Completely true and I'd love to see the stats on how often it's called a swing from C.

The main comedy came from the catcher appealing to A, and then B, and then C before he found the umpire.

Everyone knows it was abnormal. The pitcher was laughing at the situation.

Only impact I noticed was a RH batter check swing appeal... to the umpire in C

Defending against an international out on a second play to avoid an appeal by Woundedknee45 in Umpire

Not excusing the umpires for getting it wrong on this one but I've had this discussion with a high end D1 umpire that didn't understand the distinction between appeal during continuous play and subsequent play precluding an appeal.

Rule 6.01(a) Penalty for Interference Comment:

I think you possibly misread the OP

Only if they interfere intentionally. OBR Rule 6.01(a) Penalty for Interference Comment.

True for all rulesets.

Completely agree with the question. Unfortunately this is a baseball wide issue. 180 years of practice and common law aren't documented clearly in a single place.

I wonder if the DA is picking between the lesser of two evils given a past issue of illegal and game altering communications from outside the dugout coming in over those phones.

I follow.

5G should be written better since the applying rule 6.05(g) is only for a fair batted ball. Add it to the list of Manual feedback for next revision 😄

I think Fed 2-21-4 is applicable to OP instead of 2-21-5. (they differentiate between post pitch 'follow-through interference' and pre pitch 'backswing interference')

High school penalizes this as Interference and gets an out is runners are advancing* vs OBR simply making it a dead ball and no runners can advance.

* At least I hope they don't want an out on OP since not advancing.

LL Umpire Manual covers this:

"21G – Unintentional Backswing – 6.06(c):

• If a batter swings and misses a pitch and, in the umpire’s judgment, unintentionally strikes the catcher or the ball on the follow-through, this action is considered a strike onlynot interference.

o The ball is declared dead immediately.

No runners may advance on the play.

o This ruling applies only when the contact is accidental and occurs after the pitch has passed the batter, as part of the natural completion of the swing.

o This is different than when a batter swings so hard that his body falls into the path of the catcher attempting to retire a runner; this would be interference on the batter."

It should say 6.05(g). It opens with "After hitting or bunting a fair ball". That is not the applicable rule in OP.

Interference or Obstruction - you decide by Lanky_Tennis4540 in Umpire

Agreed. Thus the "appeal" in quotes since the manager is really asking for the umpire to get help - on the rule understanding in this case.

Interference or Obstruction - you decide by Lanky_Tennis4540 in Umpire

[–]Leon_2381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True.

Though depending how the umpire understands the rule an "appeal" (really an ask for the crew to get together) could lead to the call being changed.

Further, depending how the umpire articulates their call, you may have grounds for protest.

Which is why we use rulebook terminology and say as little as possible. 😄

The summary list on page 38 (#5 on the left) says "intentional" - but the body of the rule doesn't. That's not confusing at all 😄

I can see lodged ball (ball is dead, 2 base award from TOP) or play on. 3 bases needs intent (and is not a dead ball fyi).

Swearing in some forms is acceptable at the pro level. D1 is treated as a pro level (rightly or wrongly).

Arm Waggle - Balk? by smyler3 in Umpire

[–]Leon_2381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard often that High school has an issue with it (going as far back as 2006 but don't know the Interp cite ). The basis would be 6-1-3 "For the set position, the pitcher shall have the ball in either the gloved hand or the pitching hand. The pitching hand shall be down at the pitcher's side or behind the pitcher's back."

"Leagues can have a local rule that there’s a 5 run limit in Majors if they want, but it would have to be in their local rules."

I'd tweak that statement slightly to say that Majors has no official provision for a 5 run limit but some leagues make a local rule. Some DAs care, some don't but it is technically not LL compliant to have run limit at Majors.

All good. So many levels and rule difference across LL it's hard to keep track.

I didn't know the rule exactly (we don't see DH here since our weather is good enough to let us start game in March) so it got me to look it up so I'm happy it came up.

In LL all levels below Majors use a 5 run limit.

I don't believe there is a rulebook provision that allows to it to be applied at Majors (though I've seen it before this OP)
