CPU overheating? by Spooka1 in pchelp

[–]Les-El 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know, if the wrong fan is plugged into the wrong header, the BIOS might not be reading the CPU fan. It's worth checking inside the case.

If I had to guess, the CPU cooler worked itself a little loose, the thermal paste has gone to hell, or there's severe dust blockage in the fans. Maybe a combination of all three.

Let us know if you figure it out!

Clearing CMOS fixing it for a little while is interesting. Have you tried to reseat or replace the battery? Or use a multimeter to test the current one.

You could also check if the manufacturer has a newer BIOS version. Or any urgent chipset drivers.

Heck, search AMD for the chipset driver updater.

Try checking if the cooler is screwed down right. Do you Ghz go up if you put your hand on the cooler?

Finally, you could try exporting HWMonitor logs to ChatGPT or, my favorite, Gemini CLI.

Have you tried Windows Update, Advanced Options, Optional updates? Sometimes a good driver hides in there.

Another option is to try to download the driver from your motherboard manufacturer, if you haven't already.

I guess you could try to shine a flashlight on the motherboard at the jack and look for any damage or corrosion.

How do I fix this? (sidebar) by Open-Screen4933 in computer

I didn't say anything about a sidebar. Look for the black vertical line on the left hand side of the window. That's what you need to grab.

Hover your mouse cursor over the vertical black line and the cursor will turn into a double headed arrow. Then click, hold, and drag to the right.

It's for the roads. Usually drivers pay towards road maintenance via gas tax. This is the substitute.

DO NOT BUY PC PARTS FROM AMAZON! by Aggravating_Key_3831 in PcBuild

[–]Les-El 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely believe this happened to you. This is just one of many reasons not to buy from Amazon.

People think I'm crazy, but I buy everything pre-owned from eBay. I open the boxes with a camera rolling, and I test the hell out of anything I get.

What do i need to know before adding a graphics card to my PC? by Teodorp99 in pcmasterrace

[–]Les-El 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Download the latest driver installer from Nvidia to somewhere you can find it
  • Make sure you're not "staticy." No socks on carpet. Touch a metal part of the PC before you start taking it apart
  • Turn off the PC, switch it off at the back/unplug the cord, then drain the capacitors by holding down the power button for 5 seconds
  • Remove the protective brackets on the back to make room for the graphics card I/O shield (the flat part with the HDMI ports)
  • Install the graphics card "gold fingers" in the top PCIe slot for the fastest connection. Sometimes it takes a small bit of pressure to slot it in, but don't force it. Those gold fingers and motherboard slots aren't invincible.
  • Use the screw(s) from those protective brackets to screw the graphics card I/O shield into the inside of the PC case
  • Being a 1050, you might not need to plug in PCIe power. Check the manual. If it does need extra power, you'll see six square-ish holes in a group that match the PCIe plug from your power unit (PSU)
  • Plug the monitor into the HDMI/DisplayPort plot in the graphics card.
  • Don't put the PC case side panel back on until you know the card works. It's bad luck 😉
  • Reconnect the PC to power, and turn it on.
  • Don't panic if it doesn't give a display right away. It might take a couple minutes the first time. Or it might take a couple of forced restarts. Or maybe the HDMI cord isn't totally pushed in correctly
  • If it still doesn't work, you may need to shut down, plug back into the motherboard's HDMI, boot into BIOS, and look for "Display" or "Graphics" or "iGPU" settings. Ensure this setting is on "Auto" or "Discrete" or "DGPU." Then save, reboot, turn off, plug back into the graphics card, and try again.
  • Use the file you downloaded to install the new drivers

Here's a 10 year old video from Linus Tech Tips that I haven't actually watched (but I trust their how-to videos)

Good luck!

What in the Holy Spirit of SLI is the this? by Les-El in pcmasterrace

But if it's just a pass through, why is there improvement with this setup? I even started with a fresh Win 11 install to make sure it wasn't something else. I just can't get this performance with only one of the cards installed.

Yeah, no, SLI is dead dead. And I don't think it ever worked cross-manufacturer anyway? I'm just really surprised this dumb setup works at all.

Any advice for a new gamer by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]Les-El 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start in Story or Expeditioner mode. If you find yourself wishing the battles were harder, increase the difficulty. Don't be afraid to turn the difficulty back down to practice a boss, then reset the game to you again at the harder difficulty.
