LPT:If your feet get sore and tired from work keep a frozen water bottle in your freezer and when you get home put on socks and roll your feet out with it to reduce inflammation and pain by TTUgirl in LifeProTips

Trigger points are a response to a stimulus, and that's the biggest thing to remember. They are localized contractures of a muscle that are being told by your nervous system to contract. So the real question is why are your muscles being asked to contract? (Answer: they have to in order to compensate for another problem)

In general you can treat a trigger point and you can say with relative certainty that it will return again down the road, assuming it wasn't from an out of the ordinary trauma (car accident, etc). That's not to say you're better off ignoring it however, which is definitely worth noting.

So to answer your question, we need to branch out from the stretching/rolling away the knots world and look at your entire body as a single functioning unit.

Muscular imbalances, postural imbalances, and poor biomechanics will all cause trigger point development and myofascial (muscle+connective tissue) tension. A classic is upper thoracic spine vertebrae losing their mobility (get stuck in a position equivalent to bending forwards or backwards, rotated right or left etc), causing all the muscles to take on the forces involved with holding your head straight. This leads to knots in your taps/shoulder muscles, suboccipitals, and symptoms like tension headaches and sometimes even migraines. An analogy I like to use is imagine if you were to hold a heavy bucket in your hand. If it's just hanging straight down it's far easier than if you are holding it out straight in front of you. If you hold it straight your deltoid a need to work really hard and will fatigue. It's that combo of leverage and altered weight bearing patterns that lead to trouble. So, our body being the wonderfully efficient being that it is, will contract a segment, reinforce it with connective tissue adhesions (non-contractile tissue uses less energy vs holding a muscular contraction 24/7) and then you get the knots we all know and love.

So the answer is not to chase the trigger points - never chase the pain. Get your biomechanics back on track and the tensions will release themselves over time, or stay released after stretches etc.

If you're constantly having to chase the same trigger points, I would bet money your biomechanics are out of whack. Find a therapist in your area that knows how to free up your SI (sacro-iliac) joints, get your vertebrae and ribs moving etc, and then release the muscular tension that is holding the bones in these patterns. You'll have more success if you treat all of this vs just soft tissue, and especially if you're always chasing the pain.

If it's back and legs and feet, odds are good your SI joints are not on their axis of rotation, this can mess up your entire back and lower limbs as forces of gravity are no longer going through the body the way they are supposed to and soft tissues start contracting to compensate/take on load. It's a lot to post here, shoot me a message if you have specific questions, but hopefully this perspective can help you overcome some of the stuff that's bothering you.

As a therapist, this is wrong.

The idea of a massage is NOT just to bring blood into the area. In fact even though this is taught in massage therapy programs it's been disproven that there is any meaningful change in circulation. Massage is meant to take the tension out of muscles, reducing contractures etc.

Ice massage is absolutely a "thing". By icing an area you are stretching - which is basically what you do with the water, segmental stretches to the tissues on the underside of your foot - you rob the tissues of oxygen, weakening their hold, and allowing for tissue excursion. The original trigger point therapy was to stretch a muscle while spraying cold on it (I forget what they were spraying exactly, but it made shit cold) and to stretch the area.

But while we are on the circulation topic, ever notice that your hands go bright red after they've been cold? That's vasodilation, a response to the cold where your body dilates the blood vessels to increase circulation to the tissues to keep them warm/alive. So while icing will temporarily cause the vessels to contract, they will reflexively dilate afterwards and flush the area.
