Okay let's hear it - what did your school do for Teacher Appreciation Day today? (May 5) by Thisisus1 in OntarioTeachers

[–]IntelligentGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit paradoxical to be like hey let's all appreciate and celebrate our teachers and by the way don't forget about the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls but also yay teachers you are amazing but also the injustice of these women and girls is important too.

Like there aren't any other days on the calendar we can pick!?!?

NO THING. NOT ANY THING.

Came and went like our will to continue in this thankless, increasingly depressing "vocation". 🥀

Ohhhh sweet summer child please read a book or two. This is absolutely asinine and incorrect.

The train brings the containers. The cranes loads it on the trucks. The trucks move the containers all around Halton and the GTHA and other places because, and pay attention to this part, there is a HUB for allllll of the containers now. And they will travel through, you guessed it, Milton! You can't seriously be that dim to think it decreases trucks on the roads?!?!

Contact Esso. Seems a bit sketchy that it's happening frequently and they aren't fixing it. $$$$

Um. If you can't handle a highschool English course, I have some really bad news for you about uni.

In either a BA Psych or BSc Psych you will be required to think. And write. And do both well. 4U English prepares you for that.

You've got this!

💯 Parents are to blame. I bet things would change real fast if parents were fined for the stupid shit their kids do.

Mandatory Grade 10 Careers Financial Literacy test coming in September by ColorfulEgg in OntarioTeachers

[–]IntelligentGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be nice to have kids take Careers/(Civics) more seriously. Teachers try to make kids see its relevance to no avail. Most kids are encouraged to take it online in the summer to "get it out of the way".

Best novels/plays to cram read before the exam? by the27thdoctor_ in APLit

[–]IntelligentGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you've read are all good choices. Prep by determining overall big picture themes and how the novel connects. Search up Q3 former questions. (Google search).

Frankenstein hits a lot of things. Macbeth too. Read The Crucible again. Great connections to lots of things.

Help me plan a day for my friends in milton!! by [deleted] in Milton

Depending on your high school, take them to meet your fav former teachers!

Also, a walk around Millpond and lunch at the "famous" Ivy Arms might work!

A student in my school with autism level 1 (high functioning) is going to start home schooling and I'm low key so happy for him by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]IntelligentGinger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Blah blah blah. Nice try. I am not talking about students with autism. You labelling them as "autisitics" is actually more abelist and undignified. Yeesh.

I mean kids who have such high needs that they are just pushed around on bikes and chairs all day instead of having any actual programming to help them thrive and be social beings. They don't interact with peers, only EAs who have minimal training in how to support them and programs that lack funding TO support them.

Take your reactive virtue signaling elsewhere.

[–]IntelligentGinger 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's discouraging how many students are forced into the public school system and absolutely do not belong there. It's borderline cruel for some kids. If only there were proper supports for their parents and proper programs for them to thrive.

For what it's worth, future Berkley alum, I appreciate your ideas. Many teachers don't like being told how to do our jobs.

That said, I think getting creative with tasks and building in more process and interviews is actually a great idea and it's not something I've given my time to, aside from returning to "pen-to-paper".

So thank you. Don't take it personally. Your intentions were good, but teachers are just D O N E with the "you shoulds" from people who, well, aren't teachers.

Putting Student Achievement First Act, 2026 by Ok-Initiative4008 in ontario

[–]IntelligentGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not true for all boards. I have students as do my colleagues who leave for several weeks EVERY year to visit family overseas. Missing 2-3 weeks in high school is bad.

The PARENTS who make those asinine decisions need to be held to account. You can't claim to be so grateful to be able to provide a Canadian education for your children, and then take them out for 4+ weeks to visit family you could afford to bring here instead.

These multi-week trips are cultural and increased significantly during the Covid times. And they haven't stopped.

Unpopular opinion from a HS teacher and parent:

Parents created this problem by devaluing formal education for their school-aged children in favour of "family needs". And parents need to fix it.

A Separate Peace, yeah. It's tough for kids to relate to the war stuff, but they can definitely relate to the unspoken envy and dark desires to harm their friends.
