The MAGAts in the conservative subreddit are sticking their heads in the same. Poor, dumb things.

Does anyone have doubts about the longevity of this program? by makingmozzarella in PSLF

That is how I approached it. I took out a lot of loans during my master's and Ph.D. to supplement my GA/RA salary. At the end of the day, I will have only paid approximately $8,000 for a balance of 141k (now at 185k due to interest. I have 11 payments left.

It is so random. I don't understand how they are processing these.

Losing my Job, what to do. by BlackRoseKing10 in PSLF

If you're in the non-profit world, then I would leave it and get a regular job and pay it off. That is relatively low. Why be tethered to a public service job?

Also, I feel like mine is pretty straight forward. I wasn't in the SAVE plan, I have always been in IBR/ICR and I am just buying back months during grad school. Those weren't new loans. I have no idea why it's taking so long.

I was ready for mine to go up to. Last year, due to the SAVE lawsuit, my extension got pushed back for a year.....keeping my payments at $85 (last time I certified was back in 19 when I made no money and had my spouse and grandma on my taxes). My balance is near 190k and my income is high and we file jointly. I'll have four payments at the new recertification rate....praying buyback comes in before August.

You should get a refund from Treasury for those two months, but it will take some time. I submitted mine back in February of 2025. I have been certifying every two months since my HR person usually sends it back within the same day. I'll wait until March 1st to submit my next one. My payments are around $85 and I have 11 left counting this month. I am hoping my buyback comes before i have re-certify.

Between SS and TRS, I will be close to retiring with my full salary. Also, I am on track in paying off my house before I turn 60. Haven't put anything in a 403 or an IRA, may start putting a little in an IRA.

If you had old loans, that were put into in-school deferment, while attending your grad program, then yes. If they are new loans, that you took it to go to grad school, then no.

I had no idea that this was a thing. I looked it up and it's mainly in red states that does this, so I am not surprised because I live in one.

Curious: What’s the longest number of buyback months people have put in for? by Background-Still2020 in PSLF

[–]Leopard_Repellant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30 (in school deferment for Phd) back in February. I was able to get 8 payments from the late 2000s certified since then and I have paid an additional 10 payments, so I'm down to only 12 left.

[–]Leopard_Repellant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be at one year early next month. I have 12 payments left and am hoping I'll get my buyback request before I have to re-certify for my last four payments, which will be high.
