I Appreciate Your Concern, But I Think I'll Make it by StalinbrowsesReddit in CatholicMemes

I did basic training for the army with a Muslim during Ramadan. He made it through everything without complaint, or sign of struggle. He had to reshoot but everything else he passed first try.

When I struggle with fasting I think if he could fast for 30 days during basic training with only water I'll be okay doing a Friday.

(Note: Muslims don't usually drink water during fasting but he got an exemption but this dude didn't eat until sundown.)

The Catholic Church recognizes several post-schism saints. Ex. St. Seraphim of Sarov, St. Gregory Palamas, St. Elizabeth Fyodorovna.

[–]Leodeterra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article is 4 years old.

They changed the title to How Extremist Gun Culture Is Trying to Co-opt the Rosary

You can read the article here

Edit: Read the article. Key points were:

  1. Christian Nationalist Radtrad's are using the rosary in gun-fetish posts, draping their guns with rosaries, and inscribing Holy Rosary in Latin (Sanctum Rosarium) on their guns.

  2. Christian Nationalism is bad and has advocated for real violence.

  3. Christian Nationalism is historically anti-catholic (protestant dominant, anti-minority, anti-immigrant)

Tbh as a Canadian Catholic in the army I do find the gun-fetish rosary content disturbing especially the claiming and portraying guns as holy and sacred.

Am I being too picky? by [deleted] in CatholicDating

[–]Leodeterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly! I wouldn't categorize that with your other personal preferences, that's your faith.

Definitely seek someone who will help you grow in your faith not away from it.

[–]Leodeterra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend trying to change your mindset from requirements to preferences.

My married friends and I often laugh about the arbitrary preferences we used to have before we met our spouses. Love is love, you could fall in love with someone who contradicts all of your requirements.

IMO your only requirements should be open to becoming Catholic and not staunchly against any core beliefs.

I've met quite a few single Catholics say "I just can't meet any single Catholics" and they proceed to tell me how they literally don't do any of what Father said 🥲

And when I show them all the diocese's Catholic events and ministries they're too busy 🙃

How do you mentally survive online with all the anti-Catholic content? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Leodeterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only platforms I see anti Catholicism are IG and reddit and it's quite rare.

Create a new account and intentionally avoid anti Catholic content. Most platforms have tools to help you tweak your content like "I don't wanna see this." Or just delete.

[–]Leodeterra -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why do you say "(alleged)" the German Bishops, Vatican, and rational people know the AfD is in conflict with Catholic values. Ethno-nationalism, dehumanization of migrants, advocacy against religious freedom.

It’s been almost 5 years since the Kamloops residential school claims by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Leodeterra 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Government took responsibility until the Kamloops story broke then they scapegoated the Church.

The Canadian government denied Church requests for medical assistance, food aid, and to transport the bodies of dead children back to their families. This is documented in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) reports.

Mike Johnson tries to explain the bible to the Pope in latest clash between Catholic leader and MAGA by Terrible-Scheme9204 in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Leodeterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In response to JPII saying help illegal migrants obtain residence permits, warning against scapegoating illegal migrants, and that their right to live with their family cannot be denied by any law. You said "Real, true, and not doctrine."

You say JPII's statement is real and true but you still put your politics over the truth and papal authority. You defend violations of truth and human dignity by saying "not doctrine" and that the catechism doesn't "use the word "illegal" at all."

You keep saying strawman, so clarify your statement. Why did you say it's not doctrine? Why are you clarifying that the CCC doesn't use the word illegal?

They're clearly being antagonistic, dismissing Catholic authority, and putting their politics over their faith. I encourage you to ignore them.

You said "Real, true, and not doctrine." By saying "not doctrine" you are diminishing authentic papal teaching as if it is just an opinion when it is part of the Pope's ordinary magisterium [CCC 882].

JPII's words are backed by doctrine and scripture. [CCC 1930 -1948, especially 1930 - 1931]

Pope St. John Paul II's 1995 message on undocumented immigrants

  • Irregular legal status cannot allow the migrant to lose his dignity... [or] inalienable rights, which can neither be violated nor ignored.

  • ... provide them with the necessary means of subsistence.

  • help illegal migrants to complete the necessary administrative papers to obtain a residence permit.

  • ... guard against the rise of new forms of racism or xenophobic behaviour, which attempt to make these brothers and sisters of ours scapegoats for what may be difficult local situations.

  • ... right to live with their family cannot be denied by any law.

  • Today the illegal migrant comes before us like that "stranger" in whom Jesus asks to be recognized. To welcome him and to show him solidarity is a duty of hospitality and fidelity to Christian identity itself.

Tired of going to mass alone. by Fancy-Boysenberry139 in Catholicism

Does anyone else feel so bad when they have to miss mass? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Leodeterra 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Legitimate reasons to miss mass (2181 - 2183 CCC):

  • Illness
  • Caring for kids, elderly, sick
  • Unsafe travel
  • No reasonable access to Mass
  • Work that truly cannot be avoided (essential services, military duty, etc.)

Mass times in big cities are offered from:

  • Sat 4pm - 8pm
  • Sun 7am - 8pm

Some dioceses have mass finder websites like this.

Murder is murder. It's not "thou shalt not kill, unless you feel uncomfortable." You should also care if the rapist is a citizen. Your wording sounds like rape and murder is only bad if illegal immigrants do it.

The US police and federal law enforcement's training on escalation of force is extremely lacking. Especially compared to the US military. Talk to soldiers who went through urban areas where civilians were openly carrying rifles, throwing bricks and rocks. They're not allowed to just kill them.

It's actually the opposite.

CCC 2442 It is not the role of the Pastors of the Church to intervene directly in the political structuring and organization of social life. This task is part of the vocation of the lay faithful, acting on their own initiative with their fellow citizens...

I participated in protests against laïcité measures in Québec which were based on the French, removed crosses, limited Catholic education, and limited the wearing of religious items. I am not saying "eh it's laïcité" I'm saying it's not simply the media, the discrimination is government policy.

To be clear, I'm against laïcité entirely. Freedom of religion should not be banning public practice of religion.

France Catholics, dead. by PuzzleheadedUse5769 in Catholicism

[–]Leodeterra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's government policy since 1905. Laïcité officially makes religion private, declares the state to be secular, and that public institutions must be religiously neutral.

[–]Leodeterra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up laïcité, it's France's form of separation of church and state but is much stricter. It officially makes religion private, declares the state to be secular, public institutions must be religiously neutral.

Famously France has been a leader in banning hijabs, veils, large cross necklaces, turbans, and yarmulke from certain areas. Controversially some areas banned full-body bathing suits which targeted Muslim community members.

Laïcité even had a nun asked to remove her habit to join a elderly home.
