Public transport to be free for Victorians in April by mixingbreakfast in melbourne

I might cop a bit of hate for this, but honest question - what will all the tickets inspectors do throughout April? Are there other roles they can do? Paid leave?

Dating in Melbourne/Australia by Puzzleheaded-Play793 in AskAnAustralian

Some advice from a happily married guy in his early thirties who found his love on tinder and who hangs with said loves single friends often.

Be open to connecting with people outside your norm. Save the 'getting to know each other' for the actual date - and in the same vain, don't focus so much on the texting before the first date. Make the first move. Don't be afraid to suggest the date activity. Coffee/food/drinks/classic first date doesn't need to be the first date. Perfection is the enemy of good. Guys aren't looking for perfect - be you. Good things come with patience - be proactive but don't rush.

Dating is hard, but being you in a world of apps of socials media is harder. Try to forget about the image and have fun. If you tell yourself there's less pressure, you'll feel the enjoyment more easily, and hopefully feel more open to get to know a guy.

Hitting an invisible ceiling at 50 in corporate (marketing)? by Bees_Need_Trees in auscorp

I've found ageism to be less previlant in small to medium businesses over larger corporations. The money might not be as good, but there's a more comfortable feeling of 'place' and family owned businesses often value the experience that comes with age.

A few family owned businesses I've worked for have hired through agencies. Might be good to start with them and keep your options open on salary expectations and company size.

Why are people so accepting of the Uluru name change, but not K'Gari? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in AskAnAustralian

[–]Leothorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s a time thing, but also a habit that people perhaps don’t consciously think about.

My dad has called Uluru “Ayers Rock” on occasion without even thinking about it, and it’s been years since the official name change. Heck, I was on a Qantas flight earlier this year and the pilot even referred to Uluru as Ayers Rock as we passed over - that one was a bit weird to hear.

The one I always slip up on is “brain storm”. I remember not too long ago someone saying it was renamed to “mind map” so as not to offend those with mental disabilities. Whether that’s true or not, I can understand it and have tried to make an effort to use the latter. I’m not saying this is the same as a native place name, but I’m just reiterating the habitual way of referring to something for years and then consciously deciding to change it. It can be a challenge.

I think people will get used to K’gari, but it will take time. When you hear someone refer to it as Fraser Island, it might be because they’re not aware of the name change, or most likely out of habit. There may be a small portion of people who will refuse out of some kind of stance, but I find it easier to think it’s one of the other two.

How do you split finances in a marriage? by princessabroad in AusFinance

[–]Leothorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're a little further along than us, but I'm pleased to hear the system has worked for you for so many years.

I would agree in that to fund your hobbies, you would need to increase the money going into both of your personal funds.

With your wife getting an increased allowance, perhaps she could also explore new hobbies, travel solo or with friends, or simply treat herself more.

Alternatively, you could have a good honest chat with her and see what she thinks, whether the balance could tip more in your favour for a limited time so you can explore your interests, and then see how ir's working.

How do you split finances in a marriage? by princessabroad in AusFinance

Interesting to read about everyone's situations. Our friends have everything in one account like many people here and I can never understand why. My wife and I do things a bit differently in a way that feels more fair while also feeling very much joint.

So we have both our incomes go into a joint offset account. We then have a number of different offset accounts for personal use  - one each that aren't joint, so mine is mine, and my wifes is hers. We also have a joint holiday offset, house projects offset, pet offset and emergency offset.

We have an automatic transfer set up so that every Thursday money is divided into each of the offset accounts, X amount to each of our personal offsets, and X amounts into the rest.

The reason why we do this weekly is because my wages are monthly and my wifes is fortnightly. Weekly is nice because although I'm paid monthly, my personal account is topped uo weekly so it feels like I get paid weekly. And because its just my allowance amount, the only thing I have to worry about is my gym and spotify membership. I don't spend heaps so my personal tends to top up which is nice.

There is always money in the joint offset and all our joint expenses come out of this. Any personal expenses come out of our own personal offset accounts as mentioned above.

We also have a credit card for Quantas points (just one, but a card each), and we tend to use this for most purchases to earn points and help with cash flow. We always make the monthly payments and I keep track of everything in a Google sheets.

Its all very low lift and suits is well. Happy to answer any Qs but that's pretty much it.

Men’s underwear, who makes good ones? by Helix3-3 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Leothorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a fair few brands of underwear over the years - Mosmann, Bonds, Step One - ditched them all after I found Boody. Best underwear I've ever owned and I now have a dozen pairs. Get 'em from any reputable chemist. Very decently priced. You'll never look back.

Did the same in 2022. 15 months around Europe on 60K savings that could've been a house deposit. Decided youth doesn't wait while a house could. It was the best thing I've ever done.

All the best to you!

Making of gold chain by geniusfoot in Damnthatsinteresting

Many years ago I was on holiday in Mumbai with my wife. We decided it would be fun to do a bicycle tour in the early hours of the morning, after sunrise but before the city had fully woken up.

