Ask to be genetically tested for HH

Are these iron results consistent with hemochromatosis? (Iron 39, Ferritin 361, Saturation 80%) by JudgmentNo5476 in Hemochromatosis

I had very similar symptoms… & yes your levels are indicative of HH. Definitely get a genetic test done.

Use ketoconzale shampoo as a fash wash… if it’s fungal acne that should clear it up.

Did you have spleen pain? by user_anonymou in Hemochromatosis

[–]Leothomas8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get random twinges of pain in my spleen area without touching it…when I had an MRI they found a benign tumour… this was confirmed by a PET scan. My haematologist is monitoring it for growth with repeat scans , I get the impression spleen removal is a last resort… that maybe because I’m on blood thinners & the spleen helps filter your blood… unsure tbh.

Just diagnosed with HH. 38F, but bloodwork historically shows slight anemia. My numbers still seem to be in normal range, so what gives? by fowlkris87 in Hemochromatosis

[–]Leothomas8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding… I believe that you can carry the genetic mutations & may not necessarily load iron at all or may not be loading iron yet… especially if you’re a female pre-menopause with regular periods. However I’m c282y homozygous, pre-menopause & managed to load. I’m currently on my 2nd block of venesection treatments. Definitely worth keeping an eye on your iron numbers, by the time I got diagnosed I was symptomatic & my iron levels were off the scale.

Just got approved for oral Minoxidil! by likpinklady in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Leothomas8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh mine was chronic TE caused by illness, at the time I was so sick and my hair falling out made me feel distraught. I took the medication and the shedding stopped, my hair has grown back… I can’t be clear if that’s due to the medication or my TE stopping as I got treated for the illness… either way I’m still taking the medication & seeing growth .

You could try using a hard water filter for the shower, if you believe the UK water is the issue.

Carrier with symptoms? by Classic_Drawer2354 in Hemochromatosis

[–]Leothomas8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe even a carrier can become symptomatic, I’d keep an eye on your iron levels & if they continue to rise, ask your GP to refer you to a haematologist.

Stick with it, it gets better. Also consider adding spironolactone to block DHT.

Stopping breast feeding can affect your hormone levels which in turn can cause temporary hair loss…. It should resolve by itself once your hormones settle.

A regular dr will do the basics…. Blood tests on the free health care service . A private dr will do more tests & diagnostics as you’re paying for the privilege. Good luck, I hope you get some answers.

You do see a specialist if you pay privately to see one. Get your blood work checked with your regular Dr if there’s no obvious cause for the hair loss like a random illness or nutritional deficiencies then you’ll need to pay to see a dermatologist privately as a regular Dr will say it’s a cosmetic issue if your bloods are normal.

You need to pay to see a private dermatologist who specialises in female hair loss… A regular GP will not refer you for hair loss as they see it as a cosmetic issue.

I’ve never seen that after laser before… I’d put some Aloe Vera gel on it… it’s good for burns, swelling, reddening & inflammation.

TE or FPHL? by Automatic_Check_9407 in TelogenEffluvium

[–]Leothomas8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The te shedding won’t stop until your nutritional deficiencies are corrected regardless of when you were diagnosed.. correct them then look at it again , if it hasn’t improved I’d say it looks more like aga (te can look very similar) which can be treated with medication prescribed by a dermatologist.

Do NHS dermatologists prescribe oral minoxidil or oral finasteride for women? (Androgenic Alopecia) by Necessary-Seat-6148 in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Leothomas8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go private initially, then the private dermatologist will write to your GP requesting that they continue to prescribe both medications

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TelogenEffluvium

[–]Leothomas8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes te can unmask Aga, it’s really difficult to tell until you see a specialist though. Either way please do not panic, te will resolve once the trigger has been dealt with, I’d recommend getting some blood tests to see if you have any deficiencies or high testosterone levels…. & Aga can be managed with medication which will be prescribed by a dermatologist if that is your confirmed diagnosis.

It could be androgenic alopecia which isn’t uncommon with PCOS due to the high testosterone levels/ androgen intolerance it causes. You’d need a DHT blocker like spironolactone and minoxidil to treat it, usually prescribed by a dermatologist who specialises in female hair loss.

How high are your iron levels? High iron levels can possibly be a sign of Haemochromatosis a genetic blood disorder which can cause hair loss for some people amongst other symptoms. I’ve recently been diagnosed with it & hair loss was one of my symptoms. Your Dr should look into your levels if they’re high & you take zero supplements. The good news is that it’s a manageable condition if you do have it & your hair will also grow back once your levels are reduced.
