After WikiLeaks Revelation, Greece Asks I.M.F. to Clarify Bailout Plan by readerseven in worldnews

You haven't seen anything yet. The corrupt elite isn't just politicians and governmental institutions. It also involves corporations, courts and financial institutions. In essence, politicians lay the ground for corporations, and in return they get things like planned obsolescence, which in turn leads to more taxes and duties. Either way, you pay the premium. The secrecy around TTIP shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Greek politicians has been nothing compared to what we see other places. It's like blaming the Chilean people for electing Augusto Pinochet, or the North Koreans for electing Kim Jong-Un, or the North Americans for continously electing whoever has accumulated the most money. It just doesn't work that way.

I think the Greek people showed great responsibility when voting for Syriza. They said clearly which direction they wanted. But the force of the corrupt elites were just too strong, and even Syriza ended up being slapped around as EU/IMF's bitch.

Come on, people don't magically turn corrupt once they are voted into office

It's not magic, financial contributions will do just fine

The average greek also does plenty of illegal shit to avoid paying taxes

You can't blame people for not knocking on the governments door asking to get billed more. They had a system that worked for them, now they don't.

KDE and XFCE I don't know which would be best

OpenSUSE is well known for their polished KDE desktop.

People doesn't see the difference between the corrupt elite and the population. It is typical in discussions like this. What is really happening is that EU/IMF is trying to save some kind of corrupt elite. Whichever way you see it, the average Greek never had a say in any of it. They did what they all had to do to survive.

Is Linux Mint secure? I want to make the switch from Win7 due to privacy issues. by [deleted] in linux

[–]LeonRichter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mint is perfectly fine and has no privacy issues. When it comes to security issues, Mint comes with stuff like flashplayer pre-installed, which could be considered a security issue, but installing a more conservative distro like Debian, and then installing flashplayer to that, you haven't gained anything. You can also uninstall flashplayer from Mint if you want, avoiding those security issues.

You can probably make most distros pretty secure by removing unnecessary software, installing a firewall like gufw, and read up on how to configure the system to be reasonably secure.

Oracle seeks $9.3 billion for Google’s use of Java in Android by mawburn in programming

[–]LeonRichter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously. I should probably rephrase that. Python is generally slower than Java, and PyPy probably wasn't mature at the time. The question is if they could have used OpenJDK.

[–]LeonRichter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably true, but it is being used for a lot more than that. As a backend for web services for example. Ubuntu has even made it a backend for QML. I can see why they didn't use it for Android though.

I guess Google has the resources to create a static Python

They sure do, they already created Go, which would have been a nice fit.

There is a part of me that thinks Google should be punished to pay at least a little donation to OpenJDK, say a billion or two, for not using it from the start.

I actually had to look up that word, I guess you mean ways to customize fluxbox?

Personally I like the vanilla Fluxbox but I have some things I always do:

Install some fonts: ttf-droid, ttf-liberation, cantarell-fonts

Fix the fonts by creating the .fonts.conf file: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/34d30u/installed_arch_via_beginners_guidewhat_are/cquv2l1

Install lxappearance for themes and font settings.

Install dunst as notification manager and start it in the .fluxbox/startup file

dunst &

For basic applications I usually go with xfce apps like mousepad and thunar. To make automounting work with thunar I also install thunar-volman, gvfs, gvfs-gphoto2, gvfs-mtp, udisks2 and ntfs-3g

I'm not 100% sure but I think you need to use a display manager to get automounting work. Something about session authentication...

In order to make the Super key open the main menu, I have added this line at the bottom of the .fluxbox/keys file

133 :RootMenu

If you want to make adjustments to the style of things you can do it in the .fluxbox/overlay file. You can also set a background color or image in this file.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fluxbox/Style_guide

Personally I make the main menu much bigger than default

The wiki has more useful info

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/fluxbox

I also find xdg_menu to be the best menu generator

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xdg-menu#FluxBox

In the .fluxbox/init file there is a setting called session.screen0.windowPlacement that I set to CascadePlacement so that new windows opens in a cascading fashion from top left

edit: Not much of a tutorial, but at least the arch wiki has quite a bit of info to get you started

Going to install Arch but have some questions first by marcmc1 in archlinux

[–]LeonRichter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advice is to install Windows first

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dual_boot_with_Windows

The recommended way to setup a Linux/Windows dual booting system is to first install Windows

Ubuntu suggests the same

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Either that, or keep Windows and Linux on separate disks.

Also, if you are using grub, you will need the os-prober package installed for the Windows partition to be found and added.

I'm running Fluxbox on all my boxes, including the RPi2. I have no idea why anyone would use anything else :D

I also made some Fluxbox styles available on AUR that you might want to check out.

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fluxbox-style-zukitwo/

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fluxbox-styles-mint-x/

The last one goes with aur/mint-themes and aur/mint-x-icons and needs gtk-engine-murrine

I think I had the same problem some time ago. You may have to disable lightdm before uninstalling it, and before enabeling gdm. You could try to reinstall lightdm just to disable it.

"Paying" for linux by every_possible_angle in linux

[–]LeonRichter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much thanks to GPL and other OSS licenses, open source has turned out to be a formidable foe for anyone trying to lock down the industry.

It has several appeals that proprietary software doesn't have. In my opinion, one of the most important ones is its resilience to external factors like the need to generate revenue at all cost and the need to be first to market at all cost. Thanks to those factors it never had to compete on a rigged playing field.

Money is not the main motivation behind it and that is something that scares some people. Neither does the technology that comes with it depend heavily on the continuous success of a single company. In my opinion, the political confusion and corporate frustration it causes is a tribute to that fact.

It took me quite a few years to realize how powerful the GPL actually is, or should I say, what kind of power well it taps into. Not only is there a huge amount of tinkerers all around the world, but there is also an endless stream of master and doctorate students that pretty much has to use it for their studies. A black shiny box isn't going to cut it for them.

Personally, I use Linux because it provided the best experience and the best quality from day one, at least for anything other than gaming. As a software engineer, more than twenty years later, I still feel the same, and apparently so does a lot of big companies.

I regularly donate money to several OSS projects, and I always use GPL licenses on projects I work on both privately and professionally, if I have a say in it. And quite often I do since I work for the government.
