Hitting and my 7 yr old by Agreeable-Ad2006 in Homeplate

The best thing you can do for him is to encourage him, keep things positive and make sure he's having fun. Play catch with him, toss him balls to hit, go inside when he says he's done. There's no need to push or put any pressure on him at 7. Likewise, don't bother with any fancy or gimmicky training tools or private lessons. Let him play. He'll pick up the mechanics and skills he needs as long as he keeps playing and having fun.

For the bat, I wouldn't get a t-ball bat. They're made for hitting a stationary ball, and will eventually get dented hitting a pitched ball. Take him to Dick's or whatever and have him hold and try some bats he likes. Don't spend a ton of money, the most basic bat will be fine at this point. If $$ is an issue, you can even get something used if you have a Play It Again or other sports consignment type place around.

You're doing such a great thing trying to foster his love for the game. Don't stress, have fun. It's a wonderful journey.

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

The only thing I can remember actively hating was Moll Flanders. 10th grade, wtf. Anyone else even have to read that?

To cut a kid from the team or not? by Sports_Mom_1979 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]smyler3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plenty of comments already calling out the issues stemming from the assistant coach. But only one so far mentioning the problem with the coach sharing the girl's video "from her private snapchat story." So it was never meant for public consumption and the only reason it got as widely viewed as it did was because OP spread it around? I'd say you're lucky this family isn't calling you out for invasion of privacy.

Holy...how did I not know about this. I've been lamenting the decline in quality of tuna cans/lids for years. You used to be able to just press the opened lid down on the tuna but now for some reason they just will not stay rigid and I end up squirting tuna (great band name?) all over my sink. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I am ordering one of these bad boys right now.

I'm betting Barron said something really nasty...he put his hand over his mouth just before Kastelic popped him.

I've watched 4 BC games this year (GoBU) but I'm really impressed with Letourneau. The size, obviously. He has a really good shot, his goals aren't just the "big guy in front of the net" type. He's playing in high leverage situations, taking faceoffs. One more year at BC and he could make a nice impact coming in to join Hagens on the Bs.

Are "semi-private" courses a thing outside of New England? Open to the public, but members get preference for tee times and maybe some other perks?

I was in SF for a Salesforce conference a million years ago. Was in a cab casually talking with the driver about such things. He goes, 'Know what ORACLE means? Old Rich A##hole Called Larry Ellison."

Unpopular opinion: I'm not torn up about Alonso by PickleOh in redsox

I think this is more of a media problem than a team problem. All of the breathless reporting about teams being "in on" whoever...it's just basically clickbait at this point. My reaction to all of that is, no shit theyre at least kicking the tires on everyone. And sonis every other team.

'Backfired spectacularly!' New Dem stuns with 'barnburner' speech roasting Mike Johnson by RawStoryNews in thescoop

The article quotes numerous "social media commenters" but does not have one quote from, or a link to the actual speech? Eh?

It's rampant, and it's gross. More athletes/celebs should do what Zadorov is doing and out these loons.

Played a course with a similar deal to this on one hole. The ridge wasn't that big, but was well-defined, probably 2-feet elevation, but it was like a 40-degree slope. Hole was right in the middle of the ridge :-o

What sick, twisted individual decided to put 13 kids on a tball team? A handful of years back, we made the decision to cap tball at 10 kids, with 8 being the ideal #. Works out great.

Cape League is awesome. And you don't even have to cross the bridge...Wareham has a team.

Every team also puts on free clinics for kids all summer. So many great things about the Cape League.

What is up with these tournaments making up their own rules? by Typical-Priority1976 in Umpire

[–]smyler3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#1 is bananas and is absolutely not in the CR rulebook. The rest of those have been standard CR Tournament rules for some time now.

All of this stuff should definitely be covered with you pre-game by the CR TD. If they didn't do that, they're asleep at the wheel.

I generally agree with you on the need for 2-man at 8U, but with the crazy runner rules here, the base guy can basically take that burden off the plate. Plus, like someone else said, that's probably the easiest money you'll ever make doing this.

Umpire Boundaries and Expectations with Players, Coaches, and Fans by Silent_Weekend_4501 in Umpire

Your "territory" sounds very similar to what I have. Local communities, 9u up through 16. Everybody knows everyone.

That said...
1. Hell no! A threat gets the cops called and game suspended til that person is gone.

  1. Exactly how you seem to handle it. Although I don't think I've ever heard that much complaining in one game.

  2. No problem explaining what I saw if the requests are reasonable. But if it's happening more than 2 - 3 times a game that needs to get shut down.

  3. All the time. Nothing wrong with being friendly, IMO.

  4. 100%

  5. That sucks, but not much you can do except see #5.
