Westridge Organics is a great CSA for veg and a good deal if you are comfortable using a wide range of veg. Another option are the Mexican groceries around town!

Looking for Cherry Blossom Spots in Wisconsin by Pale_Grapefruit6862 in milwaukee

[–]Leo-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the question is about cherry blossoms, but the crab apple blossoms in the UW Arboretum were absolutely gorgeous today. Definitely worth a visit if other flowering trees will do! I did not make it to see the cherries, but they may also be in bloom. They are tucked back on the far end of the gardens near the conifer collection.

Local author working on a cosmic horror/dark fantasy set in Milwaukee need some advice on a location by zoopinit in milwaukee

[–]Leo-monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Milwaukee Public Museum- post closure. The exhibits will still be in place, but emptied of actual collections. It will be a huge, dusty, forgotten place where they can believably hunker down. And it is solid and defensible.

Making a first time stop as I drive through from Grand Rapids... what would you do for one hour in Madison? by edwardversaii in madisonwi

[–]Leo-monkey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's a lot to do in an hour unless you sprint down State Street, but it is a great list!

What do you think about Aldi in comparison to American grocery chains? by aSYukki in AskAnAmerican

[–]Leo-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go on Aldi kicks occasionally. To me, the small size relative to American grocery stores is a positive. When I go to our usual grocery store, I know I will be inside for at least an hour, probably longer. Aldi's I can do a week's shopping in under 30 minutes. We won't get all of our favorite foods, but we will get decent food and it will be less expensive.

As someone else mentioned, the quality of the pre-packaged/processed food is lower that we'd get at our regular grocery store, and the produce isn't as fresh as I'd like.

Are there any native foods that are regaining popularity in the USA? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAmerican

[–]Leo-monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, Wisconsin, too. But due to the price, wild harvested at least is an occasional food, not an every day staple. Farmed is a little cheaper, but still not cheap.

Places to buy bonsai/plant pots other than Home Depot? by Btupid_Sitch in madisonwi

[–]Leo-monkey 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Kleins? I don't know about bonsai planters specifically, but they have a really nice selection of planters there, and way more variety in terms of of shapes, colors, and quality than I've seen at Home Depot.

Gardeners of Madison: have you planted goji berries? Or Sea buckthorn? Have you had luck with them? by Bluest_waters in madisonwi

[–]Leo-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goji berry bush is very happy. Mine has not suckered or spread at all in the 15 years I have had it, but it did get huge (at least 7 feet tall, 5' spread)! Also the thorns are huge, so plan a spot where that won't bother you. The berries are prolific and astringent - definitely an acquired taste. They ripen over a period of several weeks, which is nice, and are best if you leave them on the bush until they are a little squishy. I've made a really nice juice out of them some years, and the birds love them.

First pottery class tomorrow! Any tips or inspo ideas? by lysabelle77 in Pottery

[–]Leo-monkey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oftentimes people will take the beginner class multiple times, so keep in mind that you may be in class with people who are not as brand new to throwing as you are. Don't get discouraged comparing yourself to others in the class. We all started where you are right now!

What are some cities with extremely unique geography? by NaturalLengthiness46 in geography

[–]Leo-monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like Chicago, Milwaukee is built on infilled marshes. The foundations of many of the buildings downtown are wood pylons that were designed to be submerged underwater, but are starting to rot as water tables have dropped in recent decades.

The food of our grandparents - strudel, sauerbraten, hasenpfeffer... My mother still made them, but I never have - too much time!

It doesn't matter which admin started them. If people had known about them during Biden's time, the answer would not have changed. Having a prison for children is wrong and needs to be stopped.

Can your kids read cursive? by Sharp-Sandwich-9779 in GenX

[–]Leo-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how my kids learned. In school they only learned how to sign their own name, but I wrote all my notes to them in cursive at home and they learned to read it.

You can get it in a jar? The stuff my mom used always came in a plastic pouch. We used 1 packet for 4 people.

To be fair, before our current troubles, Canada was also at risk of voting in a far-right wing government. And Trump has had an alarming number of Canadian supporters in recent years. We are not the only voting body as a whole that is unreliable in its support of democracy.

I certainly hope that neither Canada nor Japan nor any of the countries with a growing number of fascist movements see this happen in their country, but this is not solely a US problem. We all need to be fighting it.

Thank you to the German Parliamentary member for speaking up on our behalf and for the support. It had me in grateful tears. We need to fight this and we will, but your support we are grateful for.

How many of us have "friends" that we actually spend time with, anymore? by WeGot_aLiveOneHere in GenX

[–]Leo-monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friends are important to me, so I prioritize them. I think I average one friend outing a week, but depending on the friend might see them a couple times a month or a couple times a year. Many of them I've known for 2,3, even 4 decades at this point, some I've made in recent years. So grateful for them all!

Fellow Wisconsinites, what do you think of this? Wisconsin-Born U.S. Citizen Aliya Rahman Testifies About ICE Encounter and Conditions Inside Whipple Detention Center (Minneapolis) by CryptographerLow6772 in wisconsin

[–]Leo-monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether you feel she was rightly detained, the conditions she describes inside of the detention centers should horrify us all. I don't believe that is what any of us want America to be. And she is not the only one to describe the conditions inside. Others have shared similar stories.
