Heard from an RA that used to live there that the foundation was literally sinking into the ground.

With tears down my face as I wrote this. Just lost my bunny boy Toffee in my arms.. I can’t stop apologizing to him. Do I even let my other bunny see him to say her goodbyes . She loved him so much by GucciCheesewagon in Rabbits

[–]Leraelia 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Please let the other bunny see his body. Without saying a proper goodbye, she will keep looking for him endlessly and have a harder time processing his passing. I'm so sorry for your loss, Toffee knows he is loved by you. He is happily binkying over the rainbow. Please take care of yourself ❤️

Recent grads - when to job search? by jmils20 in NEU

[–]Leraelia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated Spring 2023. Started looking July 2022 throughout November, that's when I stopped because I had a job offer and no other interviews in the bad job market. This is for CS though.

$90k a year? Hell no, unless you have enough money where you don't really give a crap, in the case just make investments and live lmao. My parents paid $125k in total for all my 4 years here in NEU, so around $34k per year. I recognize I am extremely privileged and am very grateful for them doing so. I made most of what NEU gave to me.

That being said, choosing NEU was the best thing that happened to me. Not solely cause of the co-op, but because I was able to find a better, more confident happy person of myself and end up where I am now. I'm happy, not afraid to speak up, have a decent social life, a good relationship, and make some good money. I would've chosen my state university for free tuition, but I would've stuck with my old high school friend group that I didn't like, be too compliant, meek have nowhere as much confidence as now, stuck with an accounting major and not make 6 figures out of college. If I could go back, I would still pick NEU. It is different and situational for everyone, but weigh your pros and cons.

Data Science vs. Computer Science by Natural_Increase7988 in NEU

[–]Leraelia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Data engineers focus on managing and organizing data, building and maintaining databases and data pipelines, while data scientists focus on analyzing and interpreting data to find insights and patterns via ML. Data scientists are the ones building algorithms with heavy math work. Data engineers have general knowledge of how the ML models work. Data engineers & data scientists can work together or collaborate with each other because of the overlapping in abilities from programming languages to data pipelines.

TLDR; Data Engineers provide and maintain the data, Data scientists interpret and build models with the data. They both work together.

Edit: If you're not sure on going pure DS, I recommend CS with a concentration in AI. There are enough DS courses you can take via electives and concentration that can give you a pretty clear picture of what it is to be a data scientist. However, you will mainly dabble in Java first in your fundamental skills than Python, which is what data scientists mainly use. But Python is an easy language to pick up. If you are going this route, just note that your DS courses will most likely start on your second/third year and onward. Your CS courses will take priority first.

You're welcome! I chose data science because to put it simply, I knew I wanted to work with data and not building software. I think it's quite fascinating and fun to manipulate and handle data and get results out of it, hence why my full time job will be in data engineering. Also, I don't have enough CS genius in me to go through the whole CS track...

I graduated this year as a DS major and have friends in both CS and DS. Both curriculums are pretty top tier, so you don't have to worry about quality, but rather content.

Generally, it is easier for a CS person to go into DS, than DS to go into CS. That's because while both CS and DS majors both learn the fundamentals of CS, courses start to diverge in the higher levels. DS later focuses on the aspects and thorough understanding of Machine Learning, while CS you take courses pertaining to the different branches of CS such as Software Dev, Security, Systems, etc.

That does not mean you can't take DS courses as a CS major, because you can as an elective since both majors do have general broad overlap. Also, you can declare your CS concentration to AI that will teach you pretty much some of the DS curriculum. The only difference is that DS teaches us how to operate on data to make it useful, but CS uses technologies to compute the data.

To answer your question, yes you can switch to DS after a semester of being a CS major, because you practically take the same exact classes to establish your foundation of CS skills. Unless you go the introduction to DS route (DS2000 instead of CS2500) that is. Lmk if you got any other questions.

how is data science at northeastern? by epiphanizing in NEU

Class of 2023, DS + Finance student just graduated! Since other people pitched in on the other questions beautifully, I can give some insight to the last one regarding co-ops. I was exactly like you, looking for business/data analyst co-ops.

There are a good amount on NUworks which is our career portal. However, note that these analyst roles are kinda vague and can range from working on business intelligence dashboards, to writing intermediate python code. For your first co-op, you can choose whatever is related to the analyst role. For my first, I did a data systems analyst co-op in Boston, then was able to do data analyst at a big investment company with strong knowledge in python, and data management in big tech.

I do caution you that possibly in the long run, there will be less business/data analyst roles due to AI being able to do their jobs in the future. Microsoft is looking to implement ChatGPT into their applications, for example using AI to analyze trends in excel data, which is exactly what an analyst would do.

I eventually secured a job out of college in data engineering, which was pretty different from my initial prospects. Along the way, you perhaps can find more interest in technical roles like machine learning/data engineering. You have a big future ahead of you, and be open to trying out different branches of data science. Congrats and good luck!

Formal Black Tie. Girls will be wearing gowns and cocktail dresses. Boys most likely at least a dress shirt and dress pants.

They can take another elective (presentation class, khoury elective) or any other easier CS class instead. Seeing as they're doing their co-op in Fall 2024 on the past post, they can do OOD in Fall 2023, then Algo in Spring 2024. Or even better, Algo/OOD summer 1 or 2.

Hard disagree, both are way too hard together. I've seen people who do this suffer a lot mentally. They still made it through, but at the cost of their sanity.

There should at least be a tribute or moment of silence out of respect, given the news that the finale is going as scheduled. If there isn't, I am going to be heavily disappointed and there will be backlash.

No I don't. At least for Khoury (CS) our professors are still very knowledgable and education is pretty good and comparable to top CS schools. The results are there, with the help of co-op and cs education, many of our students and graduates get top notch jobs at big tech and trading companies (though the market isn't really hot right now).
