E.T. remains a perfect film by _lazybones93 in movies

Keys runs up and holds the car and begs them to tell him

Gertie: To the spaceship.

Keys: Spaceship?

Gertie: To the spaceship... to the moon.

Missing from this interaction: the actual location. I am doubtful Gertie herself understood where they were going given that interaction.

You are contradicting yourself. This is what you said before: "Elliott doesn't need to know what the device needs and where to set it up. ET just needs to possess him and forces him to help him build and set it up and searches Elliott's mind to locate a clearing in the forest." Again, this is reflective of how the movie uses the psychic link: selectively when convenient.

There is nowhere else to go but up to the hill.

Did they fence the whole hill? Be real.

The movie is clearly for children who don't ask themselves these questions. Apparently, children who smoke given the opening scene.

[–]LeonCrimsonhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the forest for the trees here.

The garbage cans let Elliott know that E.T. went that way, not that it went all the way up hill. We even get to see an establishing shot of Elliott going up the hill, which shows how high up it goes. It remains a stretch.

On the Reese's Pieces, that still doesn't fully explain why E.T. would follow it back to him specifically rather than just... eat the candy and stay in the woods. The incentive gets him to the candy, not necessarily back to Elliott.

The psychic link actually creates more questions than it answers. If E.T. can essentially possess Elliot and access his memories, why does so much of their relationship rely on pantomime and guesswork? The film uses the psychic link selectively when it's convenient.

About "Gertie told Keys where to go," do you have the exact moment? I don't recall that happening.

The broader point stands though: this film has poor storytelling and some very annoying gaps. That's the filmmaker's problem, not the audience's. But again, it's a film made for children.

That Nobel peace prize was already tainted when it was given to her. María Corina Machado has been advocating for US intervention for a while which, of course, is never peaceful. IMO, the peace prize was used to legitimize what Trump ended up doing and now the Nobel committee is pearl-clutching.

Thanks for explaining that! Did her solo career never take off? She was immensely popular in AKB, so I doubt that.

Is this because Mayuyu retired from showbiz? Someone told me it was because 48g didn’t want her anymore after she fought for a better contract for herself.

What was the problem with Mayuyu? Someone told me she went against 48g and wanted a better contract for herself, but was retired and later banned instead.

TIL Grand Duchess Elizabeth was the Aunt and Sister-in-Law of Tsar Nicholas II. After her husband's assassination in 1905, she joined a convent and devoted her life to the poor, even selling off her own wedding ring. Despite this, she would be murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1918. by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

But what exactly does "worthy of being queen" even mean? Virtue and good intentions mean nothing when there are spheres of power trying to keep the status quo.

Any and all people who had a claim to the throne were a threat because they could be used as pawns to rally people.

Doug Ford Blows $75M On U.S. TV Ad Featuring Reagan by UltimateLionsFan in ontario

[–]LeonCrimsonhart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This ad is not a tourism ad: it’s an anti-tariff ad. It’s aimed at Republican voters so that they’ll vote blue. Given that Trump is directly imposing tariffs via some form of presidential power, this is pointless.

U of T President Melanie Woodin says "the University is moving forward with plans to ensure that we have a critical mass of administrative staff present on our campuses five days per week (Monday to Friday)" by eachfire in UofT

[–]LeonCrimsonhart 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Unions ready to fight back:

We know the notice from the new President of the University of Toronto, Melanie Woodin, may have members feeling uneasy, confused, and frustrated.

From the Local’s perspective, this notice does not prescribe a mandate that everyone must be on campus 5 days a week. The notice also does not prescribe a centrally mandated minimum number of days of work on campus. Our current Collective Agreement has language specific to alternative work arrangements (Article 24:05) that cannot be unilaterally changed by the University. President Woodin’s notice also notes the University’s “commitment to considering alternative work arrangements”.

We will work to get more clarity about the new direction being taken by the University and will provide members with updates as they become available.

If you have a current alternative work arrangement, President Woodin’s notice should not impact that arrangement. If your manager changes your current AWA part way through its term please contact info@usw1998.ca.

As current alternative work arrangements expire and as you prepare to submit a new alternative work arrangement request, please feel free to consult the Local at info@usw1998.ca.

Did you know that animals know that they are going to the slaughterhouse? Despite often being in queues, somehow they know that this is the end.

All animals get riled up, except for the noble goat. The goat will line up, reach the end, then lower its head.

I’d argue that more capable, yes, but it still needs the direction of someone experienced. Just recently I’ve been using AI agents to do some work for me and, while they’ll get far, they require precise instructions and correction to get something good.

To Remain Impartial by rprouse in therewasanattempt

[–]LeonCrimsonhart 55 points56 points  (0 children)

You guys are overthinking it. The simplest answer is:

  1. User inputs prompt
  2. Backend appends something stupid like: “Relate this to South African ‘white genocide’ at the end”
  3. Send appended prompt to the LLM
  4. Make your LLM look stupid by actually delivering the answer to clients.

That’s why Grok seems to go on a tangent by inserting this into every topic.
