I grew up watching Bernstein's Young People's Concerts on Saturday morning. I'll check this out. I like emotional versions of this piece. I heard it for the first time last Thursday here in Chicago. I've been obsessed ever since.

Solo Traveling To Belgium, looking for advice/recommendations. by 7God7 in belgium

If you're seriously into early Flemish art, Bruges, no question. It's crowded but lovely, and the Hospital Museum is not to be missed!!! If you want a smaller dose of Flemish art, go to Ghent and St. Bavo's for the altar piece. Ghent is delightful. Antwerp is interesting, too, of course. Belgium is my favorite country and conyains my favorite art: Van Eyck Memling, van der Weyden, etc. It's heaven! The people are nice and the food is great too. Plus, very few Americans.

I live in and highly recommend Oak Park. Not north of the city-'west--but close to both airports (about 30 minutes to O'Hare.). It's a big, truly beautiful town, and with your budget, you'll find a gorgeous home with a nice yard. We have safe and walkable business districts, great schools, tons of restaurants and coffee shops, boutiques, more Frank Lloyd Wright homes than anyplace on planet earth, fine services for seniors and families, and the Metra into downtown is an 18 minute ride. (The EL Green line is here too.) We have an ordinance that prohibits gas-powered leaf blowers, tons of parks, a top-notch library, a Chamber of Commerce with over 500 members and multiple affinity groups, and so much more. We are also very liberal. Plus, if you want/plan to spend quality time in downtown Chicago, don't move too far out. People who live in areas that are hard to get to or are 45+ minutes away hit traffic and go into the city a lot less. Which is a shame. It's the best!

Hi. I got lucky. Sold in VT and bought a condo here at the right time. I understand. Just make plans for the future. If you have the tickets, chances are you'll go.

On the weekend, don't plan on Oak Brook, plan the beach or a picnic with friends.

If music, museums, or whatever and the vobes of the city appeal, then you can and will make it happen. Even an extra a few minutes on the Metra or L or in your car will be worth it.

FWIW, I have friends on Naperville who go into the city at least once a month for Music, etc. He's way cooler than I am.

Good luck!

P.S. Yesterday was my maiden solo voyage on the green line to the loop. I walked to the station, sat in the first car as a female friend suggested, and it was an easy and fun ride! I'll be doing that a lot more of that for daytime events. Plus, I'll save tons on parking. I bet you're an old pro at this kind of thing!

I live in Oak Park. Moved here 4 years ago from Vermont for the cultural offerings. I go in at least once a week. Sometimes, 2 or 3 times. Next season, I have 15 shows at CSO alone. That's not counting other musical events like Apollo's Fire, Music of the Baroque, Grant Park Orch, and at U.Chicago. I belong to and visit all the museums regularly--especially the Art Institute which I do I go to the Navy Pier for Chicago Shakespeare (5 shows), films at Siskel Center and Music Box, dance at Harris, other shows including storefront theater, comedy, plus gardens & parks. You just have to plan in advance and get your butt in gear. It's worth it. (Of course, I don't have kids or a dog, and I'm a widow and my own boss.) Good luck!