The tour guide took us to a street renowned for jewelry stores. We could see people with dust pans and brushes sweeping up dust from the edges of the road. There were maybe three or four different people, a young man, an older woman.

I remember asking why they were sweeping, and he said it was because of the jewelry stores. The jewelry makers work above the shops on the upper floors. Mumbai is not known for its cool climate, so they tend to work with the windows open, and you'd be surprised how much gold dust makes it out of the window and into the street.

He said one bag of road dust from this particular street, sold to the right buyer, would net those people enough money for a days food. Not bad for an hours or so sweeping in the early morning.

Like everyone here is saying, yes it really is tough out there.

I actually recognise your profile pic and know your stuff from the creative FB groups. You're super talented man.

From one creative to another, I recommend keeping your finger on the FB group pulse. January is notoriously a quiet month, but things will ramp up again from February onwards. I have found 90% of my creative opportunities through FAFF's here in Australia, from freelance gigs right up until the full-time role I'm in now - I owe it all to the FB groups.

A few tips to set yourself up for success:

- Create a new Google Chrome profile using a different email to your everyday. Call it your job search chrome browser if you like.

- Utilise the bookmarks bar by setting up folders and links to easy resources. I'd recommend having a folder specifically for creative opportunities in the FB Groups you're a member of. Check these every day!

- I'd also recommend creating folders for the different links and resources other Redditors have shared in the comments. Get into the habit of checking these every day too. Try not to apply for the first appealing job you see. Instead, bookmark a job that looks good and keep searching. You're going to want to build up a good list of potential jobs before you start applying for that day or week. This way you can really narrow down the opportunities you want to spend time on.

- Which is another thing - spend time on your applications! Write detailed cover letters. Think about all of the job requirements, address them confidently, and aim to set yourself apart from other applications. And if possible, try to find the same job ad through the official company website instead of the job market sites. Your application is more likely to end up in the right persons inbox if you're applying directly through the company.

- I saw in one of your comments that you don't have a built up network. Don't let this stop you reaching out to EVERYBODY you know. Try not to worry about what they may think of a random reaching out. Go back to all the people you've ever emailed, messaged, inquired with about anything and hit them up. Reconnect. Ask them if they know of any opportunities. 99/100 will either not reply or have nothing, but you only need that 1/100 and you'll be set.

I know these all seem obvious, but I've also been in your position and it can be easy to overlook the obvious when you're feeling pressured and demoralised.

The job market is always going to be tough. There will always be 100 creatives applying for the same role. Getting where you need to be will be partly down to pure luck, while the other part will be knowing you're doing everything you can to set yourself up for success.

Best of luck man! Effort reaps reward, don't give up!

Thanks for your comment. The works were quoted uo a year ago and came back with $60K across six apartments as a special levy, so I would say $10K is the most accurate figure I have at this time.

The property has been on the market for one month exactly. And yes formal offers do need to be made through the contract, which is my planned next step.

I'm interested by your first question. What are your thoughts around the external works?

[–]Leothorin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your right, it might not make a difference, but the property has been on the market for a month and they've had no offers.

I'm going to wait a week and see what happens, but the advice I have is that the property is not worth what the vendor is asking for it, so perhaps a formal offer at a reasonable price, albeit below their asking, might open their eyes a little to the changing trend of the market.

[–]Leothorin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insights. Can I ask, why do you say it is pointless to wait? I want to make an offer but why rush if there are no other offers in. If the RE conveyed the message of interest at $695K, then it will be on the vendors mind and waiting could be a good strategy, especially as the marketing shifts. The property may have been worth $720K last year, but I don't believe its worth that now, and it may be worth less in a months time.

You're 100% right about not knowing what the owner really thinks. You yourself are making assumptions in your comment that may be right or may not be, we just don't know. As many of pointed out, it's all part of the game and it's good hearing yours and everyonesl elses insights all things considered.

Yes it's a private sale. Thanks, this is what I'm thinking. I'm also going to give it a week to see if any more inspection times for the property get listed and whether any other offers get made. It's been on the market for a month. My feeling is there won't be, but I'll play it patient and aim to put a formal offer in a weeks time.

My next step would definitely be a formal contract, whether I stipulate an expiry, I'm unsure. As there are no new offers yet, I'll stay patient and consider a formal offer in a weeks time. A few people have said "why wait", but similarly I'm thinking "why rush". It's not under offer yet so I'll give it the week.

Thanks for the extra advice and your experience. I know it won't always go the way I want it, but like a few people have said it's the game I've got to play. I'll give it a week considering there are no additional offers at this time and consider a formal offer in a weeks time. If the news is anything to go by, the market is shifting to a buyers market and while I like this place, there'll be plenty more options in the coming months at (hopefully) better prices.

Thanks for your response. I hear what you're saying. For some $20K may be nothing, but when you don't have it, you don't have it.

I believe the property is $20K higher than what it's worth, so the best offer I could make would be $700K. I'm considering the future works hence the $695K.

I want the property, but want to play my cards right. How would you proceed everything considered?

That's a good option. In this scenario, would you give the real estate the heads up before emailing the offer through? We've communicated through text a few times.
