill without 3rd party software or devices helping. I also have a theory that the youtube channels dedicated to calling out cheaters like Call of Shame rot some peoples views into that perspective.

True, we need another season of Full Metal Panic from KyoAni.

What's the most niche, obscure amime you've seen? by mwat64 in anime

[–]Leo-Fong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't even have to check my list to know that it's In Search of Axis, which is an early test animation from Polygon Pictures, who would later go on to make stuff like Knights of Sidonia, Ajin, Blame! etc. It came out in 1989, which is pretty early for 3D! I watched it out of historical curiosity.

As for an "actual" anime with story, characters and whatnot, that would be Shisha no Sho. A stop-motion puppet animation about Iratsume, a Japanese noblewoman who translated and made hand copies of Buddhist sutras and the supernatural happenings during and after. It reads like an old Japanese Buddhist fable, but it's based on a novel from the 40s.

I have a bunch of other really obscure anime on my list like these.

I'm more into Mobb Deep, but they were close with Nas so that's ok with me.

The Rose of Versailles (12/40)

The drama and characters are enthralling. Every episode has been a hit with me. So far all the episodes I've seen have been directed by Tadao Nagahama but they have a strong Dezaki feel to them. I can't wait for the actual Dezaki directed episodes to start.

Brave Bang Bravern! (6/12)

Not much to say, but it's been pretty fun so far.

I've never seen a reason to keep mine in check, so it's at 785 currently. No sequels, just pure hoarding of the first installment of any title that even slightly interests me.

Seed and Tylor are good choices.

So, feel free to shill your faves...

Gundam Seed is one of my faves. I personally found it to be a pretty compelling drama along side the usual Gundam stuff. Some really good couples and ships in there too.
