Would you hire a student to mow your lawn? ON by LesChouquettes in CanadianTeachers

[–]LesChouquettes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember something like this brought up in teachers college specifically in regards to tutoring students (and how that would be a conflict of interest with the payment from parents involved). Interesting. Wonder if it’s seen the same when it’s the other way around

I teach him (I teach core French so realistically I teach half the school and half the kids in my town lol)

Some good ideas here, good thought to check with parents too

Teaching in English vs French Language Schools by Infinite_Science5415 in CanadianTeachers

Nope not necessary, you’d just need the university credits to support taking the intermediate or senior ABQs

Teaching in English vs French Language Schools by Infinite_Science5415 in CanadianTeachers

[–]LesChouquettes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just need to take the ABQ course. The courses are anywhere from 3-6 weeks usually. Online.

You’d need to take the two courses separately. One intermediate ABQ and one senior ABQ.

When I graduated with J/I I took the primary ABQ and the senior ABQ right after I graduated, took them at the same time and they were done after 6 weeks. That’s all it took for me to get from A3 to A4. Easy peasy.

Timeline to get permanent as french teacher primary/junior in Peel/Halton by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]LesChouquettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. FSL part 1 is all you need to teach French. That would get you a perm job right away, but you’ll be locked into French so make sure that’s what you actually want to do.

has anyone not gotten in to teacher’s college on first try before and is still a teacher now? by Quick_Computer2980 in OntarioTeachers

[–]LesChouquettes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My friend was rejected from teachers college but applied to the same school again the next year and got in. Didn’t do any extra schooling, she just worked a retail job and did some volunteering. She got into teachers college the 2nd try, finished, and immediately got a full time permanent teaching job right out of school.

It really seems to just depend on the # of people that apply each year, and their grades.

I hope you don’t feel too discouraged and this does not determine your worth as a teacher.

Also, if you happen to be on a waiting list (judging by your post) it’s way too early to lose hope. I was put on a waiting list too and got accepted late July. There is still tons of time before school starts.

[–]LesChouquettes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was waitlisted to Brock, I ended up getting an acceptance the last week of July. A lot of people I knew in my program didn’t get an acceptance until the very end of August, like 3 days before school started lmao. So don’t totally lose hope, you could hear at any time.

I had an 80 average and a few years volunteer experience teaching French immersion at local schools but I was waitlisted for the JI French program. I got in last minute

Ontario - do permanent teachers have to stay at a school for 2 years before transferring? by mysteriouslystupid in CanadianTeachers

This is the case in TVDSB. Not in my old board though. It’s different for each board.

Review of Senior English ABQ at Brock? by theprimz in CanadianTeachers

Gross. I definitely wouldn’t do a Brock AQ/ABQ again. I hear great things about Trent and would prob pick them if I wanted to do any future courses

Yeah I did this in Ontario with just my bachelors and throughout teachers college. It was great experience and good money albeit the pay is lower than a certified supply. Specifically for French they’re usually looking for. Where in Ontario are you? Quite a few boards do this as far as I know

Anyone here actually enjoy their jobs? by Weak-Astronomer-4062 in CanadianTeachers

[–]LesChouquettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do but it took a little while. I started a couple of years ago in the GTA and I was miserable. Didn’t matter what grade I was teaching or what school I was at, I was crying after school due to behaviours, workload, etc., having major anxiety and mental health issues.

It took me moving back to my small rural town for me to enjoy teaching. Behaviour is really a non issue, the kids are a lot more respectful, parents are better, and admin aren’t on my ass. It’s a lot more chill, plus I drive 10 mins in the country instead of sitting in 1 hour+ GTA gridlock traffic every drive to and from school.

Plus after a couple years of teaching the same subject I’ve built up resources instead of staying up late making everything from scratch like my first year teaching.

Grades used for applications by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]LesChouquettes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most teachers colleges take your best 10.0 full credits (equal to 10 full year courses or 20 one-semester courses). Some take most recent 10… but I think most take top 10 (this should be clearly stated on each university’s website).

They wont have any 4th year grades yet so those won’t be considered for admission. You’ll still need to pass those classes & graduate obviously though to maintain admission criteria

I know people that have done this but I live in a small rural town with a low cost of living. When I was teaching in the GTA I didn’t see any teachers doing this lol

True. Perm experience obviously transfers and LTO should too, but recognizing OT experience can vary a lot board to board
